Lengger Lanang is an ancient drag queen tradition in Indonesia. After the communist crackdown in the 1960's, it disappeared. VICE follows a group for men who want to reawaken Lengger's drag roots.

Calling them drag is an understatement imho. Different than drag culture in the West, their performance isn't solely for entertainment but more related to spirituality and appeasing spirits. So they're more than just drag.

This is unesettling that this is going on in a Muslim nation. How can the people allow it? They should be in Banda Aceh and they would be punished. Sharia'h needs to be in ALL parts of Indoneisa.

it's very weird when you don't really need the subtitles! I'm from Indonesia but I have never heard of this part of our culture before, maybe because it's considered taboo and even though Indonesia is very diverse when it comes to culture, not a lot of people appreciate it. I'm glad I learned about this side of my country

I live in Banyumas btw and there are actually female lengger dancer as well, but if I'm not mistaken, in the past the female dancers always inflicted conflict among the men who watched them dance as they desired to date them, plus female dancers are stereotypical to prostitution hence the name is lengger (leng sing gawe geger, troublemaking hole--refers to female genitalia) so the reason why the lenggers are performed by men in drag is to minimize this kinda problem. Another similar traditional drag culture can be found in Eastern Javanese Ludruk (traditional theater performance, there are characters that played by men in drag called thandak ludruk), another traditional performance related to LGBT can be found in Gemblak and warok (also in East Java)

Joni Anarka tandhak is dominantly played by female
@RaevinLarue
@RaevinLarue 6 лет назад
Hey Joni, Your comment intrigued me, I am curious to understand more about the women in this equation. I find it troubling how women are regarded and discussed in this video. The is my first time hearing about this, and I acknowledge that my perspective is heavily inspired by a western narrative (Canadian I am) but I think that this cultural practice embedded in a spiritual legacy sort of hurts female empowerment and opportunity. With all that said, I would love to hear your take on this, perhaps I am being hyper critical?
@introvertdude842
@introvertdude842 6 лет назад
Raevin Larue today there are actually more female dancers than the men-in-drag version because cultural value evolves from seeing female lengger as a sexual object to just a dancer, a performer, an artist who reserves the cultural legacy. Seeing a lengger as an 'escort lady who dance' is probably no longer valid these days. However, men-in-drag lengger become a new phenomenon today because it is very rare already.
@RaevinLarue

Thank you for that insight. I really appreciate it. I am gonna look into this more.

i feel like referring to them as drag queens is a massive disservice to the spirituality of it all, especially the one who meditated and got a new gender, seems more akin to trans women than simply drag queens. this reminds me a lot of the Hijras as well
@morganolfursson2560
@morganolfursson2560 7 лет назад
Exactly
@BothHands1
@BothHands1 7 лет назад
But don't they live their lives as ordinary males, and only dress up to perform? They have wives and children, and act as the man of the house by their own words. Perhaps it's something in between, I don't know, but I don't think it's something to get too offended over. The only word that would accurately describe them, I guess, is Lengger, but not many people in the west (target audience) know what that means, so "drag queen" was used as an approximation.
@morganolfursson2560
@morganolfursson2560 7 лет назад
This is a terrible approximation and a VERY reductive one . They are closer to my opinion to the Japanese Onnagata from the Kabuki theater , ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-78H9pg_Ip9Y.html or the Otoko Geisha , the male Geisha ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6kd48DzyQ2c.html though the onnagata and Otoko Geisha have no spiritual dimension to their act , so the Lengger go even deeper than the Onnagata , or Male Geisha is their art . I am not too familiar with the Lengger and this is why i won't say too much here, but if you call an Onnagata a Drag Queen , you would be in trouble in Japan . Onnagata start at age 6 and it takes over 20 years to master the act , and then a life of complete dedication . Plus as you pointed it Danielle , Lengger , Onnagata or Otoko Geisha has nothing to do with sexuality , many are straight , some might be gay , some might be on a journey toward womanhood , but their act is not a transfiguration of their sexual orientation . Though i have never met a straight drag queen , and being gay myself , and often going to drag shows, i know many .

They aren't transgender they identify and live as males what the are is Lengger Lanang which are much closer drag queens the only problem with the term drag queen here is that it is a western concept associated with entertainment purposes while this has a spiritual quality to it's performance.

What an interesting story and cultural tradition in Java. It's really sad when conservatives try to narrow the scope of what is permissible culturally. It's also so sad to see an Arab ultra-conservative brand of Islam sweeping across Indonesia and Malaysia. Indonesia has always had such a beautiful and UNIQUE cultural tradition and heritage that predates the arrival of Islam. I hope these beautiful Javanese dance traditions and spirituality by these dancers never die out. It seems like Bali and just a few areas in Indonesia are keeping their pre-Islamic Hindu-Buddhist traditions alive.

i would not say drag but a part of tradition to them. this type of similar culture can also be seen in some part of my country Nepal. the Magar community of my country celebrates there ritual with mens dressing into womens traditional outfit and dancing to the traditional music along with a song without any lyrics but humming sound.this tradition has passed down to centuries and is still freshly delivers all rituals without any lost history.this dance is called"Maruni" and is performed in special events like festivals death ceremony or marriage. people also believe that during this ritual performance the humming sound of song can bring god into any pure soul body (same magar community)of the person listening to the song. #NEPAL

Maybe not everyone's an outgoing fairy?? She has every right to do what she does or doesn't want to do, you know nothing about what went on behind the screen god damn get a life reporters report, they bring a story, they aren't there to dance for the camera.

She wasn't being disrespectful by refusing to dance. She knows her limits. Plus, she did try.

She kept talking about how big her head was and how bad of a dancer she is. Obviously, she is a very anxious and insecure person. She doesn't deserve to be castigated for refusing to do something that makes her uncomfortable.

I feel like it’s a mistake to call them drag, in the west “drag” has no deeper meaning, it’s just entertainment, often sexual But this performance is spiritual and has significant meaning to them, it’s not materialistic like in the west.
