Kind Edward VIII, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Windsor, or simply David, as he preferred to be called by family and friends throughout his lifetime, The Duke was a man who abhorred the conventions and ceremonial trappings associated with royalty, but took full advantage of his privileged life to become one of the most celebrated playboys of all time.
Never one to feel compelled to conform, in 1936, only 11-months after becoming King, he shocked the world when he walked away from the most prestigious monarchy on the planet in order to marry Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee that he had become infatuated with and would spend the remainder of his life with.
Aside from the tribulations of his romantic life, the Duke was a man who enjoyed and deeply valued being stylish in his life. He was a remarkably snappy dressed and set men free from the conventional and very staid standards of formal and casual dress that existed during his period of sartorial existence.
In this video we explore the Duke of Windsor's remarkable story and focus upon the style tips that he has left us as a legacy of his boldness as a dresser.

A good exemplar of how an apparent "gentleman" can be a weakling, a fool and even a fascist sympathiser. A true gentleman does not indulge in multiple affairs or put pleasure before duty. Style is nothing without substance; he was a vain, frivolous poppinjay. None of this is intended as a critique of your commentary or your videos, all of which are highly informative and much appreciated. All goes to show that a so called "commoner" can often be more of a gentleman than Royalty.

Recently picked up a pair of (very) green Turnbull & Asser Italian made moleskin trousers... they are superb quality. I have taken the leg width in a little, but require the services of a lady down the road to adjust the seat to suit me.... wish me luck ;)... I can see them looking excellent with the right loafers and a cream camp collar shirt with day cravat.

Dear Ash, a question if I may. Given that you are a former serviceman, also with family members from the military- what do you think about the fact we take so many cues from a person with such sympathies for the Axis? I don't intend to set a cat amongst the pigeons, but this is an issue I've always pondered on and I would very much appreciate your views on the topic. As ever, many thanks.

The Duke had some very strange sensibilities and undoubtedly his abdication was a fortunate act of destiny for the continuance of the monarchy. A good argument against the system of hereditary monarchy indeed. I have added your question to a Q & A video I will be filming over the weekend for a future airing on my channel. I feel like this subject deserves more than just a few lines here. Keep an eye out for that one!

I very much believe the cravat is cool from films like Edward Fox in 'The Day of the Jackal' and Pierce Brosnan in 'Golden Eye', I also appreciate how Daniel Craig in 'Skyfall' gave us a modern take, almost like a introductional way to wear cravat by using a cut down earth-tone wool scarf to get that cravat look without the bulk of a full scarf stuffed down your jumper.

The Duke of Windsor was a great style setter. His politics, however, were abhorrent. Quite cozy with the Nazis. Some recent historians have suggested that he was made Governor of Bermuda to make sure he did not somehow wind up in England during the war. There was enough evidence that they would have had to put him on trial for treason, and they did not want to do that. But, where would we be without the Windsor knot for ties?

Despite his suspect political views and the choice of "Simping" for broads who were way beneath his station and class, the former King Edward VIII, later to become the Duke of Windsor, is still considered by many to be a Men's Classic Style Phenomenon, even by today's standards! Even according to Men Style expert's like G. Bruce Boyer, "As Prince of Wales, he had been the brightest of the Bright Young Things". As a younger Man he had popularized many Classic Style elements still used today. Even "Mr. Elegance" himself, Fred Astaire, 🕺paid a compliment to the Dukes style, by copying items in his Wardrobe on several occasions, again according to G. Bruce Boyer. Also a lot of credit must also be given to the Duke's tailor, Frederick Scholte, who's genius in tailoring created the modern "Drape", which is still used in Men's suits today.👞👔 You can say what you want about the Duke, but you can't deny the fact that, that Man had style!✌
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
I agree, he has had a lot of bad press around his choice of partner and his political affiliations, but whatever you say, he changed the way that men dress all over the world and brought modernity and panache to men's wardrobes. Worthy of some praise in my mind!

He was a dreadful man who lead a life of unbelievable privilege, an Icon. He is to be despised not lauded as a stylish gentleman. A friend of the Nazis, do you think they looked like dapper chaps in their Hugo Boss designed uniforms?
@samg1879
@samg1879 3 года назад
Definitely, the Nazis were undeniably dapper, and still regarded as such, that was one of the main purposes of their uniforms. Plenty of mainstream videos on it. But I don't think anyone has ever said that you should aspire to the personal views of the Nazis, and I think we're all aware of their atrocities. Although you probably wouldn't be able to get away with wearing military gear out in public, they did look bloody good, which again is purposely done. I'd refrain from wearing any sort of Totenkopf lapel pins though!

Hindsight is very 20/20. In the 1930s it wasn't as black and white to see who was going to be light and who was going to be dark in WW2. The previous war (and all previous wars that people alive could have referenced) saw simply enemy combatants going at it. One side won and one side lost. A lot of the info about the really dark stuff about what the Nazis were doing - especially in the later stages of the war - was just not so immediately and widely available to the public, and came out later as things were discovered. Information was nowhere near as widely available then as it is now, even to a Duke. That's right, even to a Duke.
