La Verdadera Destreza is a system that is usually associated with the 17th Century and the works of such masters as Pacheco, Ettenhard or Rada. But the coiner of “Verdadera Destreza” as a term was Jerónimo Sánchez de Carranza, who published his magnum opus On the Philosophy of Arms and their Destreza and Christian Defence and Aggression in 1569, and he was already a practitioner of the fencing arts in the middle of the 16th century. In this workshop we will examine some of the concepts of this Early Destreza, in which the famous cup hilt rapiers of the 17th century were not invented yet, but the central tenets of the theory were already in place. This theoretical system can be used to understand fencing from any different schools, and examine their propositions to assess their “true” or “defence-based” value.
About the instructor: Lorenzo started out in historical fencing in 2011 in Madrid as a student of the Escuela Madrileña de Esgrima Histórica, where he learnt to use the rapier following the Verdadera Destreza style. He also practised intensely with the longsword and with sword and buckler at the same school. In 2015 he moved to Warsaw and, not finding any rapier school in the city, became an instructor at the ARMA-PL fencing school. He has been teaching there since then. He maintains a broad interest in Destreza as applied to different contexts, against different schools. Being an instructor for fencers with little knowledge of rapier (much less Verdadera Destreza) has allowed (or forced, depending on the view) to rely on sources which, as a native Spanish and Italian speaker, he’s lucky enough to read in the original form. He travels extensively, and has been doing workshops in Poland and abroad. He does not care much for tournaments, but he competes occasionally. In 2022 he won three silvers, in the Valkyrie tournament in Wrocław and in the Torneo di Spada 2022 in Potsdam (single sword, and sword and buckler).
In historical fencing or HEMA (for Historical European Martial Arts) we reconstruct sword fighting systems from historical sources. Our club focuses on Italian medieval and renaissance sources, fencing with the Spadone (Two-Handed Sword), Spear, Sidesword (One-Handed Sword) together with Shield, Cape, Dagger, you name it!

Very helpful to a novice. Unlike a live class, I was able to pause and rewind at will to get a greater understanding of what Lorezzo was trying to get across. I hope you consider doing a follow up, or even a whole series on destreza.

Upon joining the Tercio de Hibernia and Terdio de Ultonia, my ancestors had to train in Destreza Verdadera. Since they served in cavalry, there was that additional training, including firearms. Combined with their knowledge of traditional Irish Gaelic armed and unarmed combatives, they truly were noted as a force to be reckoned with. I will check out the site. Thank you for doing what you do.

You say early Destreza but what sources is Lorenzo drawing from. It can't be Carranza because both from what I have read which is the stuff available in English and what others have said Carranza is incredibly light on actual details on how to perform the techniques and is more focused on the underlying philosophy of the true school. It would be like trying to learn kenjutsu from the book of five rings. So when it comes to details on shoulder positioning, details on stepping, details on measure, details on striking and techniques to use when you are in the bind and bringing all that together in a holistic method you have to go elsewhere. Thus, where is Lorenzo drawing these details from? P.S The only person I know of that learned fencing before Pacheco and published his work without Pacheco's influence while being influenced deeply by Carranza's ideas is Thibault and it is quite clear how differently Thibault interpreted the philosophy of Carranza. P.S.S Also wonderful workshop Lorenzo takes are original and are valuable to getting a clear picture on what the steps should look like. This is the kind of video you watch thrice.

You certainly are well read in this subject matter. My hat's off to you. Among others he could cite are Pacheco's teacher Hieronimo de Carança, died c. 1608. Carranza and Caranca are acknowledged as fundamentally the known historical theorists. Later instructors fully developed the strategies and tactics, and benefitted from further developments in sword hilt technology, e.g. the cup hilt, and changes in the blade and grip itself transitional rapiers, spadroons, colichimardes, true small swords and variants, then sabers and cutlasses.

I'm sure you know the rapier was almost useless against cavalry wearing any armor whatsoever? And was seldom used on horseback, regardless, no matter what we see in the cinema. It was also nearly useless against heavy infantry, who generally wore various configurations of armor, and used heavier broadswords, e.g. backswords, that could separate the rapier hilt from the tang in one impact, or smash the digits gripping the sword in a forward position, even when striking?

Destreza is not Spanish??? So who analized those movements and took them into practice?? The Spaniards. As well as Arquimedes found universal principles that anyone could reach. But, at the end was Arquimedes itself who did it.

You should wear a microphone.

He does ;-) But if you teach a gym full of people mixed with individual instruction it's kinda impossible to get a good sound balance without someone just permanently monitoring it.

And the reflections you hear are the reverberations of the room. To get closer to podcast style audio would require a heck of lot of Rockwool sound dampening panels :)
