I have a question, why did Maul survive after being cut in half and falling down a massive shaft, yet Quigon died after being stabbed in the stomach and being attended by Obiwan? being cut in half is obviously more lethal than being stabbed
@@Daniel-ms9ks It was stated that his rage kept him alive. It actually worked against all logic. Even Darth Sion would be impressed; and that guy is literally just too angry to die.
in my opinion the tarkin doctrine has always had one HUGE glaring flaw. people who fear you will grow to hate you, and the longer that fear goes on the more they will hate you. that hate will cause unrest and eventually rebellion. so in my opinion the entire idea is ultimately self defeating.
Agreed. Eventually hatred and rage overcomes fear and people fight back, regardless of how scared they are. Honestly, Tarkin really wasn't as smart as he thought he was. I get the whole quantity vs quality arguements (although I still prefer quality most of the time over quantity.) but ripping away the Stormtroopers identities ironically probably damaged moral in the long run, especially when the Galactic Civil War heated up. Stormtroopers may be better trained than Rebels, but Rebels had way more to fight for.
The only way I can see it working was if it inspired fear in new ways. If it can keep up the fear by constantly utilizing new fear mechanisms then it would be able to work.
@@aidanrickord7790 but even then it probably wouldn’t be work. It’d eventually be like “turn on the radio and let’s hear what today calamity is” kind of mundane. People will stop giving a shit after some time of the fear cycle.
@@LoneSilverW0lf not if it’s potent enough. Fear is one of the strongest emotions as it is meant to keep species alive. If you can continuously abuse this fact by finding and exploiting a variety of different fear based variables the philosophy becomes viable.
I guess the point is, you must fear only if you are a rebel, but if you are a civilian, these guys are kinda protecting you All the fear ideology may work, loo at North Korea and all totalitarian countries in our world (and of course it's a piece of shit) Actually it will work in long term, but If you establish this order suddenly, people will resist
Yep. All of that backstabbing helped to cripple the empire as well. With the most corrupt /conniving gaining important ranks, even though they may have not been fit for the job, while the best of them were stuck in lower ranking positions. Which had the effect of making some of them join the Rebellion.
@@ladygrey7425 It reminds me of an old factory job. We didn't get the most capable+ experienced group leaders, who were great at their jobs, We got the group leaders that were great at kissing the supervisor's ass.
Thats how the military functions, the enlisted ranks has an upper limit...the officer corps does not. Officers are constantly trying to claw above each other.
The bit about keeping their armour clean despite the tactical disadventage actualy reminds me of a Quote from 40K that fit pretty well to the train of thought: "The uniforms of the Imperial Guard are camouflaged in order to protect their wearers by hiding them from sight. The principle is that what the enemy cannot see he cannot kill. This is not the way of the Adeptus Astartes. A Space Marine’s armour is bright with heraldry that proclaims his devotion to his Chapter and the beloved Emperor of Mankind. Our principle is that what the enemy can see, he will soon learn to fear…" -Chaplain Aston, of the Fire Hawks 10th Company
To be fair, guardsmen aren't 8ft super soldiers who can take a beating and keep going, guardsmen are just normal people who fight the same shit space marines do
And even then the guardsmen regiments in general don't really take advantage of their *""camouflage""* or more muted colors. (atleast for most generic regiments) One. Because most of the time they're either using human wave tactics to overwhelm enemy positions or have waves of horrific monsters rushing their defenses making any bland color scheme virtually pointless. And two. Their primary infantryman weapon, the infamous *"lazguns",* basically and inherently tells enemies were fire is coming from with extremely visible lines of lasers, especially sense alot of the time the only way their weak arms are effective against many of their larger foes is in mass volleys of extremely bright lights, a crescendo of deadly beams, not even remotely subtle.
@@navilluscire2567 against the traitor marines the lasguns are weak due to the armor, it's made of ceramite which is stated to reflect the lasgun beams causing it to do little damage, not kidding against armor made from certain materials like the space marine's ceramite the lasgun stuggles cause of the materials reflective properties
In an ironic twist, the beings meant to replace clones became clones themselves. Not in genetics, but in the way they were supposed to act and look. The soldiers of the empire were individuals but they were taught to ignore all individuality.
Yet it was the unique personality of the Republic clones after earning their own "names"/ personality that was instrumental in saving so many people so many times. Ironic. The Emipre says clones are to susceptible to brainwashing. Yet push the stormtroopers to be more clone like. What a......."Tragedy"
Stormtroopers were individuals forced to ignore their individuality whilst clones were identical yet encouraged to embrace their differences and uniqueness.
@@alessiodecarolis But didn't they establish it so the stormtrooper armor dissipates the energy of a blaster bolt that it rather incapacitates the wearer rather than killing them?
