I'm so glad someone mentioned the weapon customization. Personally, I always felt like adding camos and attachments made the guns too personal, which conflicts with the desolate atmosphere that Zombies once had. When you used to find a gun, it was just a gun; it wasn't something that you meticulously adjusted before the game even started.

Although I loved this stuff when I was a teenager, I sort of gradually dipped from this whole scene of video games as the transition you've perfectly described occurred. This video is the first time I've seen Zombies footage from the newer Call of Duty games and it looks honestly entirely unrecognisable to me. The colour grading, the tone, the insane amount of HUD indicators. I'm honestly blown away how the people behind this mode have taken it in a direction THIS far away from what made it so loved in the first place. After Black Ops 3 I kinda stopped caring about the game mode. For me Zombies stopped being fun once the easter eggs stopped actually being easter eggs and just started being basically a requirement. Like you said it basically became a "Story mode" instead of just a horde/round survival gamemode with some easter eggs you could do on the side to get stronger if you really wanted to.

thats what ruined it for me. i liked zombies simple arcade mode especially since i like arcade style games. then they ruined it by making you do the story just to get a perk or pack a punch. they even removed things like reparing barricades and mines and instead of focusing on having different ways to survive a map you had to do the same tactic on each map to survive because they wanted you to do it that way to complete the story. tho black ops 1 onward did annoy me by adding things like crawling zombies and boss zombies. hated them and made the game pace awkward and hard to kill hordes of zombies when crawlers are so low down and cause gas damage that make killing regular zombies less fun because you have to deal with an annoying distraction.

people naturally get bored and tired of doing the same thing over and over. Zombies was fun in the beginning but also quickly became unfun when it was just the same over and over again. There kept coming more of them and they kept having longer lives. Eventually it would become game over question was just when. It felt like a really pointless and boring game when the concept had been done a couple of times.
@Jay-gf8tm

@@sebastianwallin3726 not really. The goal was to survive for as many rounds as possible. I played WAW Der Reise over and over. Getting to round 40 was an accomplishment on that map, you had to have skill. There would be consequences for falling early in the game that could hinder your longevity later on. You had to have strategy. Now I regularly make it to round 100 and blasting zombies isn't nearly as fun as playing defensively, nor is it rewarding. What’s really sad is that BO3 custom map makers are doing a better job at story telling and making up new stories. Along with crazy maps that add so much more gameplay and intricate details that add to the play value. Honestly, the maps I’ve played are better than anything Treyarch has done since BO3. @swordierre9341
@swordierre9341 2 года назад
You could train in every game, but after bo2 is when the maps and gameplay started being designed with training in mind. Theyd intentionally have very wide open areas in maps that are seldom seen in bo1 and 2. And the defensive playstyle was heavily discouraged due to faster more reactive zombies.

Another old timer chiming in, WAW zombies were great because of scarcity, praying a max ammo dropped on the high rounds. Falling had consequences that could hinder your longevity, you needed serious skill to get to round 50. They removed all strategy and skill that separated a truly good player from an average one. Now I regularly cruise to round 100 and have zero difficulty getting through the round, it's just time consuming. Getting to a high round is like a participation trophy instead of a badge of honor.

The multiverse while cool kinda took away the fun, dark and eerie while confusing everyone as you said. Bo4s Chaos definitely tried to go back to its roots but because of the time it divided fans further thus causing a abrupt end to the story. I had many ups and downs with Zombies. I liked It as a side activity in relation to Multiplayer between WAW and BO1. Then BO2 came and I HATED the first three maps. I hated not playing with the OG/Primis/Ultimis characters, hated the gameplay and hated even the way maps looked. But when I was almost leaving It altogether, Mob of the Dead and Origins came and completly turned my world upside down. From that point moving forward I almost left MP entirely and focused only in Zombies, to a point that till this day those two maps are in my top 5. Moving forward, let's say that BO3 was the greates "nerdgasm" I had in my life. I don't have anything bad to say about that game (ncluding MP, which Is the one I most played), It's the definition of perfection. Adding Zombies Chronicles to the mix and I can easily say that BO3 is THE DEFINITIVE ZOMBIES EXPERIENCE. But then Black Ops 4 came and break everything. I hate that game and It's Zombies more than I hate Activision for raping this franchise. It makes Tranzit feel like a masterpiece in comparison. It's "The Last Jedi - Call of Duty Edition". And unfortunatelly since then we had anything good. Cold War is fine, but It isn't true zombies. They tried to make It feel more like Extinction (a mode that I also loved and was basically retconed at this point), which sounds good in paper, but ultimatelly doesn't catch me like the OG experience. And Vanguard... Well, that Zombies is as dead as the rest of the game. I hope they reboot the whole thing and make It feel right again. With Activison-Blizzard being bought by Microsoft, and COD getting a longer development cycle, I hope we can get something better.

