That's kind of ironic because all the fandom wanted for the longest time was story progression and the show runs straight up said they weren't giving us that. The entire train episode is an attempt to subtly tell the audience the status quo is priority over evolution.
If at the point the galactic government caught him , instead of becoming a mad god, it would turn serious, very much serialized, dramatic, with stakes, perhaps Morty and even Jerry trying to save him with stuff found in the garage and maybe some mega intelligence seeds, less humour, that would be change too. Change is fine. Being just bad isn't.
@@scooterdaniels1444 the thing about thoes later seaons are that the lows kinda low but the highs imo pay off, i actually layed off watching season 7 specifically, for about year. I gave in and gave it a shot but honestly it wasnt that bad, the story heavy episodes truly do pay off. AND season 6 is really good idk why people dislike it its definitely one of the better ones
the "Rick and Morty's fall into inconsistency" RU-vid video essay has become a lot more played out than anything on the show itself. I'll always be here for the new episodes
The last season has been comparable to season 1-3 in my opinion. Maybe you perceive the first 3 seasons as a lot better cause of the emotions you felt when you first watched it.
The earlier episodic episodes were peak Rick and Morty. The alien simulation, purge, inception episodes to name a few. The characters had specific mannerisms, Inter personal dynamics, specific humor to the situation. The characters weren’t insufferable, the jokes weren’t over done meta analysis, the mannerisms genuinely made me laugh. RIP peak Rick and Morty, you will be missed.
Season 7 was one of the best. They're all good episodes except for that Numericons one. Hate to go all copypasta, but I think you've missed the mark on some of the characters and themes and maybe the show just isn't for you.
The show is actually better now it just has less of a mainstream following and that’s not a bad thing cause fuck it was embarrassing to like this show prepandemic and I like it a lot better with the new voice actors cause their performances are so much more layered than Justin Roiland’s rambling tbh.
Bro what I thought you were going to talk about the voices of the characters and how the writing went horrible and the voices were bad and how they eventually got to be better with the voices and made the writhting good again like bro the point of Rick’s me Morty that’s funny is that their problems are solved easily like when Morty says in the season 4 finale that he killed the guy off screeen
You are extremely articulate and I agree that the main issue is the building of serial narrative in the beginning only for there to be dissonance between the serial and episodic nature.
Pretty similar thing that happened to The Simpsons, just in a shorter frame of time. Fans called it 'zombie Simpsons.' The same thing happened to Rick and Morty. Coregulations to the 'writers.' We had one of the greatest adult cartoons ever, now we have zombie Rick and Morty.
I gave up on the show after the abysmally horrible season 7 opener which is legit one of the most offensively bad episodes of any show I’ve watched. That being said, I think I still have a more “rose-colored glasses” perspective on seasons 4-6 than you, there are still some decent and good episodes in that bunch (even in episodes you considered “bad”). The snake time travel episode, the meta train episode, the “Asimov Cascade” episode, the last 2 or 3 episodes of season 5, the season opener of season 6, along with some of the good episodes you mentioned (although I still can’t get fully on board with the fortune cookie episode, that felt a little too dumb). In future rewatches, there will be a few episodes I will skip or want to skip, but there are more “non-skip” episodes than skippers for me.
There are good episodes in season 4 and 5 but they’re fewer and far between coupled with new progressively worse low points. I still rewatch seasons 4 and to a lesser extent 5. It’s still worth it despite the overall poor quality.
@@timothyvincent8133 I did end up watching season 7, and I will say the last episode of season 7 is a masterpiece and one of the best of the entire show. Most of the rest of it sucks with a few minor exceptions.
TNG pulled off the side character focus episode with lower decks. What made it work was they chose side characters who were younger mirrors of main characters.
People in the comments are disagreeing, but i don't know why. You're spot on. I used to want to watch the newest episode of rick and Morty, now i get all i want from clips on tik tok
they're brainwashed fans man, they have no sense of quality, this show died a long time ago, the nail in the coffin for me was when Justin got exposed.
Xiaolin Showdown (the original, not chronicles) did the whole episodic show with overarching elements right. It kept character development done in each episode without making the characters feel like completely different people in the next episode. There was a problem with episodes being shown somewhat randomly, fir example if you see part 2 before 1 of a 2-part episode, but that isn't a problem with writing.
It feels like you had the idea to rag on the show before season 7 came out and then didn't pay attention to the near universal praise around the show getting its groove back. I'm also not sure you understand what this show is actually about... can't refute all your points in a RU-vid comment, but yeah - maybe try analyzing a different property?
Nah i agree with you... I know a lot of people are saying that they loved season 7 but to me it was meh to as bad as the sperm episode... I feel like the worst part was the way they tied up Rick prime in that they essentially made evil morty a mary sue and made all of Rick's trauma fucking pointless. So Rick's been tracking this guy for DECADES... he has murdered THOUSANDS of other Rick's in an attempt to get to Rick prime who, btw, only started having prominence in 2 episodes one season ago. And then evil morty just comes in and INSTANTLY... no struggle what-so-ever, gives rick the info to locate Rick prime, or at least the clone that takes him directly to rick prime's strong hold that then leads to Rick prime. If it was that easy, that simple that it was resolved in a 1 minute scene then why the fuck and how the fuck does rick have trauma that lasted YEARS with no resolution. The show tells one thing and then shows another. Then they just go and evil morty basically has to defeat Rick prime for rick... what the fuck. What happened to the build up and the pay off? Then the tonal whiplash... they will constantly go from talking about Rick's depression to then making a joke about it completely ripping any deep moment away as if they're scared to have a serious moment. Like he tells his entire backstory and has to call it his crybaby backstory absolutely ruining all investment on how serious it was ( you know which was also further desecrated when they went on to find the source of his trauma in 1 minute). There are also countless other problems such as erasing character development or thinking that just because they call out a troupe that they're using it makes it less bad but it still stands. It just isn't good anymore and it's sad to see. Like josh said, I used to be happy to see this show but now it's just sad, like watching a dying relative who is no longer themselves be forced to suffer on hooked up to a life support machine. Essay over.
