A PBS documentary from 1983 co-produced with the BBC.
From the VHS box: "Volcanoes produce a wide variety of different features on the surface, which are often controlled by the viscosity of the magma, which is in turn controlled by its composition and the temperature at which it is erupted. This is demonstrated with a variety of volcanic features from active volcanoes in Iceland, Hawaii, Sicily, and North America. Includes unique footage of a number of important eruptions such as those of Mt. St. Helens in the U.S.A. Also examines the volcanic and sub-volcanic igneous structures."

I'm of the viewpoint that these older volcanic documentaries are far more complex with quite an educational feature. This is like the beginning of an A-level geology course compared to the documentaries that are aired today.This video is a lot to take in and is very good. Technology might be better today with advancing features but many documentaries lack depth and effort. This video is an example of how clever people really can be. I like this, and to learn about the Scotland basalts of ancient history demonstrates in actual fact that we was once thriving upon the realms of tectonic activity.

This looks to be a broadcast meant for in-school use. Many PBS stations offered such programming back in the 80's, sometimes in the wee hours of the night for teachers to record and later play in class.. I think some stations may still do so, though the Net makes it unnecessary in most places. . Thanks for posting it.

Do you have any others from this series? It had some fantastic episodes that go deeply into how geologists work! I've been searching for the episodes about deserts (mostly sand dunes) and the episode about glaciers? Thanks for posting this one.

are you a student of geology or volcanology ? i am searching for evidence of the next big eruption around the world eversense i heard about krakatoa eruption in 1883 i was like WOW!!! what is going on now ? is it just me or are we in what seems like a quiet time for volcano activity i ask this because i have not heard anything about any activity for quite a while now today's date is 5/9/20 i have watched every documentary on this topic and some several times i hate the documentary that says yellowstone is about to erupt any day now because i don't believe it