Glad to see I’m not the only person who dislikes what Primis, Apothicons, Origins and Easter Eggs did to zombies. Every setting has the “ooohhh ancient race did the thing” bullshit and it’s getting irritating. It was way cooler when the setting was based on disturbing nazi science, conspiracy and the hubris of man trying to tame death. Hell fun little fact if you don’t know, the Teleporters in Kino and Der Riese are based on the alleged Die Glocke project. A project that, if the stories are to be believed, was focused on developing time travel as a superweapon. Some even got so far as to say that the project succeeded due to the untraceable disappearance of various high ranking personnel and the supposed appearance of a bell like object being recovered by the US in the 1960s somewhere in Pennsylvania. Which creates a funny coincidence as the Ultimis crew leave Der Riese in 45’ and reappear sometime in the 60s, albeit in a different location. Wether you believe it or not, you have to see that these connections make for a far more intriguing story than “ancient evil space squids”. Also the vryillia (however you spell it) is a way better name than the keepers. Also something important to the gameplay loop, at least in my mind, is that the tools you needed to experience all the map had to offer were either in the box or in the perk machines. You didn’t need to go out of your way to look up guides and do a tedious list of tasks to get the map’s wonder weapons.

I fell out of zombies at around BO2 when the story started getting super convoluted and weird. Part of what I loved about the WaW-BO1-era of zombies was that the story tied in with real life events throughout history. Stuff like Wonder Weapons, Die Glocke, Tunguska, the Vril Society, etc etc were all based on real things. That's not to say something Die Glocke is real, but I mean it was based on several grains of truth. Zombies, and Call of Duty as a whole pre-2012, is what got me so interested in history and I just think its a shame that they opted to go for the weird (and honestly worn out imo) Lovecraftian stuff. I loved delving into all the mysteries and conspiracy theories that the story was based on, but you can't really do that anymore. I remember all the good days when zombies was just something you can jump into, no customization and no nothing, only bringing your own skills and wits to survive. Ever since BO3 onwards, you have all these complicated custom options and borderline cheats (such as the gobblegum thingie that gives you literally all the perks for nearly nothing in BO3) that made it lose its touch. I'm not going to judge the later zombies modes saying if they are still good or bad (anything after BO3) because I havent played anything past it, but from everything i've seen, its just changed so much now, Xperia did an amazing job of explaining it. I was reluctant to click on this video because of the overwhelming nostalgia that cod zombies holds over me. in 2nd grade I met two guys who were talking about black ops 1, and they would later become my 2 best friends all the way through 8th grade (freshman in college and still talk to them a handful of times a year) and we spent over 3 years from 2010-2013 having dozens upon dozens of sleepovers playing zombies splitscreen late into the night. From bo1 to waw, and later bo2. Everything just clicked and we loved it. What good me into cod zombies was the insanely addictive couch co-op, the scary atmosphere & story, and the fun arcade-y feel to it. The maps were classic and unique, the story was simple and not some dumb ass magic fantasy thing. It was 4 great characters exploring these dark nazi zombie areas with this indescribable atmosphere. Anyone who played cod from 2007-2012 knows what I mean. Everything was slower paced and worked. It wasnt like this fast paced turbo shit we have today in fps'. What lost me after black ops 2 was the convoluted story, characters and maps that didnt feel authentic, and just didnt feel like my cod zombies. WAW/Bo1 with the og 4 were the best with bo2 still being pretty good. But at the end of bo2 and beyond I just couldnt do it anymore. I think bo2 was the last good zombies game, and last good cod in general. I really do miss it, I miss inviting my 2 buddies over and staying up until 1am until my mom had to tell us to go to bed playing cod zombies with each other. I miss being so intrigued by the story and having my friends tell me about it. I miss when call of duty was like this. Innovative and fun, truly the best childhood games anyone could ask for. Unfortunately like with everything else, it just fell apart. I miss those years, they were better days. Just have to move on, cherish those memories, and hope that we'll get another good cod and zombies mode one day. A man can hope.

