Wintertime is a good time for making new wool skirts with which we can go frolicking in the snow. And with intentional adjustability, our bodies can more easily do what they do without shame or guilt. Plus, it makes lending or giving clothes to other humans easier too!

I have been on a quest to make adjustable skirts after seeing the genius of 18th century petticoats. I’ve made two petticoats, with the slits at the side seams like this and while I love the adjustability I don’t love the feeling of tape tied around my waist 😆 so I’m always trying to figure out new ways. I like the idea of the buttons!! At least that way you’d only have the tape around your waist once.

Not-so-secret-secret: I realized once this was finished that the tape isn’t actually necessary! It makes the skirt a little bit easier to put on, but not that much. The buttons do all the work! So if the tape bothers you it can be omitted. :D

@@KristineVike in a garment with buttons or elastic waistband playing a crucial role I always have a safety pin attached to a seam allowance just in case...

I am in love with this. One day, I will make a wool skirt (after I've saved enough money to justify buying the fabric), and I *will* make them adjustable, because our bodies will do what our bodies will do, and we shouldn't shame them for it!

I have just found your channel and I am subscribing, who can resist a lovely skirt, kitties and snowy scenery. I spent two years of my childhood in Norway and it was the most beautiful country I lived in. The people are wonderful too. Happy times.

It's very cold today where I live and now I want a skirt like yours. Both my 18th century outer petticoats are linen, which is great in summer, not so much now!

really lovely fabric and it worked so well for a skirt! I love the shawl you're wearing...what pattern is it? Also, really appreciated your linen tape hem tip, especially for bulkier wool - I will have to give it a try next time I make a wool skirt!

I am by nature a pants person. I've never worn skirts regularly, and it's always been because they feel like they would get in the way. I see such beautiful historybounding skirts, but worry about their fuss level. But I love this skirt. It looks beautiful and cozy on you, and not at all in the way. It might just make me finally try to make and wear one...

I... actually like pants a lot too! I just haven't gotten around to practice drafting them yet. But it is something I wish to explore more in the not-too-distant future! If you wish to give skirts a try through, I find that keeping them above ankle length helps with them getting in the way when I am out and about. And always-ALWAYS make sure to add pockets even if it is just a "fast" make. Your future self will thank you.

"...that thing where you fold the fabric down before gathering to reduce bulk in the waistband": what *is* that thing? I can't picture it and I would love to know since I'm planning to make some gathered wool skirts like this before next winter!

I think what I am referring to is the historical practice in cartridge pleated skirts where they would bind off the top of the skirt separately from the waistband, and then fold the top of the skirt down, so just the top/fold of the pleats would be stitched to the waistband/bodice. This is extra useful in cartridge pleated skirts, since the added bulk at the top where the seam allowance is folded down can help the cartridge pleats be more defined. So there is no seam allowance *in* the waistband. They would just be stitched edge to edge. Hope that helps!

Such a lovely assistant you have! In regards to the buttons, the ones you used are pretty, but I'm wondering if they don't feel uncomfortably big if you use the tightest ones and the others are left below the waist line.

If you make another wool skirt, try lining it with a silk. It sounds off, but silk keeps the wind from blowing through

Hi! I'm making a similar kind of skirt right now. Did you make any adjustments with the back panel to account for rump? Or is your hem just a little shorter in back? I made my back panel longer, but with a checked pattern I'm trying to match up, I'm trying to figure out what to do with the mismatched lengths at the side seams and pocket slits.

I didn’t add extra length on this one, though I wish I had. I think I’d try to put it on top, but without experimenting I can’t sure how it’d look I’m afraid.

What a lovely video! I've been looking for a skirt pattern that is as adjustable as this one is, and am going to try to make my own! I am a little bit confused about the placements of the pockets, however. Are the pockets only sewn into the back of the skirt, or the front of the skirt? Does it not impede on practicality when only one side of the pocket is attached to the skirt?

I did not find the practicality to be too much impeded by having the pocket attached to only one side. But if that is a worry of yours, you could always attach a placket to the edge of the back panel, like I did in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N4MgzdWNe7k.html But I did attach the pockets to the back of the front panel in this one. But if adding a placket, I would attach it to the back panel.

I am just topstitching it. Which also make thewaistband stiffer on account of squashing more fabric into a smaller area. :)
