The first double stop he is showing us is really an E chord in the simple D chord shape moved to the fourth fret. If you learn the various chord shapes and move them around the fret board, you can expand your soloing ability.

When I figured out the opening part of the 'I Love A Rainy Night' solo was when I really started using this technique more. It opens with a great example of this type of playing where he starts with the bass root note of his scale, and runs it all the way up the neck. I don't even remember what key it's in now, but I figured I could just go "Plus 2 frets two times' from my root note, then jump it up to the next string, sometimes hitting two strings together to make it feel more full/different. But the lead part of that Eddie Money classic really helped me get this technique on lock. Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam also makes nice use of some of those double stops, and is a pretty easy way to grasp it.

Im one of the guys that's had a guitar 20 years. I watch lots of RU-vid guitar videos. I try it get lost then put the guitar down after 5 mins cos my brain just won't let me progress. I literally tried what you just taught me and it has opened up a whole new understanding for me. I'm actually going all over the frets now which I've never been able too. Awesomeeeeee. And guess what? I'm Scottish also 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Just a comment hopefully to help. I teach and I think that if you just explained what a"shape" is and maybe a bit more about how changing the fret location ie: 7th fret and so on, I find that the student relates better. I usually use the A shape and show how that by moving it changes the key. Just my preference but I think it gives the student a wider understanding of the chord changes and their relationship with a chord structure for a song but good on you with your lesson. 😅

How's it going Tony? Nice little ditty. I see you have a Fender amplifier on the floor. Is it an older model? I have a Fender Mustang 25 watt, that's alright for a modeler but out of 50 presets I only use a couple. I bought a little 5watt tube amplifier from Monoprice that's good for apartment playing.
