Studios have forgotten the formula for luring audiences in. It's all about the clever story. When they use fairy tails written by talented people they succeed, but when they use chat GPT and lazy writers that's what we get.

Absolutely agree, and I think this again boils down to cutting on cost and time, from what I've observed some people are just kinda reluctant to pay for good writers/artists etc., they just kinda want a quick gratification and the magic to happen just so

@@duskytalkz Yes and we the viewers are suffering most from these choices. The lion king is what led me to do animation in life and to publish my own comic books. And again aaaabsolutely agree, the media we consume has the ability to have a profound impact on us (especially in our childhood when we perceive the world even more intensely than as adults), that is why I think it's important to keep bringing light to the issue and "make a noise" about it because it's not insignificant at all.

Even though there are things I like about a lot of the movies/series you criticized, you've definitely made a good point about the overall attitude and culture of artists/studios impacting their art in a negative way. So often people talk about "progress" in our modern world but this "progress" is often superficial and comes at a heavy cost to our own mental wellbeing and attitude toward the world, and naturally that bleeds into our art. And even I'll admit many of the recent movies I've liked feel somewhat disjointed and definitely could have used more time and care. I love Marvel movies/series and Star Wars but recently the sheer quantity of them has overwhelmed me and I don't keep up with them like I used to. It's just too much, too fast, too half-baked.

you cannot convince people by belittling them. and you cannot create good art when you are disconnected from who you are making it for. ironically, your argument is so kindly and emphatically put, that I am convinced of both. This was so beautiful. I actually remember the story of The Nightingale, I haven't heard that story since 3rd grade and I thought it was beautiful but I had forgotten the name of the stroy and never fully understood it's meaning until now. It is truly a true testament to true art. And I never realized Hans Christan Anderson wrote it.

I'm really happy I managed to put a name to a story from your childhood, I love when people rediscover memories like that ^-^ I actually skipped a part of the story that is a pretty good social commentary on the way different classes of people are in touch or not in touch with reality, it just wasn't relevant to what I'm discussing but it is a lovely layer to the story so I definitely recommend re-reading the full tale if you have the time, it's an artistic gem.

Great video! I’ve been a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki and his movies. I have never seen this movie but I’ve seen several Studio Ghibli movies and personally I think the reason he keeps coming back to make movies is because he’s trying to keep the true spirit of art alive. Anime is literally what’s keeping handdrawn animation alive because of how greedy and corrupt the animation industry has become. I’ve seen several shows I’ve grown up with get absolutely destroyed because the studios producing them care more about selling toys and merchandise to kids than actually making a good story for kids to look back on when they’re older. I have quite a few Disney movies that aren’t particularly liked as much as others, but they hold a special place in my heart, and it breaks my heart so much to see what Wish could’ve become if Bob Iger wasn’t obsessed with making money and just doesn’t give a crap about making good movies anymore. The worst part is Wish could’ve easily been a Renaissance level movie if Disney had just trusted the original story, but no. They cared more about financial gain than actually celebrating Walt’s legacy and his mark in the entertainment industry in general. Walt Disney would be absolutely heartbroken by what his kingdom has become, a mega corporation that only cares about money and milking beloved franchises to death for every last penny. I hope more people see this video!

