I had a buddy that was a singer in a band and they were locally and regionally regarded as ok. As the crowds got bigger he still threw up before every show because his nerves were so high. No matter what was said he was just nervous because he was going to be on stage and the thought of putting himself out there just turned his stomach because it was his art, his performance, his words the people there would hear. Artists are weird man, me I am just a bass player so I just go up there and slap shit. So it never bothered me being on stage but I understand the feeling the true artists have.
This is a really impressive video, thank you so much for making it. Due to their relatability, 'Spiral' and 'With Teeth' are 2 of my personal top 10 albums of all time, while 'Still/The Fragile' contain a lot of my favourite NIN songs (the more recent 'The Background World' is probably my #1). Reznor not caring for the 'numb' feeling from antidepressants is a load of s**t though, if he truly had clinical depression. I have to wonder what feeling the smack gave him other than complete numbness.
@@dust-dog Trent said that at some point, he realized he had to deal with his feelings while sober. I believe that's how "The Way Out Is Through" came about. As to why exactly, I would be speculating.
The Fragile is my favorite album of all time. Very significant to me, cuz I lost both parents in less than a year and had a relationship I thought was "the one" end suddenly. I needed to express that deeper part of myself that doesn't show through in any other medium I use.
The Woodstock performance is such an anomaly. Technically it was an awful performance on so many levels, but dammit it is just so raw and full of emotion.
Was there Woodstock '94, right up front stage, what an experience. We had to wait forever for them to come on after the previous acts encores. Covered in mud just like we were, best entrance ever
I'm just like Trent when it comes to unipolar depression. I take meds every day just to get through it. And like Trent, my maternal grandmother accepted me when the rest of my family didn't. I remember when I got my first nose piercing. It was 1991. I hid one side of my face from my parents but I showed my little diamond stud to my beloved grandmother. Her first words were ' I'll get you an emerald stud. It would look so good.' that's why she's my beloved. My beloved Anna.
Hang in there, okay? I'm not going to feed you any hollow platitudes. I don't know how it feels in your head, but I know how the depressive and negative-psychotic part of Schizoaffective Disorder feels in mine. It's f**king rough, and I have nothing but respect and love for others who suffer from depression. I hope you're doing as well as you can be. I hope you're as okay as you can be. I hope life gives you enough bright spots, like your wonderful nana did, to keep you going. 💜
the fact that I've never heard anyone address his grief from his grandma and dog passing before the recording of the fragile is astounding... I love that album and that extra context is really something.
The first time I heard La Mer I cried and remembered thinking to myself "He wrote this instead of killing himself" There was something in the emotion of the song 15 years he proved me right, he spoke to the crowd on stage and admitted that he had in fact written that song instead of committing suicide. He chose to go back to that place to get married to Mary Queen
I remember that wholesome moment from the Closure VHS touring shenanigans of him playing with his dog, had no idea about what happened. Given the overall stress of touring I could only imagine K9 companionship would have helped keep him grounded, RIP :-(
The thing that makes me love Mr. Reznor as a person is that he started out as the typical self destructive rockstar common of that era, but instead of following that path, he chose a different route, one that involved healing and recognition. If you look at him today, you can see how much happier he is by what he has learned throughout the years. May we all be inspired by his story and overcome our darkness.
As someone whonhave dealt with depression and got out of there, The Downward Spiral is my favorite album. I feel it captures the whole experience of going to Hell and coming back. It makes me immensely happy to know that Bowie (also one of my favorite musicians of all time) was a fundamental part on Reznor's recovery. Thank you for this video! Awesome work, man!
So Just want to thank u for ur honest post. We r very much alike . 1st of course obviously both NIN fans . But also have dealt with depression. And the downward spiral is an album that describes what it is like to go thru depression. I have been dealing chronic depression, anxiety n some sleep issues for about 20 years now. Most recently added to that has been for about a year now insomnia. Many years ago ,Idk about 17,dealt with addiction. And Not only do I love the music the lyrics the presence of Trent but also respectful of him for getting thru what he did, being there myself long time ago I know how difficult it can be . Nin has helped me thru it all. It helps hearing lyrics that explain what I’m feeling on the inside and can’t describe or put into words those feelings. knowing here’s this person who is going thru/ has gone thru and is writing and singing about it. Not that I’d ever wish this on anyone else however because of it I don’t feel so alone. Now being born in 83 when pretty hate machine first came out I was only 6 so little young to hear the songs let alone whole album same with the downward spiral . First off at that age had to listen to what my parents did . I didn’t start to be coming into my own and choosing music to listen to until Time period between tds and the fragile .even so I was sheltered and parents would’ve never allowed my to listen to NIN or buy and album as teenager. In high school I was introduced to so many bands esp hard rock like NIN n nirvana etc. even some rap. Friends would make copies of tapes and cds Somehow I was able to finally some cassette tapes and cds of this music , when I got my license but didn’t dare play the music other than in my car or with headphones , if parents would’ve heard prob would’ve thrown them away . Sorry I digress. My point was I feel like I was born in wrong decade or at least