GROW Plants From Store Bought Seeds! It's really easy to grow your own lentil sprouts, pea shoots, and mustard microgreens on the cheap! This really is the EASIEST Indoor Gardening Project that I've EVER done!!! Most are ready to eat in less than 7 days! Fast forward to 4:25 to see the day 7 overview. The lentils were eaten on day 5. The list of what all I grew is down below! Thanks for watching!
Tip: If you notice a bad odor emanating from your sprouts or seeds you need to start over. This indicates decay/bacterial growth.
Lentils sprouts
Pea Shoots
Mustard Microgreens
Cilantro (from coriander)
Scallions
White onion
Red Beans
A pretty nifty microgreen starter kit...

I love lentil sprouts. I took an old mason jar with one of those two piece screw on caps, removed the flat part of the lid leaving just the ring. To the inside of the ring I attached a piece of mesh so that I can soak, rinse, drain and grow all in one jar. Works fantastic. The hard part of sprouting greens is just finding a variety of seeds locally.

I always regrow my green onions. I use the green parts and then pop them into a glass with some water in it and let them regrow. I usually get at least two sets of greens out of them. Great video! I think you meant to say 'synopsis' (as it means 'a brief summary or general survey) and not 'synapses' (a junction between two nerve cells, consisting of a minute gap across which impulses pass by diffusion of a neurotransmitter).

I sprout for 2 reasons, to get a head start on gardening, I am a Northern, beans & peas must be rinsed twice a day or bacteria begins to grow eventually to much rot, I sprout flower seeds also for garden spreading peat moss over later in garden beds, onion for sets, squash of all sorts, but with pumpkin & squash keep dark, all kinds of sunflowers...under a week than put sunflowers seedsprouts in Sun & little dirt..for flower plants on Sun flowers species...put in 2-3 inch for transplanting..tin can, etc..as Sun flowers are touchy roots....for salad sprouts..You have to try this .Lemon sunflowers even 3" are so good,put in Sun after you see white leaf, after 1-2 days green & tasty..radish, onion..yum..lentil & broccoli excellent for preventing cancer...I have never tried my pea & bean sprouts for eating..but have ate snow pea sprouts..yum yum. just rinse, once a day, except for beans & peas 2x a day. Spread out in lids, small plates, but give legumes a lot of room, one layer, if you try them for extra 2 week jump start .Some herbs are better to sprout for starting for plants as you may be waiting forever to begin. .

Nice job! Your warning at 6:00 is to be taken seriously. If sprouting seeds are not properly surface sterilized, and then not rinsed thoroughly enough during the sprout time , bad things can happen to the GI tract. And there does NOT have to be any foul odor as a warning. almost 30 years.... and I have not sprouted my own since, LOL

Microgreens are pricey here in the States. I was super impressed that you could grow them so cheaply just from everyday stuff at your local market. They are packed with flavor and make a really nice garnish. Thank you for watching and commenting Albert! I appreciate you!

Spring onions are much more resilient than you think. I never bother to wrap the roots in paper towel, in fact I leave them in the fridge and as I use them I save the roots and plant them in pots and they work really well. For better flavour though use a healthy soil with compost and feed. Also any seeds on healthy soil will produce sprouts that are better for you and more full of nutrients and they will develop faster

I planted the bottom two inches of green onions from the ones purchased at the market. I cut the outer leaves to eat when needed. They continued to grow for two years and would have continued to grown, but I had to harvest them before going on vacation. I will try some of the greens you have shown in your video. Thanks for the information.

Be sure that you are misting your sprouts, or seedlings, with water which has been filtered, or city water which has been sitting, for 48 hours, or 2 days, in order to get rid of the Chlorine, or Chloramine which is in all city water, use rain water when possible, filtered thru a coffee filter, or you will stop up your spray bottle nozzle, so filter your water, U can use a sewing needle to clear a stopped up spray nozzle.
@kfox5301
@kfox5301 5 лет назад
That's not really necessary. It helps lower the chance of mold growth anyway. I've never filtered my tap water for microgreens or herb growing. It's beneficial if you're doing hydro/aquaponics

Cuz i also do love to experiment but I do not want to be consuming something I'm not supposed to you know?

You don't need to plant the whole scallion. Everyone cuts off the end before eating or slicing. Right? Just cut off the root area with a bit more of the white onion head left on the rooted area. It will start rooting if you sit the root into some soil lightly and then later you can add some soil to top lightly...IF you see it growing. You don't want to bury it right away...let it have a day or two and don't over water. Works.

you have answered my question ,only problem is I got expensive organic broccoli spouts that smelt bad,is it the paper towel.??
@Mooreapproved
@Mooreapproved 7 лет назад
If all of the seeds don't germinate they start to break down and produce a bad smell. Also, if the seeds are too dense there isn't enough air flow to keep them healthy and mold can start to grow. If you grow in the soil you can get the same thing if there is too much water, too many seeds and not enough airflow, and/or bad seeds. It takes a little trial and error to get the watering regiment just right. Too much water will make mold other undesirable things more prevalent. If you are noticing a lot of non germinated seeds I'd recommend contacting the company that sold you the seeds. Organic seeds, as you pointed out, are really expensive and if they aren't hitting the expected germination rate listed on the package they should replace them. Try using some organic flax seeds from your local supermarket to hone things in. It's way cheaper to practice with and they are quite satisfying.
@mysoutherngardeningjourney
@mysoutherngardeningjourney 6 лет назад
IME broccoli/kale/cabbage sprouting seeds don't stay viable very long. So a lot of them will just rot instead of germinating. Which ruins the whole batch.