For me the cod zombies downfall has two major elements: 1) Oversaturation of the mode (2014 to 2019 Cods had a zombies mode) 2) The mode instead of being a side mode to have fun started to feel like a chore, more precisely for me around mid Bo3 era when the maps started to get overwhelming and basic thing like turning the power on needed very complex steps that for casuals required guides (and I really liked the first three maps in BO3 but the Stalingrad one was the declining for me)

I've actually recently got back into zombies (Black Ops - Black Ops 3, at least) and I played every map in order up until the final DLC for BO3 and, until watching this very well-made video, sort of had a feeling I couldn't put my finger on that I really started to notice while doing Black Ops 2, specifically Origins and Mob of the Dead. Personally, Mob is my favourite map of all time (if not Moon, but Moon is a very hated map and I understand) and it really does feel like a classic map combined with a lot of what BO3 would become... But the story of the map is very intertwined with the gameplay which in some ways does take away from the whole mystery of the map; this said, I feel Mob balanced story with gameplay near perfectly. 17:20 It's Origins where the "easter egg" is basically THE OBJECTIVE OF THE MAP and you have Samantha literally getting pissed at you for not doing steps of the easter egg. Even the "easter egg radios" have a "press _ to play radio" prompt as the story is so in your face on that map. While Origins is an outstanding map (like, the staves are iconic), I could never get my mates to play it with me back in the day and even now getting back into zombies with the boys, everyone just wants to play Kino, Der Riese, Tranzit, Town, or Ascension just due to how simple and casual those maps are. Seeing how every map beyond Origins took notes from Origins, that means I can't play and BO3 maps with the boys... and quite frankly, most days I don't wanna have to invest 2 hours into "setting up" and building wonder weapons. I guess zombies just got too complicated while also becoming less complicated, if that makes sense.

I can absolutely point to the specific element that triggered the downfall: the hacker device from the map Moon. You were forced to use it to stop the excavators or else an entire half of the map would become inaccessible; if you happened to be on the side without the teleporter to Area 51 or the hacker spawn, you basically lost the game. Additionally, it was very difficult to use the device solo since you sacrificed your space suit and shooting capabilities, so you had to bring the chaotic gameplay to a screeching halt in order to usher the other players into one room or another like a mother duck. In game design terms, we would call that a parasitic mechanic; it was only there to serve itself, not to make the shooting more fun or intuitive. It set a precedent for every following map.