Thank you for this very interesting and detailed comment, I love reading people's in-depth opinions. I also think anime is one of the last keepers of 2d animation and it breaks my heart seeing older watercolor-y Disney that feels like a painting compared to the new visuals that look plastic-y or dull like in Wish. I'm not sure why they were so stuck on the idea of blending watercolor and 3d for Wish when it clearly wasn't working, the whole movie is colored in a depressing flat gray, what kinda mood is that setting. Plus they really misunderstood what creates nostalgia, nostalgia isn't seeing some objects you've seen before in a previous movie and going "yaaay", nostalgia is getting you to feel something familiar. That can't be achieved through "things" but rather, good writing and understanding of emotions a.k.a it could've been achieved through an original story that just carried a familiar feeling. I wonder if all that pursuit of money is what made them so detached from people and feelings, after all Walt Disney built something up from the ground, faced struggles, while modern Disney has been given an already established legacy and maybe some of the people on the top (like Bob Iger) really don't know how to value it. Sad to see greed ruin art, so like you, I applaud Miyazaki for all he does, and I hope there will be people who follow in his footsteps and try to keep the spirit of good art alive. As for you, I'm curious what are the not so popular Disney movies that you personally like?
@kristinahuchison2511
@kristinahuchison2511 3 месяца назад
@@duskytalkz well, as you and several other people have pointed out, Wish is clearly a corporate product and not an actual story honoring Walt’s legacy. Its so ridiculous how many references and Easter eggs they jammed into the movie, specifically Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan and Cinderella. I get having small nods that you don’t catch the first time, but having several blatant references is just so annoying. It reminds me of the sequels that sometimes included nods from better movies just proving how bad the sequel is, specifically the Micky Mouse Sorcerer’s hat in the Hunchback 2. And it’s honestly so insulting and annoying the main reason they chose not to make Wish a traditional 2D handdrawn movie is because “its too hard” and how many layoffs they had. I honestly feel bad for the people forced to work on it and weren’t paid nearly enough, and they’ve admitted to not liking the changes inflicted on the movie either. As for the movies I still enjoy, Pocahontas is definitely one of them. This movie just hasn’t aged well for a lot of people and it feels like it gets more hate every year. And its to the point a lot of people don’t understand Pocahontas or John’s characters, calling her too serious (when she’s pretty free and laidback) and John an irredeemable monster who didn’t deserve her love. I definitely understand the egregious liberties Disney took with her story and how this felt more like a big joke and mockery towards Native American culture and making them feel like their history and stories don’t matter, or even downplaying the harsh reality of what their people went through when the English came and basically portraying it as a joke.
@kristinahuchison2511
@kristinahuchison2511 3 месяца назад
@@duskytalkz some other movies I don’t think get enough credit would be Atlantis the Lost Empire, Brother Bear, Tarzan, and different ones from the dark age of Disney. They all have special things about most of them that Wish completely ignored to “play it safe” for the sake of profit. It’s honestly so sad yet ironic the most popular character of Wish isn’t even in the movie. Starboy and Asha had the potential to be one of the most popular couples, and frankly I actually really liked Asha’s original character of being more timid and reserved, while Star kinda reminds me of Naveen and Flynn with his goofy outgoing personality, perfect for helping Asha break out of her shell
@duskytalkz
@duskytalkz 3 месяца назад
@@kristinahuchison2511Yeah whenever I ponder over where things went wrong in a certain movie, I do stop and think that probably many of the artists and writers had a vision but someone above them had different priorities, very unfortunate how that whole system is set up, to be a cog in a corporate machine when you've got a creative soul has to be one of the scariest things I could imagine can happen to an artist professionally Pocahontas, that's really interesting I need to revisit it, as a kid it didn't capture my attention for some reason but it'll be cool to look on the relationship dynamic there from my grown up perspective. And as for Disney taking liberties with the story, definitely not their first time, but I understand why when it borrows from actual history, it has to be done with more care. The other examples are also really good, Brother Bear is my favorite Disney movie, I was so shocked when I saw how many people dislike it 😂 but I've been seeing in recent times more people talk about it positively so there's hope. And ooo boii the Starboy and Asha situation, I'm definitely making a video where I'll include them as part of the point cuz boi o boi do I have opinions 😂 but yeah definitely agree that it's so disappointing that they scrapped that whole concept.