few years too late like shoulda been born in like 1976. So wish I would’ve been able to see NiN live in ‘94 ‘95 . When I was first learning about NIN I was also learning about so many other bands at same time pretty much about whole new genre for me and there were so many bands songs I was so behind on knowing even stuff like Floyd and zeppelin . In my early 20s thou i meet someone who was huge fan of NIN. So would really listen to a lot , it was then I finally really became passionate about NiN. At that point I would still listen to other music but became by far my favorite. In 2005 I think or 2006 with teeth tour was my first chance to see live . I didn’t think I could like more but it brought it to a whole new level. It was my second concert ever . And not only did I want to see Nin live as much as possible but other bands began my love affair with concerts. But back to issues I’m still struggling the insomnia has made everything worse. Making life very difficult. Before it was a come and go thing for thru periods of it but now it’s been a year of it non stop. And words can’t express how much even thou I’m still Down In It, wasn’t originally intended but as I wrote it just felt really right . the music of Nin really has helped me thru before and still does. Wish that one day I could thank trent for putting himself out there so much, for being able to put the words to the things I’ve felt n some I still feel. And besides getting me thru tough times just enjoy listening to the music at any time . There prob not a day tha goes by that I don’t listen to at least one song. Many people r judgmental and assume that liking this music makes me angry person or would make me angry it but it doesn’t it’s actually the opposite. It calms me lifts me up helps me thru and just right kick in the ass to get me pumped working out or cleaning or driving kids around all day long . So again I’ll tag k u for ur comment and Trent for the amazing music that means so much to me and so many others like me and it will always have a special place in my heart .
Trent also found tremendous inspiration from Gary Numan’s early music as well. Gary has found inspiration in Trent’s NIN music too. A perfect display of how art can help our minds open doors we never knew existed. Both musicians are good friends too.
It captures the feeling well of going to hell and NEVER returning lol since the album ends with the suicide of the protagonist. But The Fragile is the way out of hell, in-universe and for Trent since he sobered up and decided not to kill himself. For me TDS and The Fragile are Part 1 and Part 2 of Trent's toughest time on this planet
@Carl Keeling just to let u kno since u said u went to rhof, assuming I prob live in Ohio . Anyways there’s a show on nov 13th in Columbus. It’s called Joe Walsh and friends present vetsaid 2022. Since U have never seen live maybe u could make it to that show. Wish I was available to go to see that . Surprised if u live in Ohio u didn’t go to see the show next night after rhof. Ministry opened they were big influence on Trent’s music and most of old touring band members that went to rhof performed on stage with Trent and most recent band for the last around 1/4 - 1/3 of show . Even performed Hey man nice shot rich Patrick doing lead vocals while trent did back up I didn’t actually count but at that point I think there were 9 members past present on stage performing. Awesome.amazing words can’t even describe do it justice . But anyways if u can u should def go, u won’t regret it. Might not seem like u could appreciate music anymore but u will. Fiancé will be going with me to the upcoming show in hopes that he’ll start to appreciate more since he’s more of a rap/ Eminem fan. U won’t regret it . I’ve been to so many concerts but nin was and probably will always be my fav can’t see anything topping it. Being that even thou I like lot of different artists genres but love nin by far my favorite. Like I wrote earlier the music mean so much to me lyrics describe say what I can’t come up with the words for to explain how I feel . And listen if to it for me is therapeutic calms me if I’m angry , . Gets me going at gym ,if I’m sad can bring me to tears at times( but I believe it’s necessary to cry sometimes need to get it out esp when dealing with what I am depression anxiety and insomnia. Just makes me feel better all around. Ive never been on the floor for NiN. So I’m trying to find some reasonable priced tix ones that don’t cost an obscene amt of money ( $1,000 per ticket) just can’t wrap head around or rationalize spending that much for 2 tickets when I’m not haven’t worked in year cause of my issues , have 2 teenage daughters their expensive, and trying to get pregnant since we don’t have kids together and fiancé has no kids biologically his.anywho u should def try to go u won’t be disappointed.
I’ve been following NIN since 1989. I remember seeing the Pretty Hate Tour in a small Tijuana club. I was 19 and walked into the club fully clothed and exited with bruises and cuts and no shirt. He’s a genius and his performances have matured with his sobriety. It’s hard to believe that I’m 52 and just saw NIN in September 2022. Brilliant man.
That’s the second band that I love that’s performed in Tj. How freaking cool is that! I saw them for the first time a few years ago at the Hollywood palladium. They played my favorite set list and while i was on the floor dancing, it felt like an out of body experience and Trent and crew were perfection. ❤
Manson was *never* a good musician. Their only great album was Antichrist - and that was basically a Reznor side project. He co-wrote loads, played on it and helped them put it together. Manson's later albums without Reznor show this.
@@jpgduff manson's music from the first album to "holywood" plus "the pale emperor" are essential. everything else ranges from good to mid to blah. i'm glad trent no longer speaks to him as i'm sure that friendship was toxic and manson ended up being a bigger asshole. let's be happy that trent is alive, sober, content, and has a family.
@@thevoid99 None of them are essential. Some good stuff, sure, but essential is a bit strong. The most coherent and well produced is Antichrist. Eveeything after that was poor. Even live the songs that really shone were Lunchbox etc and Antichrist.

