The Peruvian Amazon is a dangerous place when you're small. So the young Inga tree hires ants as bodyguards to protect its vulnerable leaves. Their pay: delicious nectar served up in tiny ant-sized dishes. But will the ants keep up their end of the bargain?
SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! goo.gl/8NwXqt
DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
* NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! *
For some, ants are welcome guests. In the Amazon rainforest of Peru, a type of tree called the Inga actively encourages ants to stick around.
The tree, which is related to plants that produce beans and other legumes, grows tiny structures near the base of its leaves, called nectaries, that secrete a sugary fluid to feed to the ants. In turn, the ants serve as bodyguards, protecting the Inga and its nectaries from invading herbivores.
“Plants have all kinds of defenses, but because Inga leaves are not as toxic as many other plants,” says Suzanne Koptur, a professor of biology at Florida International University, “they’re good food for herbivores of all sizes and shapes, from big mammals like sloths and monkeys to little invertebrates like caterpillars.“
The rainforest is especially dangerous for young trees. The branches and leaves of mature trees merge together high in the air forming a canopy. Young trees on the forest floor struggle to get enough light. Young trees also have fewer leaves, and losing even a few to herbivores can threaten their survival.
They may be small, but few species want to tangle with the aggressive and territorial big-headed ants.
"Ants have powers in numbers, especially if they bite and sting," says Koptur.
The ants keep most herbivores, especially hungry caterpillars, away from the young trees. Simply put, the trees provide nectar to the ants in exchange for protection.
--- What is mutualism?
In biology, mutualism refers to a relationship between two organisms that benefits both of parties. Mutualism is one type of symbiotic relationship.
--- What are caterpillars?
Caterpillars are the larvae of butterflies and caterpillars. Young caterpillars hatch out of eggs, eat, grow and molt. They eventually pupate inside their cocoons and then emerge as winged adults.
--- What is plant nectar?
Nectar is a sugary liquid secreted by plants through structures called nectaries. Nectaries are commonly found in flowers to attract pollinators. Some plants also have extra-floral nectaries located outside of the flowers. To attract animals including ants and predatory wasps that protect the plant from herbivores.

I guess the ants just don't know that the plant would be a much more sustainable and efficient way of getting food. Instead, they just made the plant weaker, making them have to put extra effort to find another food source once the caterpillars move away.

Well thats because what you call "short term" still lasts a few generations for us. As humans we think a individuals, not as a species. Therefore as long as the deal outlast us, we have a hard time defining if what were doing is right or wrong because in the end, it doesnt change a thing for the individual
@mohammedrahman3718
@mohammedrahman3718 7 лет назад
Perhaps we ought to change how we think then. Maybe we could educate future generations to not only see themselves as individuals but as part of a global village? Similar to how all species of ants work for the common good of their colonies.

There really was no friendship to begin with. The ants were being bribed from the start. The tree was paying them for protection, and nothing more. The caterpillar came in with a better deal: instead of being paid food for defending, they get paid food for doing NOTHING. That's a way better method of getting food. Let's face it: the tree mixed up "loyalty" and "friendship" with business. Natural business. And in the business world, both in our human society and in nature, you NEVER mix up a business deal with friendship.

@coreydoyle4702
@coreydoyle4702 7 лет назад
You use words like "selfish", and "selves". Neither concept is being portrayed in this video, for these concepts cannot be applied to non-intelligence. The balance is arrived at through countless millennia of death, by the iterative tuning of biological mechanisms, and the formation of niche organisms.
@carboxysome2630
@carboxysome2630 7 лет назад
Corey Doyle Well of course I didn't mean it in the concept as if you'd be talking to another person.Just like Dawkings talks about genes as being "selfish",and yes,I agree-death plains a main role in shaping all living things through evolution,which is kind of ironic.
@coreydoyle4702
@coreydoyle4702 7 лет назад
Carboxysome Yep, life works it's own way, not how we would romanticize it. I find that one of it's most intriguing properties :-) I see what you mean about the "selfish gene", however this is not always the case. Many organisms will cooperate with others, sometimes even to their detriment.
@jasoncarto
@jasoncarto 7 лет назад
"selfish" is a human concept. There is no right or wrong in survival. Only life and death. "selfless" only works in procreation and group sustainability at the expense of the individual. Important lessens never taught in classrooms.

Jordan Dossou Nice troll. Almost had me taking you seriously for a second.
@Jordan_Dossou
@Jordan_Dossou 7 лет назад
Cortster whatever. Sarcasm isn't funny😑. If something evolves slowly over time, does that mean that certain parts of it are inactive and fully developed until an offspring is passed and it has one of those new, active parts? For example......when humans and apes diverged from the same ancestor, we slowly grew opposable thumbs. For the time period where we were evolving that extra attachment, was it just a lump on their hands that slowly grew over thousands of years........ or did a mutation happen all of a sudden in an offspring and they were just born with fully developed thumbs? Please answer the question. No smart comments😒

What kind of relationship is it between the ants and the caterpillar? It seems like it's giving up a long term good for a short term good and therefore probably not mutualism.
@MrCrashDavi
@MrCrashDavi 7 лет назад
Cooperation is when both participants benefit from the relationship, Mutualism is when both the participants need each other to survive (like cows and their cellulose digesting gut-bacteria or Lichen where the bacteria and fungi wouldn't be able to live on their own). At least that's how I learned it at school.

Right, but in this case, are the ants receiving a long term good or are they being tricked into doing something bad for them? If the latter, what is the term for that sort of interspecies relationship?
@slateflash
@slateflash 7 лет назад
Not sure if the ants benefit a lot from the caterpillar but the caterpillar absolutely depends on the ants for survival not so much because the ants defend it from predators but because without the ants to remove the sugar, it accumulates and will eventually clog up the caterpillar's pores with fungus

Deep Look I'm only subscribed to small amount of channels only like 40 ranging from Phillip D, h3, the good stuff, scishow, gradeA, iduz, otherwise in my opinion it post to much on ur feed. Luckily we have you guys that post such good content, the music, camera angles, Amy's voice & her writing, replying to ur subs & really the whole team that just delivers every time, thank you!! Idk how this channel doesn't have a million subscribers. If you guys have a patreon page or merch that i don't know about please let me know.
