Before Roy and Tony O, Glenn Hall integrated the butterfly technique 👍Thank you for setting the record straight 👍 Those clips of him going down into the butterfly were awesome 👏

Yes he did go down into the butterfly but he also got back up right away after controlling the rebound ! He did not stay down flopping around like a fish out of water . There is no way that when they are down on the ice that they can follow the puck !

I didn’t know Glenn was that good with the butterfly. Those were some awesome clips. Also interesting to see how wide his butterfly was even though he was one of the first goalies to use it. I love these historical videos, can’t wait to see more!

The thing I find amazing is that he invented the butterfly at a time when players first started using the slap shot and he wasn't even wearing a mask. And he also still to this day has the NHL goalie iron man record for going the longest period of time without missing a game.

I hate the way goalies are on their knees all the time ! Works half assed for goal tenders well over six feet tall!

Blocking the bottom part of the net is absolutely the best way for goalie to stop shots in close. But I also would like to see goalies stay on their feet more though. It really bugs me when they get beat over the shoulder on bad angle shots. If they stayed on their feet with their big bulky modern equipment there would be absolutely nothing to shoot at from bad angles.

@@JeffTheLeafsFan I did face some NHL caliber shots and it comes at you so fast that you just can't rely on tracking a high shot effectively unless it's far away. You need to cover the area where it most likely to be shot first. You seal as much as you can and rely on reflexes afterwards. Also staying up makes any rebounds more difficult to control if you don't cover it right away and you need to go back to your butterfly anyway to kill the play.

@@kaporalf150 I'm mostly in favour of the way goalies play now, but at times it just seems too mechanical and automatic. I get doing blocking moves when there is very little time to react, but on some of these bad angle shots I'm still convinced the best blocking move is staying on your feet. And I miss seeing goalies stack the pads every once in a while too lol!

The first hockey league to allow goalies to drop to the ice was not the NHL, it was the coloured hockey league in 1895!

Hall's retired number hangs in the United Center. I never knew much about him until your video made me curious enough to find out more. Thanks for putting this together, it's fantastic history!

@@bb-gc2tx That might be all they share though! Lol! Glenn Hall is a class guy, Billy Smith not so much. Lol! On the ice anyways, I don't know much about him off the ice. I knew about Billy Smith and his coloured Koho pads. Koho started making the old school leather pads in team colours in the late 70's and then got some NHLers to start wearing them.