@@duskytalkz oh, I’ve already seen plenty of fanart for Starboy and Asha, and from the sounds of the original story Starboy and Asha could’ve easily become one of my favorite couples. Absolutely love his design and having a more goofy and mischievous personality like Flynn. Yes, I really do enjoy Brother Bear despite its not a personal favorite. I really enjoyed the more accurate presentation of Inuit culture and Kenai’s faulty relationship with his brothers, especially Koda. The thing that’s the biggest problem for me is the fact it basically became Open Season when Kenai becomes a bear. The humor is so dumb and aimed at kids, and the moose brothers Ruk and Tuk were in it too much. They ruined the most emotional part of the movie when Koda’s trust in Kenai is destroyed and Kenai feeling overwhelming regret for his actions. It didn’t help the song plays during the part he’s telling Koda the truth instead of after, so its pretty irritating seeing Disney fumble a very sad and emotional scene. But yes, it deserves more recognition imo. Even the sequel wasn’t too bad in comparison to other sequels, I actually found Nita to be an interesting character and wish she had more personality than being limited to Kenai’s love interest. As for Pocahontas, it holds a special place in my heart ever since I was a kid and Colors of the Wind remains my favorite Disney song because of the nostalgia it carries and why I fell in love with Pocahontas and John Smith as a couple. Note, I knew the real story of Pocahontas before watching the movie, so my mind simply processed the movie as a fictional story. But anyways, I wish more people would at least acknowledge and respect what Disney tried doing with the movie instead of ridiculing it as nothing more than a huge insult and slap in the face to Native Americans and their culture. I’m still under the belief if Disney had completely fictionalized the characters and inspired it by the legend of Pocahontas, more people wouldn’t be so hard on it nowadays. Hercules is a famous example of taking huge liberties with the original story of Heracles and completely lying about the actual characters of Zeus, Hera and Hades, amongst other nitty gritty details, but it’s still pretty popular for a lot of people, and sadly Pocahontas took all the heat. I’m even working on my own Pocahontas story if you want to take a look sometime :)

I'm probably one of the few people who thinks WDAS JUST started to decline: 1. "Raya" deserved to be a musical (with specific SEA distinctions, ie Heart being a land inspired Vietnam or Malaysia). The writers saying songs would take away from the seriousness of the film obviously haven't seen the 90s Disney films. 2. "Strange World" was so gwneric, I can't believe Disney made it. They chose a space exploration story, yet none of the designs or ideas felt fresh. 3. The OG concepts for "Wish" sound so great, I'm suspicious about the circumstances of production, especially since Jennifer said "This Wish" was written before the script and Julia said the music team had very little to go off of, story-wise, with about one storyboard (idk if she meant per song or overall; probably the former). 4. We could've easily had a high-budget "Moana" tv show AND an original, unrelated Pacific Islander musical this year instead. Since "Moana" was predominantly inspired by Polynesia (with research done in Samoa and Tahiti, as well as the Melanesian island of Fiji), we could've covered a Micronesian or Melanesian culture instead. And I'm not saying we can't have sequels, original stories, and 3D films, but striking a balance between 2D and 3D, adapting more fairy tales, and spacing the sequels out more would be ideal for me.
@duskytalkz
@duskytalkz Месяц назад
Raya begin a musical would've been cool, but to me it had more problems than that. I felt like I wanted to explore the different kingdoms/areas? (I've forgotten their name) more but we brushed past all of em and the ending was morally questionable Agreed about Strange World, yikes Wish had many issues I think one of the main ones being that they rushed it, unfortunately for our fast paced standards, good art actually requires time, many drafts and letting the concept crystalize naturally, when you rush it because of deadlines the result will be unsatisfactory Moana tv show would've been really cool I agree A balanced approach to 2d, 3d, original stories and sequels would indeed be nice but alas..
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer Месяц назад
@@duskytalkz Oh, Raya had HUGE problems with it's message (Namaari will always be iffy in my eyes), and I feel like that combined with the travel story of exploring and uniting other lands makes it better suited for a series rather than a movie. I also question why they went the tribal approach when there were many SEA kingdoms in history. In my personal opinion, Moana, the Frozens, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, and Encanto were best as 3D (for effects or otherwise) while the rest could've been 2D. And I feel like Disney should be revoluntionary (for an animated film studio) and set up it's films for sequels rather than making them one-offs and then an unrelated sequel because it was successful. It's risky, but still!