Trents music is so healing. Tracks on The Downward Spiral and The Fragile helped me get through some tough times in life. Trents recent works are equally as good as his past in my opinion.

i'm pretty sure that NIN was one of the core bands that stopped me from self-deleting (sorry for the phrasing, trying not to get MY comment autodeleted) as a young person. it helped me cope for years and The Fragile/With Teeth especially provided me with transformative experiences that changed me for the better. i actually rarely listen to his old stuff any more though, because it brings back too many flashbacks of some really dark stuff i don't want to remember. it was the soundtrack that got me through it though.
I find it hard to believe what a complicated life Trent had. And I'm even more surprised that, despite everything, he has survived and continues making original and magnificent music. Trent Reznor is the greatest! Multi talented! His music is so healing! Helps me transmute my feelings daily! Can't thank Nine Inch Nails as a whole enough! My all time favorite band ever! Seen them once in Nashville in the Pit! Right up front and in Chicago! Was my dream concert! Can't wait to see them again! Their music has saved my life more than once! I love you guys! I really didn't expect much from this video. It was in my watchlist for about 2 or 3 months before I finally got to watching it, but I was so blown away by the sheer quality of this video. I really enjoy NIN's music and I've always wanted to know more about Trent, and you did that job perfectly. Insanely well-made.
With Teeth will always be my fav NIN album. Obvi The Downward Spiral is a superior record, but With Teeth helped me dig out of the deepest hole. Not addiction, but a deeply damaging and abusive toxic relationship. Recovery all the same.

I loved this video; it disturbed me so much to see his spiral into addiction and depression, but as a teenager I didn't think anything of it! NIN has always been my favorite band, so thank you for making such well researched content.
Trent was and still is a huge inspiration to me. His music shaped me as a young man, I'm so happy to see that he is still going at it in a healthy manner.