Funnily enough even though I agree, the hacker device was what made our friend group actually want to play Moon. As a day one zombies player who’s been playing since ‘08 world at war days, I knew there was something special to this mode. I remained a die hard fan till around the midpoint of the BO2 days, I’d say buried was the last map I was truly hyped for. My gradual lack of interest toward the mode was due to alot of things as my interests were changing at the time and I just wasn’t invested in video games as much as I once was. Along with that, I could feel zombies losing its authenticity that made me fall in love with it in the first place. To me it just lost that certain ambiguity or edginess that had me hooked for all those years. Aside from what the franchise has turned into, I’m happy we got what we did with those early maps. I think the biggest hit to the gamemode was the elimination of the challenging game progression. Back in the day as you said it was all up to the player to both progress through the game and uncover the easter eggs, theories, and slight story. The gamemode nowadays has not only lost its soul but also has forsaken and completely forgot about that challenging in-game progression and hidden story that the game was so renound for. It guides the player at every turn, tells the player what to do, and eliminates the original purpose of the game: that is survive. It forces the player to commit to these quests unlike how the older games made it the player's choice. Let's say for example if Skyrim gave you a fully fledged out skill tree/map, every shout and magical ability/spell, a fck ton of weapons, scrolls and armor, and 50 of each potion and tincture in the game at the start and forced the player to fight Alduin or Miraak straight away. Or in another example let's just say Minecraft forced players to go and kill the Ender Dragon or Wither rather than make it a choice, and that it guided the player deliberately through the entire process instead of making the player figure out said process by their own means. Or if they like Skyrim were given everything necessary to fight the Enderdragon or Wither right at the start and subsequently everything you need to get to them or summon them all at the start of the game. When a game guides the player through gameplay the entire time too much or gives the player everything they would possibly need in the beginning it eliminates the players experience by invalidating the challenges and journey the player must face within the game to get to the end and thus it eliminates rhyme and reason in playing the game. It eliminates the fun of playing it at all. That's what the later gamemodes of COD Zombies do.

I never really got into CoD zombies, the story up until the black ops3 was a extremely cool thing I was more interested in than the mode itself. After a while I got bored of just never having an objective beyond just seeing how long I could survive. Everyone I knew and played with was more interested in bragging about what level they got to and I was done. I still don't know what the heck the story of zombies is and unfortunately, I don't care anymore. As you say the feeling of helplessness is gone, and whilst I found the no chance of victory dumb, I'd rather have an actual objective to complete, the game mode itself was lost. Then I fell out with CoD with the super fast and aggressive gameplay. It was already there with people nearly always picking smgs and the one hit kill guns, but you could still beat these guys, but it felt like this aggressive and fast gameplay was *the* way to play. I think Extinction in CoD ghosts was the only mode that I really enjoy. Whilst to some it's a bad zombie clone, it's still a good different game. There's an objective so you have to attack, and defend against the horde, weapons and attachments are scattered around the map and varied so you might not get the same attachment. you'd get told the story, to the point of what a commanding officer would tell a team and the rest you uncovered. And you had a potential to beat the mode and win. Which to me felt more satisfying than zombies. But would I ever go back to zombies? No. The damage is done, even if they returned to form, I've lost so much interest in zombie games unless it's Resident Evil or State of Decay.

I've always heard and seen snippets of how many think that Zombies did end up degrading as time has gone on, but I think this is probably one of the first I've seen in more recent memory that's definitely understandable. I suppose I as a player should be kinda thankful I only played World at War (still my favorite) and Black Ops 1/2. 'Previously used to be more interested in the secrets and story/lore way back in my 360 days, but since Black Ops 2 I've never really had much of a drive to look into them that much, just play. The more... fantastical reimagining just felt odd to me and transitioning over to PC made me stop playing COD as a whole almost entirely as well. I always loved a lot of the easter eggs, *especially* the music ones from WAW and BO1. BO2 had some that were good, but usually too complicated either due to map size or layout that prevented me from getting them enough to really start liking them. The gameplay though... The gameplay has almost entirely been why I have never gone past BO2 (ignoring Advanced Warfare, but we don't talk about that;) I just don't like the more... arcade-y aspects of the games beyond that point enough to be interested in even a mode I still like a lot to this day as well. You put it so much more eloquent and in so much more detail than I possibly could in a youtube comment, but personally i think it was very clear where the series started going downhill, that is after moon and starting with tranzit, moon was the greatest but also last GREAT map in my opinion, in that it was the upper limit of complexity where adding more starts getting ridiculous and making it less fun instead of more. Same goes for the easter egg, It was difficult but doable and the reward was worth it. However they kept moving in that direction, adding more and more features and more and more complexity to the point where the most basic things like turning on the power and getting the pack a punch are so convoluted that it’s like doing an easter egg themselves and requires a full coordinated team (which can easily take upwards of 20-30 minutes of surfing lobbies before you get 4 people with mics, that are talking and all have a decent enough connection) and forget about most of the easter eggs past that point. Don’t get me wrong I had a lot of fun with black ops 2 (except tranzit that was plain terrible and the prime example of everything they got wrong) but the problems started adding up culminating in black ops 3 where as you said all the features demolished the challenge and progression of starting up a new game and building yourself up from nothing, it’s like with every other part of call of duty they said “we’ve got a great formula let’s stick to it” but made zombies with the complete opposite philosophy

Man, I freaking COOKED my first xbox 360 keeping it running for 12+ hours just running around in circles shooting at zombies that seemed to take absolutely no damage. I really miss those days.

