2.5 hours?! Are you serious?? We do *not* deserve this but holy shit I am so glad we're getting it. Know you went through hell to produce this content for us all and I'm very appreciative. Super excited to watch this
I'm thankful I got to see Jay live in March at Melbourne Knotfest, I can rest easy knowing I got to see that legend live in the flesh- his precision, poise and creativity elevated The Knot more than anybody could ever hope to achieve. It's bittersweet, they booted both drummers who both ended up being generational talents for the same band- but I know Jay will be an upgrade for literally all bands he decides to play on with, he's still young in his music career and I have nothing but love for him, he got me started in drumming.
MATE - The absolute PEAK content from Craig just keeps rolling!! These guests are out of this world!!!! 🔥 Mario? Jay? We’re looking at you Lars and Thomas Haake 👀
Grew up with Conan O'Brien and always gravitated towards Max. It's incredible to see Jay carrying the torch in such an epic way. Jay has had enormous shoes to fill in so many ways. It's amazing to see how down to earth he is. Would be totally understandable if he had developed an ego to go with all the success.
Very cool podcast, I listened to the whole thing in the background while gaming.. I love Jay, he is one of my drumming inspirations, and he seems like a great guy as well. You love to see it
sad he is out of slipknot now, looking forward to seeing what he does next. that being said- you HAVE to have him back on some day to talk about what happened!
Love this interview so far (halfway through)! Jay is such a down to earth dude and I'm pumped that you were able to talk with him, Craig! Patreon RISE UP lol. So happy to get to listen to this early.
I think what really makes this podcast is that Craig has a lot of experience in the subjects he talks about with his guests. He's a musician, he's toured a lot, he runs a business, he knows a lot of people in the industry so he can ask very good questions which often lead down tangents but are still so very informative and entertaining. Compare that to other interviewer/podcasts who's main experience is being a journalist you end up with questions like "who are your top 5 dictators" 😂
@@reynlord666 you are very welcome Craig. I've been following you for a while now. You've been very honest and informative about a lot of things, music and personal wise which is very refreshing from the usual social media veneer you get
What an absolute treat this pod was. A eye opening episode bro, I mean I knew he was a freak of music nature but fuck this pod uplifts him into an how new realm. What a guy, thanks Craig ❤
I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't like Slipknot (I know, I know), but this was a great episode. Jay seems like a cool dude. I don't know 300+ of any songs, and I couldn't imagine trying to learn that at 17. My ass would have had an anxiety attack just from trying to process playing for Bruce. Hell even for Slipknot! Toss in no click track, the riser, the heat, the costume. Fuuuuuck me. Leading up to this, I saw a few comments complaining about nepotism. That might have opened the door for him, but nepotism didn't learn that insane set list. Nepotism didn't land his current gig. Jay's hardwork and dedication did. People just love to hate. Especially in the metal world. Crack episode. The set looks great! Really does have a movie vibe going on. Can't wait to be drip fed the rest of the Nashville run.
I don’t think it’s that uncommon to not like Slipknot these days… they have not been releasing good stuff for a minute. To many only first 2 records are considered good. For me it’s the first 3… after I have not been able to get into majority of their stuff. All in all it’s a matter of preference
Great episode!! Jay really seems like a great person on top of being an amazing drummer. Side note: visuals and audio are great!! Especially knowing all that shit that went down behind the scenes!
All the stress of the Nashville situation was worth it from an audience perspective because this episode was very very good. Jay was fantastic in this. Looking forward to more Nash episodes.
SO SICK CRAIG NO WAY! I just got into your channel recently with the Mario interview, then yesterday saw the Ali Richardson interview, because I fucking love that dude and realized - dude I fucking love you too! Found out about Stray from the Path, and it's fucking heavy. In the heart-hitting heavy. Loved the interview with Ali, just wanted to come back to listen to the last 20mins of that interview to then see - Jay motherfucking Weinberg in my feed. On your podcast!! Craig, I'm so fucking stoked to have found out about your stuff. Much love from Switzerland, dude! Cheers and thanks for doing this.
Bro this was such a class episode. I’m 2hrs 13min in right now and it’s the first time I’ve checked to see how long was left, and only because I thought “how long have I been watching this”. Such an awesome conversation, and I reckon you’re deffo mates now 👍🏼
This is the best drum related interview I've seen yet and don't worry it doesn't all have to be about drums what makes us love musicians isn't just the music it's the feeling, the art and the creativity behind the player
This is sooo interesting 😵I have the feeling I have known Jay for a long time, this is the first time I see a podcast or interview with him... It's weird, it was like hearing a friend talk about stuff after years of not seeing each other 🤣 Thank you, for the episode! 🫡
Whatever I find jay either a podcast like this or the house of mask or anything he is always such a cool guy. really patient and down-to-earth. We had a lot more like him in the industry
Very nice interview! very chilled, cool topics, and great audio and video! I had to wait until I had a less busy day to watch it, as it’s 2.5h, the length totally works for the interview. Now, 2h in knowing Craig was drinking this algae stuff every day out in a Nashville, plus went out every day, I can’t help what his gut is feeling right there. Interview was awesome.
