The Downfall of Terry Labonte: What Happened During the Frosted Flakes Era?

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS: 2 NASCAR Champions and Hall of Famers represented the lonestar state well. Brother Terry Labonte was the most successful, winning 22 races and 2 championships. His peak was in the 90s, in which he succeeded with the red and yellow Corn Flakes colors. The 21st century, meanwhile, would see the dawn of the Frosted Flakes Era. One of the greatest paint schemes of all time (in my opinion) and it was supposed to resurge the veteran past a mild decline. Unfortunately, that era would mark as the Downfall for the Iron Man. Find out what happened by watching the video.

To be fair, the focus at Hendrick Motorsports during the 2000's was squarely on the 24 car and later the 48 as a sort of "dynamic duo". As Terry's career began to wind down, he did a lot of "live testing" for the organization during many later races. This focus and testing lead to several of the mentioned mechanical DNF's.

I was a huge Terry fan and I was so happy he won in 2003. I was really excited to see him compete for a championship in 2004 but when it didn't happen, I was crushed. And then for him to retire, I was so sad about it. He was my driver and I miss cheering him on every week.

Terry Labonte was my first favorite driver as a kid. I remember buying his #5 or #44 Racing Champions diecasts at Big Lots or Family Dollar, and I spend hundreds of hours playing with those cars. His older cars were the first cars I didn't take out of the box, and I still have them in the box now 15 years later. When he almost won at Sonoma in 2006 in the 96 car, I was so happy. That's one of my first memories watching a race. He always just seemed like a genuine guy to me, and I liked that. I still cheered for him when he'd run the 32 at the restrictor plates a few years ago. This is a good look at his downfall. Honestly, I think it was a product of age more than it was the crash. He started falling off before it happened.

Terry Labonte started tailing off in 1997, where he wasn't qualifying all that well, he still won a couple of races in that span. Terry never was one to win a bunch of races, but he would always take good care of his car and bring the thing home at least. He had a couple of hard hits and injuries in 2000 that beat him up real bad and it hurt his pride as well because he wanted so badly to drive the 2000 Brickyard 400 but he could not. Then after that year or so, once the younger talent started becoming a regular threat that is when Terry Labonte started going downhill and I also believe that the 3 race schedule had a lot of do with it as well because before 2001, they only ran 31-33 races, the veterans never ran a season that long so there is gonna be drop-off. At least Terry was able to win one more time in 2003 at Darlington which was the site of his first win in 1980.

I thought the same thing. I was thinking wow, what is this all about? Did I miss some big scandal that Nascar kept quiet?? Terry raping kids?? Caught dealing meth with Jeremy Mayfield?? Sent to prison for tax fraud?? No, it's just what happens to every driver if they hang around long enough. For some it happens sooner, for some later. Some quit while they are at the top of their craft, but it isn't worthy of this narrative. An interesting story for sure and I'm thankful for it, but would be better received without the click bait headline.

Yeah for real. And using words like “depressing”. He doesn’t even know Terry. For all we know Terry could have been nonchalant about everything and just cool with what was. That’s life. And that’s racing. Ups and downs. Terry had his fair share of struggles in 1990-1993 before he ever got to Hendrick. Never won those 4 years prior. NASCAR is the most competitive racing in the world - especially in the 2000’s. Terry still had some occasional good runs in the 2000’s and had a fair amount of bad luck......I’m just so thankful for 2003. A top-10 finish in the standings and a win at Darlington was a hell of a year.

Yes, I remember it was at Bristol night race. A real cheap shot by Dale Earnhardt, who was usually giving cheap shots in the left rear corner of cars ahead of him going into the turns. Labonte clearly have the better car that night and everyone I know on spoke with about that race agreed. Terry Labonte and his brother Bobby or class racers which is a lot more than I can say about Dale Earnhardt who would speak derogatively about anyone who would come nearest car racing on a track. I met him twice in person even got his autograph so I could sell it and Earnhardt wouldn't say a word to anyone standing in line either time. He had a lot of enemies still congratulating him honest first win at the Daytona 500. and they wouldn't have had one half the races he did if it wasn't for dirty tactics on the race track, fact.