Growing up with NIИ, Trent Reznors sound really helped me get through some tough days. Good Video, exceptional detail into a side of Trent Reznor I never quite heard of.
I saw him on The Fragility tour with APC and he was in rough shape... seeing him a couple years back on Cold, Black and Infinite was a whole different animal. Much better now, if you have the chance... see them live. It's well worth it.

Trent Resents Perfect Drug as his least favorite work ever but it’s almost a masterpiece!!! When his grandmother died he recorded masterpiece work The Day the whole world went away! The Fragile is nothing short of a true masterpiece!!!!

My brother hid it well...a popular guy with ALL the ladies, but he opted to no longer be a part of the world. I am here because Trent was a fav of my little brother.. And because I have just been told of his song about Courtney Love. I had no idea that they dated! I also heard about the Cielo Dr. door..😢. I'm no fan of MM, he tries to hard. I get the numb- mine antidepressants just hit the trash can. I don't know if I will ever get out of my depression.. my husband passed away recently after 41years of marriage, since we were 17. After a TBI and a broken neck, 360 in the hospital. I just lost my Gucci girl- my constant companion with fur... I am hurting. I'm glad Trent got sober....I get the struggle....

This was amazing man. I had heard a lot of these stories before, but you put them in such a different light. I even learned a few things I didn’t know before. Trent is living proof anyone can pull themselves out of whatever dark place they are in. Great work and I can definitely see the effort you put into this.
Man this is awesome! i grew up listening to nin, got fucked up on heroin and crack pretty bad around 2008 and got clean in 2013 (besides psychedelics, anyway). Trent's music has seen me thru it all. great video 👍
I’m not a big fan, but I respect him for being a true artist. The video for “the perfect drug” was his lowest point where he briefly tried to incorporate a more commercial sound, and visuals. I actually saw them at the Hampton Coliseum in VA with Manson, & Jim Rose, & it was the best concert of my life (I was in 8th grade). It really felt like anything could happen at any moment, they were smashing keyboards, and tossing mic stands at each other, it was truly exciting. Nobody even knew who Marlyn Manson was at the time.
All those side projects he had going on would of been great. Phil Anselmo, Maynard Keenan and Trent Reznor. Literally some of my favorite vocalists. Their styles seem like they wouldn’t really fit together but if they had made it work, that would of been legendary.
Trent Reznor gets sober and makes the Fragile. Metallica gets sober and makes St Anger. The Fragile is my favourite NIN album. I'll never forget...not knowing an album was coming out...one day seeing a single in HMV...and taking it up to the listening station. Three strums of The Day The Whole World Went Away and I was calling out to the sales assistant. "Is there an a whole album, or just the single??" 2 minutes later and I was walking out of the mall with the Fragile - a Double! I was so excited, knowing it would be good just by the opening riff I heard. That album became the soundtrack of that summer. I converted my friends, my gf...everyone! Even my GF's little boy started saying "No You Don't!", picking it up from the song..or us singing it or something! lol. My Girl ended up getting me tickets to see them at the Big Day Out (around 2000, 01 ish) where they killed it. I didn't even stay for the Chilli Peppers...NIN was who I went for - and they slew! I never knew this was Trents' "Recovery" record. As it happens, I was in early sobriety then too, my first two years of sobriety...such a vivid time to remember. I never knew the Fragile was Trents' early sobriety record, too. That's cool..
Much respect and gratitude for this piece! Have always loved this man and his music. Though I've never met him, I feel connected. I never found my "person/partner" in life and I know if given the chance it probably would of been Trent.

