Christopher Bates is an experienced practitioner of the martial arts with an extensive background in both Burmese and Chinese systems. He was a direct disciple of Master Hong Yixiang in Taiwan since 1982 and is currently studying under Master Hong Zehan, who is the son of Hong Yixiang.

This is very interesting and he's clearly had a front row seat to some very interesting people. Nevertheless, at the end of the day the proof is in the pudding. I haven't seen Mr. Bates move, but when you watch many of the students (especially foreign ones) they don't move particularly smoothly and are fairly stiff and it's this stiffness that, in my opinion, points towards a problem. Perhaps some these people can really fight and have power but it's not really coming from the Dantian. Of course there's an opposite problem as well of people who are too loose and have very little structure. Everyone thinks that their teacher taught them the "real" stuff and in some instances that's true. However, (especially with Chinese martial arts) there is still a very strong sense of "us" vs "them and the clan mentality still exists in Chinese culture. Perhaps not as strong as it used to be, but it's still there.
