Wow, what memories this brings back. I grew up in the L.A. area and first saw the Doors at the Whiskey in 1966. Obviously girls loved the Beatles and screamed their heads off seeing them live. But I saw girls at the Whiskey totally mesmerized by Jim Morrison. I always thought it was a shame that Ray, Robbie and John didn't get more recognition because they were an awesome band. When their first album came out in January of '67, my stoner friends and I could not get enough of their magical sound . . . there was nothing else like it at the time.

When you saw them at the Whiskey, were they the opening act for Love or were they already the headliners?

You got to react to the 1968 live version in Europe of this. It's mesmorizing to say the least 🙏🏻

Interesting to hear your interpretation of the lyrics. Knowing what is influencing the music just adds another layer.

That "Bassline" is Ray's left hand on the keyboard. No bass player.

The bass line is supplied by Ray Manzarek with the foot metal on his keyboard. They never had a bass guitarist.

Close...Ray used a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass he'd set up on top of his Vox/Gibson. Left Hand playing Bass, Right doing the Keys, doesn't get the the credit he deserves. The did use a bass player on the studio albums consistently after the 2nd album.

they've had a bass player on several songs: The Doors (1967) Robby Krieger: bass guitar on "Soul Kitchen" and "Back Door Man" Larry Knechtel: bass guitar on "Soul Kitchen", "Twentieth Century Fox", "Light My Fire", "I Looked at You" and "Take It as It Comes" Strange Days (1967) Doug Lubahn: bass guitar (except on "Unhappy Girl", "Horse Latitudes" and "When the Music's Over") Waiting For the Sun (1968) Douglas Lubahn: occasional bass, electric bass on "Spanish Caravan" Kerry Magness: bass guitar on "The Unknown Soldier" Leroy Vinnegar: acoustic bass on "Spanish Caravan" The Soft Parade (1969) Harvey Brooks: bass guitar on "Tell All the People", "Touch Me", "Shaman's Blues", "Do It", "Runnin' Blue" and "The Soft Parade" Doug Lubahn: bass guitar on "Easy Ride", "Wild Child" and "Wishful Sinful" Morrison Hotel (1970) Ray Neopolitan: bass guitar Lonnie Mack: bass guitar on "Roadhouse Blues" and "Maggie M'Gill" L.A. Woman (1971) Jerry Scheff: bass Other Voices (1971) Jack Conrad: bass guitar on "In the Eye of the Sun", "Variety Is the Spice of Life" and "Tightrope Ride" Jerry Scheff: bass on "Down On The Farm", "I'm Horny, I'm Stoned" and "Wandering Musician" Wolfgang Melz: bass on "Hang on to Your Life" Ray Neapolitan: bass on "Ships w/ Sails" Willie Ruff: acoustic bass on "Ships w/ Sails" Full Circle (1972) Leland Sklar: bass on "Hardwood Floor", "The Mosquito" and "It Slipped My Mind" Jack Conrad: bass on "4 Billion Souls", "Good Rockin", "The Piano Bird" and "The Peking King and the New York Queen" Charles Larkey: bass on "Verdilac" and "The Piano Bird" Chris Ethridge: bass on "Get Up and Dance"

It’s an invitation to open up spirituality and reflect on modern society’s inner turmoil. song opens spiritual doors that take listeners on a journey of self-reflection and helps them to contemplate the bigger picture. It reminds us that we can reexamine our own way of thinking and beliefs, breaking down prejudices and misconceptions. It shows us that there is always potential for growth and societal transformation. Also no bass line, keyboards ❤

THE WASP is anothrr great Doors song. They were the house band at Whisky a go-go. They got fired for the lyrics about parents from The End.

The Doors made their appearance during the height of the hippie era, the era of the "singer-songwriter," when the music largely had a peace and love groove. The Doors showed up and blew that all to kingdom come, with Morrison's raw and uninhibited vocals overlaying sounds from a dark and dangerous landscape. You guys seem to have had the same reaction that I had when I first heard "When the Music's Over": you were transported to a thrilling and scary place you'd never been to before. Thanks for keeping the flame burning.

LOL your guessing was ok re: "the scream of the butterfly" but was off a bit. "The scream" is a shamanic reference of transitioning of being.. Jim thought of himself as a Shaman, and was using terminology from Carlos Castaneda, a fellow Shaman. the more you know :)

Jim saw himself as a shaman. He along with the other members were mesmerizing on stage. When you saw The Doors perform, there were no sets with light shows, special effects, multiple designer outfit changes, or choreographed dancers; just pure unadulterated music. In reaction to the commentary at the end, during this time the music and the hippie movement represented the anti-establishment movement. We were encouraged to question everything. Even though I was an 8 year old, I started to question everything, which I do to this day. What we trusted, could very well be our enemy.