The 1st time catching your pod. With JayW. What a hang! I could have went another 2hrs. The shop talk was great. It was all the extra stories that makes this one a treasure. Thanks 🤘
this episode was great. really cool to hear about Jay's experiences with musical heroes, drumming for gigantic artists, and the bit on Magick and "coincidental" stuff.
Loved this episode mate! Keep em coming. I love that you're meeting your drumming heroes in such a candid way. Can't wait to see what your upcoming guests will be. Cheets!
love hearing jay talk he always seems super chill, love watching his visits to the house of masks with aj , ive been playing guitar for 16 years and started learning drums this year love this podcast as always rad to just hear guys shoot the shit
I can’t help but have the biggest smile on my face when I see a Downbeat episode that’s longer than 1.5 hrs. Such a special treat that makes my miserable work day so much better!
I love the moment when you are going through some inner turmoil about potentially getting a friend fired, and he just says "yeah! love having justin in my corner :) " LMFAO
This was so fucking dope - so so so great to see JAY MOTHERFUCKING WEINBERG on the pod. If I could make a couple of friendly suggestions - take 'em or leave 'em obviously - (1) it'd be cool if you could do some rapidfire fan Qs, say if you did an insta poll before your interviews with these guys and (2) throughout your conversations, if you make reference to things like a big show or Jay's gnarly blister (mentioned around 53:10), it'd be sick if you could get a photo and add it on-screen in post. Love what you do though brother and I'm loving watching the rise of The Downbeat. You're in a good spot man - sick insider perspective and insights into the life of a pro drummer. Much love from Melbourne, Australia 🤘🏼
I think the first suggestion *could* work in theory, however to play devil's advocate - I'd say it would potentially disrupt the flow of the established formula for the Downbeat Podcast. I.e - Craig does a fuck ton of research on the person, preps a load of questions but lets the guest speak (as well as using his great interviewer/people skills and already built rapport to have a proper conversation). I think adding a specific section like a quick fire q and a wouldnt really fit the feel of the pod. However, he could maybe do an insta suggestions thing before he records each ep, and then if he thinks any of them are worth asking he can just add them to his list, to ask if it works in context of the conversation
With the second suggestion - I'd hazard a guess that probably most people either listen on audio platforms or listen to the vid in the background, so it might not be worth the effort to take the time to do this for a pod on top of the editing they already do. That being said, I know a few pods have clips channels on RU-vid that upload 10 minute clips of interesting stories etc from an episode (mainly to draw in new fans) with slightly more evocative titles, e.g. "Jay Weinberg REVEALS blister troubles with slipknot"😂. I would 100% support this being a thing if they could get an editor with the time to make clips, and they could definitely edit pictures etc into those!
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. I actually trial fan Qs in the patreon and although well meaning, a lot of them end up as standard press questions that all musicians hate 😂. Sometimes they make it in! Simon the editor often adds pics in but they are at his discretion! I’m always up for more but maybe if theres an in-person producer one day it would be easier
Any time man. Genuinely feel like this was a huge level up moment for the pod - so stoked for you. Another friendly comment, Jay sort of apologises for straying 'off-topic' when he deviates from talking about the snare drums - to be honest, I reckon the tangent about magic and beliefs and these drummers' views on things outside drumming are just as interesting as their favourite kit or location or whatever. Just some friendly suggestions from a fan. Keep doing your thing man you're crushing it@@reynlord666
I wasn't familiar with neurosis or that song so I just looked up that breakdown. I listened to it side by side with you guys singing it here and you nailed it hahah
So I watched this yesterday and made a mental note to check out Nightshift after the manifestation/unexplainable coincidences talk you guys had. Went into work today and it was on the playlist they played. Crazy.
clearly I haven't been following Slipknot that closely cuz at the start of the interview I was like, "is he possibly related to Max Weinberg, the sick drummer for Bruce Springsteen?" and soon after you confirmed it! as a huge Bruce Springsteen fan it was cool to hear about his time touring with them and how they play. the way he feels about Fiona Apple is how i feel about Sara Bareilles. that's so cool to hear.
I’m not a drummer and not really a Slipknot fan but I’ve been following Jay on yt and enjoy his videos. I wonder what his thoughts are on El Estepario Siberiano’s covers of Slipknot tunes? Lol On the conversation of snares. Played with a drummer that used a piccolo snare tuned as tight as possible minus half a turn. It was pretty ear piercing. Great discussion. Thank you Jay and Craig. I appreciate you both.
Holy shit! Did you jinx Jay and get him fired, too?!?! I’m sorry. Lol. I’m only kidding. I love this podcast. I appreciate what you bring us immensely. Have you reached out to Jay? Did you give us your update and I missed it? So very interested and invested after this episode.
