@randallellison6421

That literally happened to a crew I was assisting at King, Arkansas a while back! They brought in a mixed freight (crews refer to them as "junk trains" on the Thayer Sub) that had a bad FRED on the rear. I picked up the conductor at the head end and brought him to the rear, so he could check the FRED and see if they could get it working again. Turned out the engineer couldn't hear his conductor over the radio, but he could hear me in the van. So the conductor would relay the info to me, and then I would relay the info to the engineer! Oh, and on top of that, after trying several times to try and get the FRED to work, we had to wait another hour and a half for the responder to show up with a new FRED!

They're called combos. When two trains are near each other and going the same place they're just joined and a van picks up the extra crew. The chief efficiency is track usage: two trains can travel in one block, not needing spacing. Safetywise there are half the number of level grade crossings. Downsides are they're longer than sidings so passing one can be a problem.

That train was 15,000’‼️ Maybe more? 2-3-2. 30mph, 6+minutes. @30mph 2 min/mile. 6 minutes=3 miles. BNSF is running a big time show of power and tonnage. Long trains like this are very safe because they are given clear track through. Steady at 30mph for 100’s of miles. We have many tracks through Cleveland, and 30mph and 15,000’ is far safer than 7,000’ and 60mph! Especially when rolling tank cars. There’s no hurry with dangerous liquids or coal. None. So long, steady and

Double coal! The fuel of coal-fired plants is kept in a coal pile on the site of the power plant. They measure the pile in terms of days of operation. I can see where one customer can request a double load especially if there is cold weather approaching :) These trains are awesome as they have plenty of power and are excellent to watch as they go by. Safety - I don't know. More cars and more engines means more things could go wrong I suppose. One thing for sure there will be a few vehicles upset by how long it takes for the train to clear the crossing :)

It's all about profits, not safety. The RRs don't care about safety, it's low on their list of priorities. The RR doesn't care about the communities they go through and by. All they care about is profit and having tax payers pay their retirement, medical insurance, and pay for fixing and upgrading the RRs. Tax payers have already paid for a project 10 years ago that hasn't been started yet to add a second rail from Kansas down to New Mexico to keep trains from parking across crossings and having to wait for a single line to open up.

@ralphaverill2001

Certanly more profitable, though I can't see how a long train is even as safe as a shorter one. Certainly people waiting at grade crossings would vote for shorter, not longer trains.