I just had a theory. Now Tipoca City has been destroyed, what will happen when news gets out to clones across the galaxy? That was their home. We saw how eager they were to defend it from the Seppies. Could Rex’s clone rebellion accelerate in size now the Empire has replaced the clones with stormtroopers and destroyed their home?
Some would some wouldn’t, clearly some of them have the ability to rebel and that void still be a massive number, we have no idea what happens next but I do know that many will be retired as mentioned in rebels so the empire still gets away with a lot.
(Spoilers) I think we could potentially see the same scenario that took place on Ryloth where Captain Howzer was trying to convince his brothers that what the empire was doing wasn't too far off from what the separatists were doing. And some of the clones with working chips did agree with him and lay down arms but the majority still followed the empire.
It's funny cause in Allegiance the ISB only ever used numbers. The Stormtroopers on the Star Destroyer were able use their names when off duty and even not wear the armor when in areas that weren't combat based, including the overlooks of the main Hanger Bay.
@@laisphinto6372 oh they are enforced, but the ship was commanded by Ozzel and he HATED the white armor. The Storm Trooper commander didn't want to keep his men stuck in the barracks so they made a compromise
It helps that their CO was bumbling idiot or possible traitor Kendal Ozzel who was actually scared of the Stormtrooper Armor. After all the Empire wasn't as tough, thorough or loyal to Palpatine as it made itself out to be.
As much as I loathe to give the sequel trilogy credit for anything, the fact that Finn was able to overcome such a thorough and soul crushing indoctrination process makes his defection from the stormtrooper Corp all the more impressive and admirable.
:) True that. (I kinda liked Finn personally... Before the rest of the trilogy existed I was willing to see it as a mirror universe, or something...) (Again, personally...)
You know you've gone beyond dehumanising when even the imperium of man for 40K allows most customization and unit expression than you. Good job empire.
When imperial guard regiments are only seen as numbers and not even known to exist by some members of the imperial senate the Lords of terra the Lord commander militant or in some cases any member of the Adeptus administratum
@@BlackIce3190 that or its a written thing by george, i mean ever noticed how there isn't stormtroopers with uniqueness aside from their types and ranks?
For the record, at 3:40, *Echo* was actually the one who made the comment “It’s ironic. Clones wanted names instead of number, now people are lining up to be *given* numbers.” It wasn’t Hunter who said this, and I just want to make sure Echo gets the recognition he deserves.
It's actually similar to how armies in the past ran things. I remember watching a show about the military, where some supreme commander appointed his sons as generals. He absolutely forbade them from calling him "father" and ordered them to get out of his command post until they referred to him as their commander.
And Palpatines Honor Guard took the devotion to the Emperor to even greater heights. Their final test was a duel to the death with a comrade they had trained with closely. And as seen with the case of Kir Kanos, each sliver of regret over what they've done would be punished very harshly.
Does anyone know how many set of armor where made for the first film? Having all your troops with identical armor with a face concealing helmet, must have really help to keep the actual number low and just reuse the same ones over and over. Remember the first SW did not have the almost infinite budget the new ones do.
I have a question, why did Maul survive after being cut in half and falling down a massive shaft, yet Quigon died after being stabbed in the stomach and being attended by Obiwan? being cut in half is obviously more lethal than being stabbed
The Sith can use their hate, pain, and fear to keep themselves alive. There was a dark lord way back in the Old Republic days that just wouldn't die no matter how many times you chop them up or shot him. I believe the Jedi that finally killed him had to get them to let go. And if you know anything about Darth Maul you know he really really really hates Kenobi.
These reasons is why the Stormtroopers were actually the "elite" forces. The regular conscripted forces are the Imperial Army (as seen in Solo) and had much lower standards and not as strict regulations. In Solo we see an officer refer to him by name not by number. So the Imperial Army is the lower quality soldiers while the Stormtroopers were much more trained and indoctrinated.
The whole theory of the stormtrooper is honestly a terrifying thing when you really analyze it, it makes them seem like the perfect psychological weapon. Even if they aren’t the best soldiers, you can’t deny that they were definitely effective at what they did.
