Take an in-depth look at one of the most loved and biggest-selling US bands of all time. With rare footage of their best live performances and interviews with critics and musicologists. Includes performances and music clips of; Hotel California, Saturday Night, Tequila Sunrise, Take It To The Limit, Lyin' Eyes and more.
The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971. With five number-one singles and six number-one albums, six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America. Founding members Glenn Frey (guitars, vocals), Don Henley (drums, vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitars, vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass guitar, vocals) were recruited by Linda Ronstadt as band members, some touring with her, and all playing on her third solo album, before venturing out on their own on David Geffen's new Asylum Records label.
Their debut album, Eagles (1972), spawned two top-20 singles in the US and Canada: "Take It Easy" and "Witchy Woman". The next year's follow-up album, Desperado, peaked at only number 41 in the US, although the song "Desperado" became a popular track. In 1974, guitarist Don Felder joined, and On the Border produced the top-40 hit "Already Gone" and the Eagles' first number-one song in the US and Canada, "Best of My Love", which made the top 15 in Australia, their first hit overseas. In 1975, the album One of These Nights became their first number-one album in the US and a top-10 album in many countries. It included the US number-one hit "One of These Nights", which was their first top-10 hit outside of North America, and US top-five songs "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It to the Limit". Also in 1975, guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh replaced Leadon.
Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) (1976) is the best-selling album in the United States, with 38 million sold, and primed the public for the late 1976 release of Hotel California, which would sell more than 26 million copies in the US (ranking third all-time for US sales), and more than 32 million copies worldwide. The album yielded two number-one singles in the US and Canada, "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California", the latter of which became their only top-10 hit in the United Kingdom, while also reaching the top 10 in New Zealand and many European countries, including number two in France.
influenced by 1960s rhythm and blues, soul, bluegrass, and rock bands such as the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, the Eagles' overall sound has been described as "California rock". In the words of Sal Manna, author of the CD liner notes of the band's 1994 album Hell Freezes Over, "no one knew quite what 'California rock' meant - except perhaps that, because in California anything was possible, music that came from that promising land was more free-spirited and free-ranging."
On their early records, the group combined rock and roll, country, and folk music styles. For their third album On the Border, the band widened their style to include a prominent hard rock sound, a genre the band had only touched upon previously. The 1975 follow-up album One of These Nights saw the group explore a softer sound, notably exemplified on the hit singles "Take It to the Limit", and "Lyin' Eyes". Leadon, who was the principal country influence, left the band after the album was released, and the band moved away from country rock to a more rock direction in Hotel California. The band's 2007 comeback album Long Road Out of Eden saw them explore country rock, blues rock, and funk.

21:29 it’s unreal that they let Felder go. He gave the band so much of its iconic sound with the steel guitar and just his play style. The wouldn’t be anything without him especially since he was the one who came up with Hotel California which they have been milking every drop out of since it came out (rightfully so)

Interesting that Don Felder’s presence (and departure) was pretty much discounted. He penned the music for their most successful song of all time. In my opinion, his contributions and pairing with Joe Walsh was invaluable to the bands development in their formative years. He deserved better treatment than he received.

English nobodies giving opinions without proper research. As others are saying they can’t even pronounce their names right. Bob Seger’s band not the folksy protest Pete Seger ! Friends from their days back in Detroit Bob slightly older was kind of an early mentor and life long mate to Glen and the Eagles. Here’s a little gem of information I heard Bob give on some obscure radio show once. The song “The Last Resort” ( kind of environmental before it became a thing) that Glen once described as Don Henley’s opus had Bob praising Glen Frey. He said the musical arrangement behind it was all Glen’s input. Listening to it with the full orchestral backing is epic and why the combined talents of Frey and Henley were so successful. Still filling stadiums over five decades.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey 1985 when Glenn was opening for Tina Turner and Joe was opening for Foreigner, met Glen in Worcester Mass a Marriott Hotel became very good friends, he was a very decent good man and treated me ( a fan) as if I was a brother of his, we spent a few weeks together touring with Tina Turner and stayed Friends for several years, he invited myself and my family to his shows in Florida & elsewhere, Glenn Frey was the real thing, love that man! He trusted me with a lot of things that happened with the eagles and why The Break-Up and so on, I felt very privileged and I also know more than any fan or anybody outside the band, I was blessed to hear "when hell freezes over" the Eagles will get back together, I heard it first in August of 85, subsequently they got back together and named their tour "when hell freezes over" boy did I get a laugh out of that how ironic that they would go back on tour and name the tour just that! Well the truth was " and Glenn new it" that Joe Walsh to me to ask when if the Eagles would ever get back together again, and Glenn Frey's response was "when hell freezes over" Joe wasn't too happy about that! Oh well just a tidbit I had a great time with my idols, I was at the Sun Dome in Tampa when Joe and Glenn got together and did a show together, that was big that I knew they were going to tour again! I'm so glad they settled their differences, the world was happy to see that tour! Love you Glenn, love you Joe!

I was around from the earliest days with Linda (which was Glenn, Don, Casey van Beek on bass, and Ken Bloom on guitar and fiddle), then Casey and Ken left Linda's band and Bernie and Randy joined Linda's band. I gotta say after reading Don Felder's book I'm really soured on Henley and Frey. The reunion was a money generator for them but produced absolutely nothing of note, aside from some of Felder's amazing guitar work. Nothing authentic or beautiful. Just a stream of wreckage and jettisoned members left behind by the "gods". One of These Nights was their artistic peak. Hotel California had one really good song on it, and after that it was over.