Gobblegums are a mixed bag for me. They absolutely were a skip button that you could pay for and halted the progression of the game, but I also feel that they added a lot of replay value to the game based on the combos you used and added a lot of fun to the game

Honestly, like, I have been playing Zombies for 10 years now. From the days of going to the net cafe after school with friends to play Nacht and Der Riese to playing "FIve" on PS3 and trying my hardest to do the Origins easter egg. I have gotten more than enough of the basic zombie gameplay loop "5 shots in the body, knife, buy door, buy wall gun/try luck in box, collect points for jug, collect points for other perks, collect points for pap, survive until I get bored or die". The gubblegums, weapon kits and progression system re-ignited my desire to play the game again. They open up an entire new dimension of zombie experiences and for that I appreciate their addition. Microtransactions are gross but the fact that I do not wish to pay money for gums creates an entire new management dimension in my zombie experience, trying to make sure I don't overuse gubblegums and store them for special occasions. One can do the same routine on Der Riese for so long before it gets old honestly.

Thank you so much for making this video. I made a channel around 5 years ago to articulate your exact sentiment but this video did that way better than I could. In a nutshell, zombies understandably became more like CoD, with actioney solo aspects when it should have clung to it's horror based coop focused horde mode riots. I'm envisioning portal 2/RE7 style deadly puzzles for coop play, new coop features like reloading belt magazines of comrades, etc. What kinda annoys me in particular is how much content we're locked out of by not using RU-vid in the newer games. WaW-early bo1, you miss out on some music and lore. Any later, and half the dev time was put into fun weapons and boss fights that only 5% of people will experience.

One thing I think you forgot to mention was the strategy part of the gameplay. One of the best parts of zombies was the strategies you came up with with ur friends or even solo. I think the devs had good intentions of evolving the gameplay but sadly missed the mark. Maps like the bo1 snow map with bosses that prevented camping unfortunately took away the element of strategy. In theory the invincible/following boss did solve the camping problem….but it also stripped zombies of something special. A better way to fix the camping problem would be to have a game function where the ground around you erodes over time so you have to pick which places to camp in and what order. Do you camp in the catwalk for 15 rounds and then move to the basement level spot? Or do you stay at the catwalk for 5 rounds, and come back later when you know it will be better in the long run? Maybe mix it up for maximum benefit. The possibilities are endless. This would bring back strategy and make it something new and fun while also fixing a boring repeatable/everyone’s a winner camping problem. Sure eventually someone would find the ultimate strategy, but still. It would be so much fun!

I really liked it when it was less explained. when the Nazi's found strange powers, foolishly meddled with it and endangered the world. When we felt like we were dealing with power far beyond our control. We weren't afraid of some otherworldly evil, but rather what terrible people could do with new powers.
@1krani
@1krani 2 года назад
Sort of. The evil was otherworldly, but besides the MPD and the Vril device (even Shangri-La was constructed by modern people), we never saw it directly. That and the ghosts in Buried, but those seemed like they were disconnected from Element 115.

I had always wondered what specifically pushed me away from the zombies, and I think what you said perfectly explains why. I used to be so invested with the storyline in particular, and when they started Origins I became very confused with the multiverse (tho Origins is one of my favorite maps of all time). The hidden story throughout WaW - Bo2 Buried had me excitedly waiting for the next map.

