Will the Durston X-Mid 1 dethrone my beloved Tarptent Scarp 1 tent? In this video I do an initial garden pitch review then take it out for a proper mountain backpacking trip and share my thoughts on this popular ultralight backpacking tent.
Total cost to me, including non Sterling fee and import duty: £308 (June 2023).
Durston X-Mid 1 Features and specs:
Features
• Ultra-simple pitch with just four stakes
• Tent pitches fly first, so the inner tent stays dry during setup in the rain.
• The twin pole structure provides generous headroom and living space.
• Double-wall design protects from condensation.
• Dual doors and dual vestibules provide easy access and ample gear space.
• Protected doorways can be left open in light rain.
• Doorways are large and not blocked by trekking poles like many designs.
• Polyester fabric does not sag in the rain.
• Polyester fabric does not absorb water, so it is fast dry and stays light.
• Interior peak pockets provides handy storage.
• Large vents provide excellent ventilation and close easily during harsh conditions.
• Excellent snow shedding via steep roof panels
• Full coverage fly extends to the ground to block drafts yet can be raised for more ventilation.
• Packs short enough to store horizontally in a pack
• Fly and inner can pitch independently
• Magnetic door toggles for quick operation
• Vestibules can be collapsed to fit into smaller tent sites
• Fully waterproof seams (seam taped or waterproof construction)
• Fully double-stitched construction
• Non-slippery floor
• Premium materials and hardware (e.g., YKK AquaGuard Zippers)
• Optional peak guylines and side panel guylines plus 8 optional stake points around the base for harsh conditions
Weight

Thanks for checking out the X-Mid and glad you're liking the tent. For the pitch, I just finished a new pitching video today that I think is a lot more helpful and will have good tips on getting it square and how to quickly fix it if it's not. I should have that posted early next week. - Dan

Definitely no negatives so far. My trip to the WHW was in June '11...flew out from the US and met up with a friend in England...we were total noobs, basically pre-youtube so we had very little info going in with roughly 27kg worth of stuff in my pack...most of it was useless. Had a gash in one of my flat feet that took a year to heal with the help of a foot doctor. I've learned a lot since then! nice vid, reading other comments, yer, its v similair to the notch, I like that the poles are diagonal , as someone who is 6'3 me fitting in tents,especially regards headroom is always a PITA for me,Im actually considering the 2 man solid inner version as a bigger tent rather than to replace the notch, and as the 2 man is a shade over a kilo, easy choice
@WalkWithWallace

@WalkWithWallace
@WalkWithWallace Год назад
Cheers Mark. It's a cracking little backpacking tent, I know what you mean about the wind buffeting the high sides though, with the poles offset and the guylines pulling against each other, it does quite well. Wouldn't want to push it much beyond 30mph.

Hey Jack, the X-Mid is still pretty new to me but I personally wouldn’t hesitate to take it on the CWT, it’s a capable tent. As for the Flex Capicitor, it’s okay but I’ve never really found any pack that truly works.

@WalkWithWallace Год назад
Yeah, I possibly could have moved the tent slightly, wasn't a big pitch with the uneven terrain.
@BrokenBackMountains
@BrokenBackMountains Год назад
Aye, tussocky highland Moor can make the pitch a bit awry. Have had the inner close to the fly when pitching all in all be so now I pitch fly first and hang the inner -makrs it easier to adjust. Mine is the 2 man solid and has seen rain and midge and wind and has been good. I replace the corner guys with longer tie outs and put bungee on the middle peg points. I had the inner door ties set up with a loop and line lock like the v1 xmid but am going to change it to those wee magnet dials on the ties. It has replaced about 3 tents now and I repurposed some poles so I can take it in the car or on the bike without trekking poles. My only regret was the customs fees😢

I haven't been treated to rain in my Durston yet, so I'm glad to see it looks built for the Scottish weather. I used it in Glencoe a few days ago, between Fraochaidh and Sgorr a' Choise, in a sea of heather clumps. No chance of getting the rectangle straight, but my Thermarest smoothed things out and I had a great night's sleep. The floor of the tent seems to have survived intact and I used a car frost windshield under the thermarest.

It's big enough to protect the whole of the tent floor as well as covering one of the vestibules which means I can do away with the foam entrance mat. They also make a smaller one for 1 man tents 😎 Good to see you out and about again, hope the back and hip are OK now

I'm in the same boat being both a scarp 1 and a Durston mid 1p owner. Currently doing the W.H.W and have opted for the lighter xmid but will probably stick to the scarp 1 for higher, windier adventures. BTW - the linelocs might not actually be the wrong way. Sometimes they twist over each other in the plastic receiver / box / loc thing, partic' if the hooped end of the line is extended leaving only 🎉a little of the line on the other side of the 'loc'. Look closely and pull the short end and twist it back.... If any of that actually made any sense, you must be telepathic. 🎉

I’ve had an Xmid 2 since they first came out a little before the initial hysteria. I think they’re a great weight to volume tent, massive porches. I have to say though as you elude to in your video If you don’t get your rectangle right it does affect the overall pitch quite a lot. Whilst this isn’t that difficult to do on a nice sunny day on your flat lawn. in reality on an uneven, tussocky windy hillside it’s not that easy. (Or for me it isn’t) I was out at the weekend and used my Xmid. I have to admit to making the wrong tent selection. It Was forecast 30mph winds. For me this tent (Xmid 2) isn’t the tent for such occasions. The large panels are like sails and I had difficulty keeping pegs in. Also managed to rip it as the tent was moving so much I got up to a pierced fly sheet where the pole tip had managed to get moved out of the grommet, still think it’s a great tent but for me keep its for fair weather when you want something light. It’s major competitor is the stratosphire and if weather resistance is higher on your agenda I’d choose the strat over the Xmid personally. I have a scarp also and I think they have different usages obviously with some overlap.

Sorry to hear about the damage, hopefully it's not too bad. My friend managed to do that with his Tarptent Stratosphere, preferred my Trailstar, where the handle end went into the roof, rather than the point. I've also discovered, the more you fiddle with it, the worse it gets too, so the taut rectangle shape is imperative. This was filmed at the weekend, we found shelter at the summit but knew the winds were to increase to 30mph, so dropped into the Glen.

@@WalkWithWallacewee Annie is short haired as well. Might get a great carpet. Thanks. Re: the tent. Would the mesh inner be colder than a solid inner? I’m struggling to get warm in winter and I was thinking of modifying my mesh inner by stitching in a piece of shower curtain material. Apart from wind getting in. Do you think it makes much difference?
@WalkWithWallace
@WalkWithWallace Год назад
A full mesh is definitely colder, you'll feel drafts if it's windy. Is your mat up to the task? If there's no insulation in that, you're probably going to feel the cold even in the summer months.

@@WalkWithWallace cheers. I live in Spain and the taxes and import duty are just too much. They should have a European stockist, they'd absolutely clean up. Really love the xmid pro. Although I've heard the patent on that material expires in 2024 so tents made from that may become much cheaper. Fingers crossed. Enjoy your tent, looks ace