@maranatha1281
@maranatha1281 5 лет назад
Alfalfa sprouts are super EZ to grow. all you need are the seeds, jars, cheese cloth and rubber bands. I get my seeds from Vitacost. Handy Pantry is the best brand. Go to Walmart and get a case of wide mouth kerr jars. abour $ 10.00 for 12 jars. I put the jars in the dishwasher to sterilize. Ready to rock-n- Roll. Put about an oz-2 in a jar and soak for 8 or more hrs. I just do it before I go to bed. Because alfalfa seeds are so small you will need cheese cloth. Buy it anywhere. Vitacost, Walmart etc. At the dollar store buy a pack of thick hair ties that will fit around the mason jar, or if you save large thick rubber bands that'll work too. Cut a double layer of lite cheese cloth, single layer if thick large enough to fit over the jar with a little extra so you cad secure the rubber band over the bottle. Make it tight. Do this the nite before while soaking so no bugs or anything gets in. In the morning, pour water out through the cheese cloth of course. fill bottle half or so full again to rinse. Tip bottle at an angle, not upside down till all or most of the water is out. Seeds will cling to cheese cloth. Just tap the top so they fall down. Find a sunny window, Roll up a towel to elevate the jar at little so seeds have good drainage. Might want to but a towel or something under the jars. I always do 3 or 4 jars at a time of different seeds. Just don't forget to rinse them 2X a day. that's it. Be ready in a week or less. If there is any smell to them or if they are mushy. DON'T EAT. After the first couple of times you'll get the hang. A perfect jar for me is one heaping soup spoon. Good luck. Lotta words,,, but super simple.

Toward the end you made mention of possible bacterial growth, (unpleasant odor etc) So question is, can this germination process be recommended in a very humid, tropical area? Or is is not recommended? We use a dehumidifier to obtain water and then strongly filter it to make it safe for consumption, as we reside in a highly humid environment much of the year. Thats how much humidity there is. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated
@Mooreapproved
@Mooreapproved 4 года назад
You'd really have to experiment a bit. The germination process is typically faster in warm/humid conditions so it may be a bonus. After germination you may have to use a small fan in a dark area just to promote air flow. That step may not be necessary though depending on what you're sprouting.

Hi Annie! I assume you're asking about the light I used to grow the micro-greens? There are a ton of options out there but the model I use primarily is the "Galaxyhydro LED Grow Light,300W Indoor Plant Grow Lights Full Spectrum". amzn.to/2uBTNSG (This is an affiliate link) However.... If you have a window that gets good light for the majority of the day... You really shouldn't need any additional light to be successful. If you want to have a never ending supply of greens and space is an issue... Then maybe look into investing in a timer, tent, and light to grow your produce. It can definitely get expensive! So if you're just getting into it. Do it as cheap as possible. If you fall in love with it... There are some really nice kits available for decent prices. Hope this helps!

Use an indoor potting soil if you are planning on going with dirt. Miracle grow for indoor plants... etc... The indoor rated varieties are typically heated to a certain temperature or "purified" in some way to kill larvae and whatnot. You can always check online for soils that won't have any pests and can probably find them at your local home centers. My recommendation would be to use the paper towel method for micro-greens first and then progress from there. If bugs do appear they were already indoors. Happy gardening!

Do they need lots of sun?

Would it really be an issue of there's seeds decomposing in the soil? Isn't that what soil is to begin with? Surely that doesn't translate into the healthy plants growing on top?

Do we keep the microgreen in sunlight or it will grow in shade

The first 3-4 days keep them in a dark place. After they reach 1" or so place them in the light.

I'm assuming you're referring to the lentils? If so. I didn't really do anything after they sprouted as there weren't any foul odors from the batch and if I were to prepare the dried lentils traditionally I would be consuming them anyway. All I did to that batch was rinse them well, pick out the ones that hadn't sprouted (only 2 or three individual lentils out of the 100+ that I started) and lightly saute them with some fresh minced garlic, olive oil, sea salt, and some fresh ground tellicherry peppercorns. I really enjoy lentils... This makes them even better. They'd function really well in any of your favorite lentil dishes. You just don't have to cook them as long. I even substituted them for sprouted mung beans in a stir fry dish. They were fantastic. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!

@@Mooreapproved You are so welcome. After my "Indoor Experiment", I truly suggest you plant them ONLY outdoors ~ unless it's the chives you're looking for. Have fun!

Both really. I'm a huge fan of sprouts in a stir fry but they go great in salads too.

We eat them raw - they taste sweeter that way. Part of a salad. But if you have a sensitive digestive system, you may need to take a digestive enzyme when you eat them.

Holy crap! Are you in a warm temperature? My house is always so cold and my sprouts look sad😢 do you use grow lights?
@Mooreapproved
@Mooreapproved 4 года назад
I typically keep the house in the mid to upper 70's. You really shouldn't need a grow light for the micro greens but warmth will make a world of difference. I believe they sell warming/starter mats fairly inexpensive on amazon. Might be a good investment if you plan on growing sprouts on a regular basis.