After witnessing the migraine simulator "High on Life", I knew Roiland had to be nothing but a detriment to the story's plot (the only interesting part of the show, if not for the story it'd just be a collection of dumb adventures where no one learns anything). Like it's incredible that the man _can't _*_shut up._* The "game" just makes you feel like the show would have been entirely interdimensional television if it were up to him. iTV isn't even remotely good either, so many parts are painfully low effort improv. _(just like the entirety of HoL's dialogue..)_
I would say that the show relied so much upon weird surrealism that it had to burn out pretty early. When making a show like Emmerdale, where people go about their merry day, you can make 10000 episodes, but when you're making a show like Rick and Morty, you have to come up with completely crazy things all the time, to keep the viewers. How many of you could even come up with one of the episodes from S1? Same goes with shows like Ugly Americans and Adventure time. The former did the right thing, and stopped after two seasons. But some shows just keep squeezing.
Just started watching the show since month ago and all the episodes and seasons are 🔥 maybe cuz I don't dig it too deep and let my own eyes explore th episodes 😼
They have their own way of doing things because they choose to use side characters for some episodes just for Kicks . You are too hyper critical of this show . This show has no expectations at all, so saying that they're on a downfall is actually incorrect. Yes, I agree. Some of the stuff they put out is pretty s*****, but. The majority of the episodes are pretty funny. I think that's all they are really going for , not a chronological storyline. The chronological storyline, it's a jest side piece😂
Dude you are so spot on with the side character point. I felt that exact same way while Watching The Office and they started to talk more about Erin and her life. I just knew the show was dead because they spent her whole beginnings making her as an identical Pam and then when nobody wants it, they give her the same problems Pam has. Clearly the show was running out of ideas 😭😭
"No bro, you don't understand bro! Rick and Morty is good again bro! Reddit says so bro! Trust me bro! You're just not smart enough to undersrand the high IQ comedy, bro!"
Sweet semen of baby Jesus, you’ve basically NAILED it. You’ve earned a subscribe from me and I subscribe to almost no one. Our views on this are nearly identical. I believe it is hard to make a show both episodic and serial but the creators did a tremendous job of it in the first 3 seasons. I really think the biggest downfall of this show is the deal they struck with Adult Swim. If I’m not mistaken they even stated that they made each of the first 3 seasons as if it would be the last because there was no guarantee they’d be renewed. After the deal, between being required to develop content faster and being guaranteed to have following seasons, they’ve made episodes out of the worst ideas and are okay with releasing poor quality because there’s no chance of cancelation. Following the deal, Rick and Morty RARELY (basically nonexistent in seasons 6 & 7) features the expertly crafted combination of hilarious, stupid, intelligent, emotional, and thought provoking moments that the show nailed nearly every episode in the early seasons. The quality has nosedived and anyone still arguing this point can take a look at the recorded views of each season. The numbers are clear that more and more are rapidly abandoning this show and it began with season 4. Season 7 was an absolute train wreck. Rick Prime and the Hole were the only acceptable episodes and even they weren’t very good. They just feel so much better when surrounded by the trash heap that is the rest of season 7. The BEST episodes of season 6 & 7 are by far worse than the WORST episodes from season 1-3. I also agree on the voices. All the gripe that the voices made season 7 bad is laughable. The season is almost unwatchable and it has absolutely nothing to do with the voice changes or Roiland being let go. Roiland was there for season 6 and it sucked almost as much. The only possible disagreement here I could possibly muster is Total Rickall being one of the best episodes of the series. I was surprised to find out it was so liked recently as I thought it was one of the weaker entries in season 2. That’s not to say it’s bad because overall I believe season 2 & 3 of Rick and Morty are probably the best seasons of any adult animation ever made. I say all this not to be a prude though, I would’ve take the Adult Swim deal in their shoes and likely done the same things. It just sucks to see one of the best shows out there turn into something that is becoming unwatchable.
Im so tired of these lazy ass parodies of something famous, „look people its Jurassic Park, do you see it? So cool huh??“ in the later show these episodes are basically 100% filler
Very good points, the show is aimless and all over the place, and you pointed out exactly why. The comments are coping hard, I didn't even know people still cared about this show enough to defend it.
What happens when a studio swaps out all the old writers and directors, not only that but for obvious DEI hires, the women writers are just pouring in from season 3 and onwards and they did tend to write the worst episodes. Fun fact, the head writer and director of She-Hulk, Jessica Gao, wrote Pickle Rick. It's very obvious when you look at each episodes writers. Really sad.
Pickle Rick was a great episode though. However it’s interesting that a lot of the writers here went on to work for Marvel at the same time Marvel completely tanked in quality as well.
@@enesutku34 he forever tainted the show, I was already on the border of leaving it anyways but in January 2023, I officially abandoned the show and haven't watched anything past Season 6, the show's dead to me, I can't even enjoy the older seasons anymore because of Justin.