@@mojowwwav4357 I mean that's basically what happened in universe with the Rebel Alliance. Everybody was terrified of them, then a few cells started making attacks and showing they weren't so invulnerable as they pretend to be, causing the rebellion to spread like wildfire and snowball out of control
That is basically Palpatine's major problem. When it came to working from the shadows and steadily acquiring power and influence he was phenomenal, amazing at it. But when it came to having ALL that POWER on full display, he basically indulged gleefully and without restraint in his normally *"keep in check"* extreme megalomania through having to rely on a more relaxed, chill, manipulative guise as first a senator and later supreme chancellor during his rise and once he became emperor he ended up *power tripping SO hard he ironically lost the power he so painstakingly built.*
The Empire: how much intimidation do we have to use to keep order? the nature of sapient life itself: *laughs in infinite violence, chaos, and war crimes for all of existence itself*
Hmm. I wonder how this relates to the anonymity of the internet. That is -- when people feel they are anonymous online, they feel more empowered to harass others or say/do controversial things that might otherwise get them backlash or a lasting reputation hit if people knew who they were. Would donning armor that basically makes you the same as a million other people do the same? Thereby enabling some of the worst of the abuses Stormtroopers might have heaped on others.
In the Galactic Empire, committing personal atrocities would be infinitely easier. So long as planets, societies, and races remained compliant with the New Galactic Order, no one cared about how you carried out the Emperor's will. Then again, your very life damn well depended on how you performed in the interest of the Empire. So basically, do whatever you want under the helmet so long as you make sure the Empire gets what it wants by you being it's "White Wave" so to speak. ╭∩╮(^.^)╭∩╮
Honestly I don't know how much anonymity is a part of it. Gonna get a wee bit political here but if you look up some of the ways Cops in America are trained (specifically things like "Warrior Training", and "Sheep/Wolf/Sheepdog" mentality) it's more about giving someone power over people with very few consequences for abuse of that power, while also instructing them that they inherently know better than most people.
@@kamalalsb7292 Mm, that theory sounds too much like the "power is everything" mentality to me, which doesn't take into account the many complexities of the human psyche or the job. There are subjects cops do know better than most people, like how to drive a car, grapple, or the complexities of the law. (And there are, of course, places they most certainly don't!) They are enforcers of the law, so they of course have some power over people, but they also cede power to their sheriffs, the courts, and the law-makers as a regular part of their job. They also cede power to their conscience, if they're good ones. So, no, I disagree.
Too bad most of the media that has come out fairly recently such as rebels and even mando depicts them as jokes lol. Never thought they were all that incompetent in the OT, would love to see them as a viable threat again.
to be fair... when you've got such a small cast of characters, you can't have them be major threats. After all, if they are to be major threats that could hit a fly on the opposite side of a canyon every time the characters encountered one, then the small cast isn't going to last very long. Rebels have the 6 main characters that are in in Imperial territory. They would definitely encounter enough stormtroopers that, if they were deadly accurate, the show would last for less than a season. Mandalorian is in a similar situation. There is basically 5 core characters, with only Mando and Grogu truly being mainstays with the others appearing at various points. If stormtroopers were made to be as much of threat as most people want them to be, the show wouldn't have lasted long enough for 2 season.
@@BenMan8881 I mean the OT had a small cast of characters and handled them perfectly. In the first film they are depicted very competently at the beginning (Tantive IV) and only begin missing shots on the Death Star after being ordered to let the rebels escape as Tarkington wanted to locate the rebel base by racking the falcon. Empire Strikes back does the same, Empire has a strong start on Hoth which did include ground forces (off screen) and ended with the troopers failing to stop the rebels from escaping cloud city. Vader also mentioned before though that the rebels were not to leave the city meaning it’s possible he wanted them alive. There were also only about 3 stormtrooper casualties during the cloud city escape as they were using cover while chasing the rebels unlike in mando where they just run out in the open and often don’t even shoot. Episode 6 may be one of the worst depictions but Endor was full of human eating natives giving them quite the advantage over imperial forces. The few biker scouts at the beginning of the Endor sequence even proved to be a bit of a problem for Luke Skywalker despite being ragdolled by a droid in mando. I’d also like to point out also that there are alternatives to storm troopers as seen by either navy or army troopers. Storm troopers are literally sent to reinforce the navy troopers on the Death Star after they were quickly overwhelmed by Han, Luke, and Chewie. The Stormtroopers quickly overwhelm the rebels making them go down the trash shoot. Even Solo, a Disney film had the audacity to show that army troopers are still a thing and continue to represent stormtroopers as incompetent. Shame as we may be getting Thrawn in post Endor cannon again, hopefully we see some competence from his forces.
I kind of wish that the new shows and media depicted the Stormtroopers as the elite they are, and not the bumbling cannon fodder they're depicted as. But I guess you need a faceless bad guy instead of a normal Imperial Trooper that has a face and name.
It was a mistake both in Legends and Disney Canon to relegate the Imperial Army to a rump role. You have right there a perfect opportunity to depict the regular army as bumbling fools, while preserving the fear factor the Stormtrooper Corps. is supposed to instill. By the end of the day, Stormtroopers are just more recognizable to the average viewer than some dudes in space army fatigues. Such a shame they didn't talk more about the Imperial Army.