This video really made me think about why I love games, and why the games I love work. I think its a case of "easy to learn, but hard to master". Take elden ring for example. The only things you start out with are move, hit and dodge. Then as you play the game, you get more complex abilities with better weapons, power stancing and ashes. The game was easy to learn as i only needed those 3 basic move, hit and dodge, but became more complex and as such felt I was learning and mastering the game more. Like you said in the video, the player starts out simple, you get a basic pistol and can move around. Fundamentally, this is all you really need to play the game, but as it goes on you get better guns and perks and areas. It feels as though you learn to master the game as you get better abilities and it becomes more complex, the key being "becomes more complex". So many games try to start you out with every option right out the gate. Heres your main weapon and your side and here are the perks they all have and what they all do along with the enemies who are weak to these things and heres where they appear and what level they are and here are the abilities youll be gaining and your story and characters youll need to know and the crafting system and mater- STOP!! it starts out as complex and as such, has nowhere to go to make the player feel as though they are becoming more powerful, just that they are playing correctly now. it becomes hard to learn, and easy to master. I want to feel as though im struggling to outpace the enemy, and once I do, I should feel as though I'm in a constant race to stay ahead of them, not that I've hit an arbitrary power and can start this part now. Elden ring does falter in this area in constantly trying to make the player feel underpowered in every new area, so I feel as though dark souls is a better example as after Anor Londo, the player feels as though they have outpaced the enemies, but must always stay on their toes in order to keep ahead of them lest they fall back into being underpowered. I also feel as though this is what happened to zombies like you said. The player started out weak, matched and outpaces the horde, and struggles to stay ahead. Now, here are all your perks and options right out the gate(which ultimatly also may overwhelm new players who miss the basic fun horde mode), and so all thats left is stay ahead of the horde, and every game is ultimately the same , and the gameplay loop becomes an arc

I can't stand modern zombies. I think it started going downhill after Black Ops 1. The story, the gameplay, and even a lot of the maps were just dumb and over the top. You went from this interesting, mysterious, yet subtle story of this futuristic technology like teleporters and even time travel becoming more and more likely but with consequences...To magic, dragons, time travel like its a Sunday morning drive, multiverses, 1000-foot tall robots, ghosts and plenty more. The gameplay went from a somewhat stressful and creepy atmospheric thriller survival shooter to just a straight-up arcade game, flashy lights everywhere, over the top magical weapons, survival was gone especially when you can start with a class like its Online and gobble gum giving you hundreds of perks, no longer a game where you're thrown in the thick of it with only a sidearm and having to use whatever guns you can find to survive, now just some crazy wacky fantasy shooter without even trying to add any atmosphere or aaaany sense of realism. I don't even know the story now as it's all just a twisted mess of "What other stuff do we see in magical games?"
@stelpher
@stelpher 2 года назад
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. World at War had the strongest core experience - creepy and tense, but fun and with all these interesting secrets/lore that you usually heard by word-of-mouth on a mate's couch. Very strong in that conspiracy theory and 'Nazi wunderwaffen' aesthetic. Black Ops brought us Kino and Five, which continued the general aesthetic but brought us even more secrets and lore. Then the BO1 DLC maps came out, each getting crazier than the last but all in a very good way (if a little less focused on the horror elements). The last DLC took place on the bloody moon, and it worked! That niche combination of the Zombies game mode's aesthetic with that unnerving fear of the unknown from retro lunar space travel. Brilliant. Of course there's a lot of nostalgia mixed in there, but those first two Zombies games were truly an unforgettable experience. And then BO2 came out, and the wackiness started getting a little out of hand. Off-beat from the prior two games. And then every game with Zombies after that just felt less like the experience we signed up for. It's a shame what happened to the series, but it still lives fondly in my memories. ...And I can't talk about CoD without mentioning World at War, Black Ops 1, Modern Warfare 1 and 2 will forever be the best CoD games. Fight me.

I disagree. The Precursors are even more creepy, mysterious, and cool than the Forerunners. Im sure the map has good mechanics and might even be fun to play, but i hate its artistic direction, i hate the fact that you get super OP wonder weapons just for the "power fantasy" and how its super easter egg based. Every map after origins went it its direction, and I've yet to be exited for anything zombies.