TWICE!!! He did it the first time right out of turn 4 and terry still crossed the line first and won, then he did it earlier in the lap the VERY NEXT YEAR and got the win on a very clearly intentional spin but nascar refused to do any sort of penalization of Earnhardt. Terry was my driver when i first became a fan in 98’ up until he retired and as a fan that was the day i started cheering against Earnhardt.

I remember Terry almost won at Sonoma in 2006 in the 96 car on a road course and he got incredibly gas mileage like he always did but his tires were worn but he still finished third. Makes me wonder if Hendrick was just using the No.5 with Terry as an R and D car. Junior Johnson said he won more money with Terry than he did anybody because Terry never tore anything up 99% of the time he brought the car back in one piece so he didn’t have to fix anything. As far as Bristol goes Terry had Earnhardt beat and Earnhardt knew it and didn’t have the racing skills to think his way back around Terry so he had to use a cheap shot. As Terry said after the race when told Earnhardt didn’t mean to spin him out Terry said he always says that it just happens that way.

The issue was with HMS and Dehart. He was not known for working well with the other crew chiefs or sharing information. He also did not use the wind tunnel and how to get the most out of the aero package on the Monte Carlo. Dehart was an old school crew chief and as the 2000's approached his setups were long outdated when coupled with the new aero factors. Jim Long arrived and stated that all the cars in the 5 shop were awful aerodynamically.

What you failed to state was that after his wreck, Terry Labonte's race team had a buget 20x smaller than Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson. So for every dollar spent on the number 5 car Hendricks Motorsports spent $20 on Jeff Gordon's car. Also Terry Labonte was forced to give up track position to the younger drivers so they would look better. If Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnsons pit crew had a hard time the number 5 crew had to send crew members to replace them while the number 5 car was pitted by a short handed crew.

I would also add that the money is so much greater that drivers don’t need to stay on as long as they once did. This is also being seen in football. Where the 5 team did things that have always worked and they didn't want to try anything the 24 was doing. They didn't keep with the times as far as what was changing. It's kind of funny in a way that Kyle bush got both labonte brothers former car numbers and got them more successful victories!🤔💗 growing up I loved the labonte brothers especially Bobby's interstate batteries car to me his most successful car!! But my #1 driver will always be Jeff Gordon #24ever!!💗

He won the last Darlington labor day race in 2003 before NASCAR screwed up and gave the race to California before bringing it back. Still my favorite driver of all time.

The wrecks in 2000 at Daytona and New Hampshire was the beginning of the end for his career. He was always known for being consistent but he lost that after those wrecks and injuries

There was no downfall. Just the end of a career. No one wins forever that's just NASCAR. Except maybe Kyle Busch.

2000 was really the beginning of the end. He got the concussion and that was when the team started to slip. HMS as a whole was in transition. 1999 was misleading in a way since he was leading off of turn 2 at the Bristol night race on the last lap.... Glad he got the last win at Darlington since I didn't fully appreciate that Texas win as I should have done. Also, I loved the Corn Flakes scheme more. The scheme they settled on for the Frosted Flakes wasn't even their best IMO. The 1997 and 2000 specialty ones were better

@@DavidJ867 Yeah, a fleeting moment for an otherwise forgettable run in the Tony The Tiger colors. 2003 was the bright spot but that old Corn Flakes scheme crushed it.

Rusty Wallace never really fell off that bad. He was pretty competitive all the way up until the end. Basically, he was a threat to win even in his final season.

"Downfalls" in racing are a dime a dozen. I think it would be more noteworthy to talk about drivers who actually finished competitive at the end of their full time careers, which is a very short list off the top of my head.
