The downside of Heroism 

Maybe the whole movie itself is not a good one, but gosh... Christopher Reeves here... and way he's acting... This guy so damn GREAT!!! I always thought that when he's in the Superman's suit - he is Superman, but here he proves it's like on the next level of imagination! When I'm watching this, I don't see an actor playing Superman struggling with his problems - I see the damn Superman himself struggling with his problems!

You know what?....I just realized..this scene is a damning condemnation to our society today. When superman is found depressed and corrupted his bright optimistic suit is muted and dead. Somehow in the 80's we saw this as alarming. Forward to 2013 and our champion of Truth, Justice and the American way...(not "and all that stuff") is accepted as normal and cutting edge with his superman suit being dark muted and DEAD. Look at these colors and look at superman man of steel. "the first step in recovery as a Nation is self recognition".....We Are In Big Trouble Folks!!!!!!!!

I know is supposed to be evil n' all but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Man of Steel just lose it once and a while, even without artificial tar infected Krytonite (and why didn't this turn him into a chain smoker) but imagine the pressure to not only living up to everyone's expectations but to save the world too on a daily basis.

if superman were real, and he was going through something like that, i think that would call for a bigger panic seeing him in my area than any natural disaster you can think of

Were you talking about from 2:03-2:10? If so, I think it's because he is in terrible agony being both sick and hypnotized from the kryptonite that his good side as Clark Kent inside is trying to fight his way out which he did, and all that agony and sickness is making Superman angry that he wants to fight out his anger with his good side.

I seem to recall reading the novelization of this movie and the book described Superman's suit as turning black as night.

In Supergirl #3, Luthor used black kryptonite on Supergirl, which caused her to split into two separate people, one wearing Supergirl's traditional costume, and another wearing a black-and-white version. Luthor claimed that he was given the black kryptonite by Darkseid[citation needed], which had similar effects on Superman, creating an evil Superman. See, wha thappened to Superman here is closer realated to black kryptonite than red kryptonite.

Yes it was supposed to be red kryptonite. Red kryptonite has the ability to turn him evil. And there has been at least one instance in the old superman comics that red kryptonite split hiim ( in addition to turning him into a giant ant, turing his skin transparent, making him grow old really fast, temporarily losing his memory, causing him to grow extra arms and legs, and many other things) Black kryptonte did not exist then and therefore was probably not what they had in mind.

And also for you information again. In Superman III Superman wasn't split into Superman Red and Superman Blue so it's not the red kryptonite. Do yourself a favor and watch the video and research it online or go to anyone that seen the movie and ask did Superman split into Superman Red and Superman Blue. Supergirl being split by black kryptonite after Superman III was made doesn't mean the producer and writers of the movie would not have thought about it, so they did thought about it.

This was when movies relied on acting, costumes, rigging, and props. Rather than CGI and Chroma Keying in today's industry. Sad..I love these older movies. A lot of hard work went into these old movies..not like today where all u get is a rushed non thought out story, add special effects, product placements, action, & ta-da! A movie!

He wasn't really drunk, he just happened to be drinking. It was that funky, lab-made kryptonite he was tricked into handling earlier in the film that made him start slippin'.

Good interpretation of that scene. I always thought the same thing. It wasn't that Superman literally split into 2 people, but more like a battle within his own mind but being acted out for the viewing audience. I actually thought Superman III was a really good movie, although not as good as the first 2 movies, so I definitely have to disagree with you on that one. It was definitely more lighthearted but was still a fun movie. It was a hell of alot better than Superman IV which was just trash!

I really like this scene (not the entire movie, although). I believe if someone watched him outside, saw him smash up the junkyard alone. But inside his mind, it was a fight between that sick Superman and Clark Kent, who represents all goodness he learned from his adoptive parents from earth.

She did, and Christopher Reeve played a character shortly before his death. Terence Stamp played the voice of Jor-El on that series, too.

So while there's a huge line of people outside stoked to see Superman, everybody else inside is ho-hum and casual about him being there.

After all the arguments about why BvS is so crappy.... THIS is the answer. No CGI, 3rd in the series and it's still miles better! Why? Clear images, good writing, editing, doesn't try and be too serious etc. etc.

In July 1963 red kryptonite split Superman into Superman Red and Superman Blue and in Superman III the new kryptonite didn't split Superman in Red and Blue like the red kryptonite did in July 1963, therefore it's not the red kryptonite. Also, Jor-El was voiced by Terence Stamp, the general Zod from the the Reeve's movies, from Season 2 to Season 10. Furthermore, Marc McClure (Reeve's Jimmy Olsen) interpreted Dax-Ur, the scientist who created Brainiac, and Helen Slater (the Supergirl from the 80's movie) interpreted Lara-El (Kal-El's mother), both on season 7.
