@@adinigel I would agree at most merge in turn situations. If the guy's insisting on being pushy save yourself the hassle. But I let a lopsided haircut in a white SUV push in front of me in a drivethrough a few years ago and the expected happened. As she was out of order in line, they let her pay for my food and then tried to charge me £25 for her order to feed all of her kids. I explained she'd pushed in front and mine was the £7 order but as she'd already paid it took ages and a manager to sort it out. I used to work at a McDonald's and can confirm that whoever completes their order first should in theory be the next in line in terms of car order. That being said, the system normally takes a picture of the driver as well, so that the staff can choose the correct order if the cars haven't merged in the same way. With the above in mind, I think I would have held back here and let the van driver skip ahead. To me, they'd already closed that space down and was giving the impression that they were going to push forwards with no thought of anyone else. I've no argument for the way he dealt with the cammer afterwards, but I don't think it was worth getting into that situation in the first place. Glad to see he saw his day in court though.

I think the argument of "I completed my order first" is meaningless as other commenters have already stated. They will usually confirm your order at the next window or they will have some system that will inform them of which order was yours. I tend to take the approach you've always taught us, Ashely. Priority is given, not taken. In these situations I will do as the DCer did and show my intention of taking point, but if the other driver wants to be in front then I'll let them go; very much either an "after you" or "if you insist, thank you" type situation for me tbh. I also like to think by letting them go in front I'm more likely to get a hotter/fresher serve of chips :P Obviously at the end of the day the van driver is a knob and deserves what he got in the end, but we must always think about how we could have made the situation better.

Former McDonalds Window 1 Expert here, the till in the window does show the orders in order of which order began first (when the first button was pressed on the till). The speaker boxes also have a stealthy camera in that takes a picture when the first button is pressed on the till to help Window 1 work out whose order is whose. I'd agree that if you finish ordering first then you would naturally be next in the queue but I doubt the van driver was waiting so long because of it being a big order, but more likely was waiting for the person to answer and take his order. Ultimately, it doesn't matter and isn't worth damaging your car as when you get to the collection window if your order isn't ready but the vehicle behind's is, you'll be asked to park up and wait anyway. I'd guess the van driver was simply frustrated as the queue was taking a long time. I like to think I'm nice and calm behind the wheel but when I was recently stuck in a Drive thru for 30 minutes on the way to pick up someone from an airport - I felt myself beginning to see red.

Keep an eye out for those that I call a Starbucks driver, the ones that concentrate on not spilling their drink / foodrather than focussing on driving. They are worse at drive thru places. I have seen some creeping along at idle revs while in gear but still putting sugar in their coffee, those that will be handing out food while chuntering along at 25mph on a dual carriageway and my personal favourite is those that have fully turned around to put / get something from the back seat while either merging onto the road or approaching you from behind while you are stationary at traffic lights One of the many reasons I dislike drive thru as it becomes, along with everything else, rush rush rush. If going inside you can take time to sugar the coffee, you can hand out the food while stationary in the car park, you can put things or get things from the back seat before setting off

The van took up a "I'm going in front of you" position. At this point, the "don't f*ck with a truck" rule applies. Hang back and don't increase risk.

I think the van driver would have been even more pissed of if McDonalds had given him the plant burger and veggie meal 😂

If you're wondering, they take a picture of you when you order. The person taking payment has a screen of pictures, they click the one that matches the car. (This also means like, they can see whats going on in your car so dont do anything questionable. I saw some weird things during my university job at McDonalds)... Normally this will be in the order the orders were taken, but, sometimes the order can be wrong (often there will be 2 order takers on headset, one may forget to click the CASH OUT button so the order may not get sent to the payment taker, hence incorrect order numbers. But its very easily fixed as the person taking payment can just confirm the photo, and everything is fine. It doesnt really matter what order the cars come, you could let 5 cars past and theyd be fine.

What a plank that van driver is, I've always taken it that if you complete your order first you go first and 99% of drivers understand that, but as they saying goes " There is always one"

I agree with the little move to say "I'm next", but in order to be defensive, I would have let the van in as soon as it became clear they were not backing down.

Let's be honest. The biggest tragedy here is the order. A McPlant meal and water. 😅

McDonald's uses an ANPR system so it doesn't matter who finishes the order first, when you get to the payment window and it becomes a single queue everyone is in the correct order.

It'll cost many thousands to sort out two dented doors, a boot, and a rear bumper though. £200 in compensation won't cover that. The punishment is basically a minor slap on the wrist. Unbelievable. And all over a perceived "queue jump". I dread to think what this maniac does in his normal day to day driving if something like this triggers him.

I'm no lawyer, but he'll probably have to sue him through civil court, or go through small claims court to get that. Since the guy was charged criminally and plead guilty, it should hopefully be a doddle.

I'd move with the que whilst trying to make eye contact with van driver on the left and judge based on their movement. Since van driver wasn't slowing down I'd have just waited. But I'd hope they don't swap the order over 🤣 I'd be more upset getting the wrong food than losing a place in the que

The worst thing about this is that he ordered a McPlant.

I've had this situation on more than one occasion, as I tend to order on the app and nearly always get through quicker... if they want to go first, I let them get on with it....