@@ResonantPeak Reznor stated that he wasn't comfortable with a lot of The Fragile - given the events that preceded it I think that's underatandable. Personally I'm.not a fan of The Fragile. I bought Head Like a Hole on it's first release - Pretty Hate Machine/Broken&Fixed/Downward Spiral are the soundtrack to my teens. I just didn't feel the same connection to The Fragile. Still, to this day, I prefer the older stuff.
This is the perfect documentary that shows that being a superstar is an illusion of being at peace with ourselves. Nothing wrong with being world class. But we see money as an identity rather than a tool. We see being famous as an Identity rather than being a musician. Its all about personality, but not about character. You can wear a mask all the time, but if you aren't that person, your just a hollow core. He realized that being a musican is a career. It's not just a one time thing and thats it. Its who you are. The drugs and money are apart of that career, but not the main reason why. But he also realized that drugs do not offer long term benifits. Its awesome that he got himself back together. I remember back in the early 2000s when he got buffed out. I didnt understand why. But now I do. Nine Inch Nails is truly a timeless act and will always hold a place in my heart very few have broken into.

Fragile was so powerful because it was the essence of Trent. It was the realest shit possible, and he hated pretense. That album was like feeding a warm, living, feeling human into a meat grinder, compacting the meat in a hydraulic press, and drinking the pure concentrated extract of the total destruction of a person
In part I agree, although It felt to me like he was expectorating his pain half the time and actually healing and getting himself back up the other half. Powerful indeed.

I always wondered why La Mer was my favorite song off of The Fragile, and one of my favorite NIN songs in general- it's origin being rooted in such a personal and introspective place makes its beauty more understandable, Reznor makes gorgeous art and I'm glad he decided to stay with us in the end :)
I had toxoplasma and wasted my time in 2000s being depressed and a low energy colportage and substance addict. Its pretty sad when ppl get influenced by colportage like that. I cant even describe the loneliness. All thanks to people like Trent. Tnx a lot man. All Interscope 'Cia' agent really helped me to 'get through' lolololololol
This is an amazing documentary! I'm about to listen through their discography, and I gotta say already Trent's whole story is just really inspiring. I've had people around me unfortunately succumb to drugs, so I get how hard it is to quit and get out of it, so the fact he was able to pull himself out of the gutter like that is really amazing.
Sometimes you have to go through traumatic stuff to write good music, but he got out of it and is still making music and beautiful cinematic scores and seems like he stays out of all the dark stuff now. He is one of my biggest inspirations sonically. I hope I get to work with him someday.

Great video. A few things I wasn't aware of! Just a note, though. Clinical depression doesn't exist. All recent studies suggest that there is no such thing as a "chemical imbalance within the brain" that is the root of any sort of depression. Which should be good news, as it gives everyone hope and power over their circumstances, but for some reason people don't want to hear it. /Rant

Trent got me through the hardest time of my life, while my mom was going through cancer. I was young, probably too young to be listening to the dark themes of his music, and too young to completely understand what the meaning was. But as I grew up, I rediscovered the meaning many times over, and I am grateful.
My thoughts on this video, with the History of Trent Reznor and NIN was Great man... Its always Nice to get a mind refresher of a band that u have been a fan of since u were a teenager. Glad i thumbed into this video....

The Fragile is the greatest album ever made. Not just NIN’s best, but THE best by any artist imo. I think there’s only one weak track on the double album - Starf**kers. But the parallels and recurring musical themes and the sound design combined with Trent’s lyrics all elevated a great album to the GOAT album. Decades later, I still notice things I haven’t heard before with a really good pair of headphones. Little things that have been hidden in the mix that just required the right circumstance or shift in perspective to finally hear. I’m in awe of what he accomplished with this album and I just wish it didn’t require him to damage himself so deeply in order to make it.
I remember when I was in the middle school and had an ongoing obsession with NIN. It still lives inside me after all these years. I will forever consider him one of the greatest, intelligent, sensitive artist. I owe him so much. I wouldn't be here without nine inch nails. Forever greatful.

That is so strange, I've read at least 3 interviews when The Fragile was released and he said that he made the ENTIRE album there in the Big Sur house.
That was a strange spot to end this video. Ironically, that time in my life being my darkest hour. This was one of a few bands that helped keep me alive, it seems. Or...breathing. I almost offed myself close to that time. Though it was a whole other band that stopped me, I still find NIN something that soothes the darker side of something I endured.
