I admire people that put out these quality information videos for free. It's people like you that keep the beautiful spirit of sharing alive on the internet for everybody to enjoy. Keep it up.
Richard Smitheman has taught me about anatomy more than my 3 years of learning biology , thank you sir hope to see more videos on anatomy those are super helpfull
I feel like I've learned more about drawing the figure from your videos than I did through four years of art school. I love your focus on really understanding musculature (my sketchbook is looking like an anatomy notebook). It makes everything click perfectly. I hope you come out with more videos but like others have said, I would absolutely support your Patreon if you were to set one up. If you no longer make videos, I'll keep coming back to the ones you have anyway - they have given me a fantastic foundation to build on. Thank you!
I too had an "ah ha..." moment. It all clicked. If you can picture the skeleton and the muscles, then the figure almost takes shape for you... It's really beautiful.
Sir, you should try to open a store on amazon and link the supplies you use on here that way when people click on the link here to get to the supplies on amazon and purchasing it, you will get a small payment for that. Kinda help support your channel as well. Just an idea. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this video. I would support your Patreon if you ever created one. Will you be making more real-time videos of anatomy study? I’ve learned a lot and you made it so simple to understand. Thank you
Please come back to youtube Mr. Richard, i really miss you and your videos, they have helped me A LOT, but i hope you are safe, happy and is in healthy condition.
I draw as a hobby. It's been four months now. I don't have much knowledge because i haven't learned it properly. I have drawn buildings so far, but I'm going to study and draw a person while watching your videos. Thank you for good informations👍😁
Thank you!!! Ive always hated figure drawing and honestly blocking in general, but ive been really limited not getting into it more, i think. Your instructions are the first time it's actually clicked
I attended School in the 70s and I agree with you completely about newsprint, however mine were stored for decades where the sun did not shine and perhaps they were made with different ingredients, but they yellowed. Very delicate.
Very nice channel. Also makes me think to use the newsprint's yellowing as a medium, nothing wrong with that tint and can be quite beautiful in its own right. It does feel lovely as the charcoal glides across.
Thank you very much for this great informative video. Please keep it Up. Hopefully some long detailed figure drawing sessions; or even object drawings, would be greatly appreciated. Also the lighting in the scene and on the paper is great and everything is clearly visible. (unlike may other youtubers)
Sir thank you for the sessions. Please make more of such videos🙏 I m glad that youtube suggested me your channel. The concepts and the way you teach is pure GOLD. Sir please make videos on how beginners like me can practice daily. I feel that I have the potential to learn but don't know where to get help from. Whenever I search for basic anatomy videos in yt, they are not to the point. I hope you see my comment.
Can you please teach face sketching!!!!!... My initial art style of my comic was realistic + comic style... which I was proud of!! and I love jim lee's style and dynamic enough poses (some artist excaudate pose to much) ... but for my own style I wanted more realistic style, more solid. Very recently my style has change.. it some too comic booky... I want my early style back.. so I came here...... even if the rendering (cross hatching and inking) is rough it looks very beautiful and real.... Can you also make tutorials on male poses and male anatomy and face sketches? Please
Hello sir, quick question: do you think I can properly learn figure drawing using a graphic tablet instead of pen & paper? Does the medium one uses affect the learning process? Thank you.
@@JoseTlaseca Hope you guys don't mind the crowd weighing in, my experience would say "In most ways yes you can, it shouldn't interfere. But in other ways, yes it does affect." - The core principles will remain the same, regardless of the fact that you will learn to achieve them by controlling your chosen medium. But-- you will learn to achieve them by learning to control your chosen medium. So they will look like that medium, you will get used to that medium, and any medium does influence style and technique. Which is not a bad thing, just unique. There will be similarities and differences, but depending on how you set up your tablet/app/brushes, you can increase the similarities. For instance, I put a lovely screen protector on my iPad called "Paperlike." It's pretty cool, worth googling. - To summarize, "Yes, you can learn. It shouldn't interfere, but it will affect." Try to make your app setup as simple as possible to reduce distractions, to learn the basics first, then branch out with other apps/settings/features. Lastly, why not grab any cheap pencil/pen/marking tool and blank paper you can get your hands on, and practice using both those and your tablet? Feels nice to go back and forth.
I think @jazzlehazzle summed it up perfectly. I would like to add, I work on a cintiq for a living and yet the sheer expressiveness and subtlety of a medium like charcoal is hard to beat. It's the reason I keep coming back to it. Regardless of which medium you choose, enjoy the journey!
Thanks for sharing this video! I was wondering what you place your board on that keeps it sturdy and in place, it looks as though it’s not resting on your knees? Thanks again!
Very helpful, thank you! Does it matter if you get the newsprint in the pad vs in a ream? I notice there's a big price difference, but does the quality differ?
Hi Richard ! I just discovered your channel and your videos! It is really super helpful! I want to really try and invest in your approach and see if I can progress further with my figure drawing. Can you share what exact newsprint paper you use and where we might buy it? I am in France and it seems it is not so easy to find these kind of paper in large formats. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience !
my kneaded erasers have been neglected for a few years old and seem hardened, will they get better with more use, or should I buy a new one? thanks for the videos by the way! it's helping me gain the confidence to take art classes in college (for context I've been drawing since middle school but all in little sketchbooks with a mechanical pencil- I think part of me knew I was hitting a ceiling but blamed it on my own ability to improve and not the quality of my materials lol)
They do? I’ve not heard of it, I’ll have to check that out. If it really is acid free then it would certainly be more archival I would imagine. Thanks for the heads up!
@@RichardSmithemanArt thanks for the response . Yes Hobby lobby has a brand of acid free newsprint paper. My first time using it so I’ll see how well it holds up .
I also recently purchased a white charcoal pencil, but I find it doesn’t lay well over black. Perhaps my paper is too toothy? I also have an erasure pencil, but again, it doesn’t seem to work as well as the kneaded erasure. Am I not using it properly?
Without knowing what and how you are using these together it's impossible to give a meaningful answer. But, finding what does and doesn't work for you is all part of the process and might change as your process and skill develops. Havig said all that I would say that if you're working on white paper I'd resist the temptation to use the white charcoal pencil. Let the white of the paper do the work!
Do you prefer using the Generals 6B (extra soft) or the 4B (soft)? I like the darker range I can get with the 6B, but I've found them to be quite brittle to work with, especially when trying to sharpen and hold a long taper on the pencil. Curious what you think as someone that has used them for a while.
I generally work with 6B's, 4's on occasion. Thing is, they tend to vary, 6B's that feel like 4B's and vice versa. I like the range of the 6B's. Also I like a taper of about 1 inch, so they tend hold together pretty well, for the most part!
@@RichardSmithemanArt Thanks for the reply! I'll play around with the 6B's some more, I may have gotten a particularly brittle box. I've also heard very good things about Marie's charcoal pencils, if that might be of interest to you.
Good info, clear and well organized. Try not to use the word “SO” as often as you do. It’s an over used word by many teachers and RU-vid presenter’s. Thanks again for the lesson.
1. Es en automatico en youtube 2. Si no entiendes al 100% lo que dicen, el leerlo ayuda mucho. 3. Si seria bueno que lo subtitularan en otros idiomas, pero supongo que cuesta.