That could be considered unnerving for any group of Rebels. Beat a squad of stormtroopers and another comes into attack you. Exactly the same, no faces or expression and just as eager for battle... Remember, your not a Jedi, just some being with a blaster.
(Inspired from another comment) The Imperium of Mankind from 40k: *a massive xenophobic empire that let their soldiers customize their armor and give themselves a level of personality while being one of the many bad guys in the 40k universe* The Empire from Star Wars: *doesn't even let you use your birth name* And everyone sides with the Empire.
5:59 "Scout troopers weren't allowed to paint camouflage on their armor" How different would the battle of Endor have gone if the Empire weren't thus strict on uniform?
Reminds me alot of the Japanese Empire and the tactics they used during WWII. So homicidal and suicidal and based in “Honour” but actually being the most Dishonorable, all in the name of their Emperor.
I hear in Legends that the Stormtroopers were the Elite but the Empire had a massive amount of less equipped troops. What was it like for those troops that were essentially rejects?
And to think, Luke Skywalker was planning to join the Imperial Stormtroopers as a way to get off the desolate rock that was Tatooine when his life's path crossed with that of R2D2 and C-3PO.
fascinating. I'd be interested to see a side-by-side of the psychological aspects of the droid (just b1) and stormtrooper armies and which army did that model better.
jokes on you, HKs do that better. as do the Darktroopers. *This is the part where a new faction of skeleton-shaped droids appears in a new droid uprising :)*
Well, Palpatine succeeded in making them appear inhuman.... When I was little and watched Star Wars for the first few times I always thought they were robots :D
This is why the imperium of man's tempestus scions are the best no terrible armor Very good laser weapons that makes stormtroopers green with envy Really not afraid of the galaxies horrors
You´re comparing an army solely designed to strike fear into their own civilians and supress rebellions, to an army trained and equiped to kill every enemy in the most effectiv way possible on a battlefield.
"How they were made," Good, yes. "what they did in their downtime," Oh interesting, go on. "to what their sex lives were like." *falls out of my fucking chair*
Did anyone else think for a second that he was talking about the Borg from Star Trek instead of the Empire? Y’know, the whole dehumanizing, stripping of individuality to obey a single person (mind)?
Geetsly: “We’ve exhaustedly covered the daily lives of clone troopers on this channel before, from how they where made to how they spent their downtime to what their sex lives were like” “Hey threes, do you think masterbation is gay?”
Not gonna lie, makes me feel that when to rebels blew up the death stars 1 and 2, it was a mercy killing for a lot of the Stormtroopers on board, given that these rules pretty much made them non human.
Were people who were recruited into the stormtrooper corps ever promoted outside of it to staff positions or naval personnel with actual uniforms instead of armor? and if so, did they get their names and identities back? we see higher ranked people with names instead of numbers but what about the bucketheads?
Admiral Daala started out as a Stormtrooper recruit and was being groomed to be a commander, when some idiot decided to transfer her to the naval program which she was completely unsuited for.

I never got a sense of any of this from the movies. In A New Hope we see them just chit chatting and hanging out, seem like fairly normal dudes under the armour.
Nice video about the lives of Stormtroopers, Geetsly! I'm curious though, would you be open to the idea of making an specific video about Clone Ordnance Specialists? They're among the most obscure of clonetrooper types, so it would be nice to give them a shoutout if possible.
I read somewhere that storm troopers were based off the Nazi secret police. This further drives that home. Dehumanization of soldiers was the exact thing the Nazi regime was going for with their army. Same desired effect too.
That's actually wrong, German officers and regular soldiers were very independent and officers were encouraged to get to know their men by talking to them about themselves and so on. Not sure where you got that from dude
@@duckygaming3536 Yeah, it's sad to see people project assumptions onto history because of the pop-cultural tropes based upon said history. No offense to Zezous here but the German military was nothing like what you see in hollywood or video games. It's understandable though, they're media's favorite "villains" so of course people will project all their personal ideas and expectations of evil onto what basically amounted to ordinary men risking their lives for their families & Nation. Not some soulless mob of frenzied beasts.
It wasn't just Allied propaganda, it was Germany's propaganda. The goose stepping and snappy uniforms were parts of a carefully crafted image. Of course the German soldier wasn't constantly on parade. He drank, smoked, told jokes, sang songs, complained, and wrote letters home as soldiers have done for generations before and after. Dehumanization is for the enemy, not your buddies and beloved country.
Unfortunately, every time this ideological regime has been applied to combat troops, their unthinking adherence to doctrine makes it easy to counter because their responses to every new situation can be easily predicted.
