I decided to keep it simple with 4 tomato types this year. Supersweet 100 cherries, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, and Pink Brandywine. I'm using a cloths line as vertical support for strings that will be tied off to ground stakes. I'm going to keep the plants to 1 leader and 2 suckers and just keep the rest plucked off to save room. I found that keeping an indeterminate mater to a single stem makes them way too tall, so more than one typically keeps them below 6 feet here in zone 8b.

If you only have one or two tomato plants take some cuttings and root them in a pot. I`ve kept the same tough cherry tomato plant alive for years this way. I get woody cuttings before cold weather and put them in a pot inside with just enough light to keep them alive. The next spring I have cherry tomatoes very fast and make as many plants as I need from the cutting shoots.

I’m in zone 9b. I have blush, Cherokee purple, red centifleur, and sun sugar. I start my tomatoes the last day of the year, Dec. 31 st in doors under grow lights in my laundry room. It stays warm in there all year in the 70’s. Anyway, they went in the ground in the middle of February. Blush are doing fantastic and have tons of babies. My red centifleur has been slow to fruit. My Cherokee have huge blooms on them so hoping for some big purple tomatoes!

Travis, we need to open up a "Dawg Bucket" store!!!!! Between the buckets and cups we could help feed all of America some awesome groceries!!! I decided to plant 95% determinate varieties this year and focused on heat set gene types (after the month of insane heat and no rain we had last year). The only indeterminates I'm planting are my cherry type and you can't get that flavor in a determinate (Sun Gold and Sweet Aperitif). I guess I need to drive to Monroe at the HD and pick up a Dawg's Bucket as I confess I currently do not have one and the local stores are out of stock.

For me, here in the hot, hot south (North Texas) any of the determinate tomatoes are easy for the spring. Super Sioux, Bush Beefsteak, or/and Red Snapper and for a yellow I've grown Nebraska Wedding for years and always been happy. Probably need a big 'N' on the bucket for the Nebraska Wedding fertilizer 😉All those plants look real good. Kind of curious why you chose to put the tomatoes and potatoes in the same bed but you say you plan on spraying so all will be good. Hope you have a really successful season and can't wait to see the harvest videos!

I think that comment about "hilling taters real real tall" deserves a field trip to one of those folks you know using equipment to pile the potatoes up. Then a revisit once they harvest. Because at this point their process could be educational. By the way, I followed your seed potato bread crumbs and ordered some for myself to experiment this year. Can they beat the old-trusty method of the bag of store potatoes that sprouted on their own in the pantry? I'm still a few weeks away from planting time here.

No issues with blossom end rot here. I credit a combination of using mulch and having a decent amount of clay in the soil. I grow determinates as a rule, though I don't fill the garden with tomato plants as I won't eat them all. This year is Amish Paste and Sun Gold Cherry. No slicers, though I could make Amish Paste work for that if necessary.

Well I planted the red snapper this year first time, hoping it is easy one to grow lol. They are about 3 feet tall and do have a couple three flowers on them. I tried Red Snapper per your videos. Great the first year. The following year, root knot nematodes got 'em (but I had another one in a container which did well and saved the day). This year I'm doing Mountain Fresh Plus and Supersweet 100 in the ground because they're supposedly nematode resistant. So far so good. I also have my old favorite, Mortgage Lifter, and two Romas in containers.
@maggidull1952
@maggidull1952 Год назад
I use containers to grow tomatoes also because of root knot nematodes. However, I had some volunteers sprout in my flower bed, and have had some ripe very nice medium sized tomatoes already, with many more to come. I have figured out they are probably Amish paste that I had tried last year. I'm watching the plant to see if root knot ultimately affects it. I am also growing San Marzano, Egyptian Princess(seed handed down from a friend), Brave Heart, Celebration, Chef Choice Black, plus cherry tomatoes, Sun Sugar and SunGold. I love growing the different types of tomatoes, and sometimes select type just because of its unusual name. Gardening in SWFL, Zone 10A can be quite challenging, but we can grow at the time of year others can only dream about gardening. On the other hand, when others have a beautiful green gardens in the summer, I am relegated to growing Okra, peppers, and a nice tasty garden snack called ground cherry. Happy gardening!

Wow! Eye opener at 11:50 mark. You plant the roots right on the fertilizer. If that was the standard commercial 13-13-13 garden fertilizer, they would just burn out. I’ll probably mix it in a little with the cover dirt. And there might be a concern for animals to get at it, which is why you probably choose to cover it whole. And you just side-dress your other crops since it would take forever for you to individually apply it more uniformly on your hands and knees like here.
@LazyDogFarm

Yeah you definitely couldn't do what I did with commercial fertilizer. That's one reason why I like the Nature Safe stuff so much.

Curious if red snapper and roadster, being a determinate, are they a one and done on producing, or will they continue through the summer...? As far as hilling potatoes, I've always used a deep mulch, 12" deep, and had pretty good results, although this year I will hold off of the mulch, so I can add fertilizer, probably hill with some composted horse manure. I usually use mulch in the heat of summer to keep soil from drying out... it gets 110 to 115 here, and it's a dry heat, zero humidity.

Why and where do you even think Fish emulsion fertilizer came from exactly? The problem is that, theirs so much confusion and miss information out there, and most people, including long time gardeners, don't fully understand how soil, or fertilization even works. First off, when most look down at their soil, all they see is dirt....a combination of rock, sand, silt, clay and composted roots and twigs and sticks. If you look at soil under a microscope, it's actually teaming with life. Millions of microorganisms, bacteria and fungi and many other things. When you use any kind of fertilizers, most of it can't directly feed your plants roots. The bacteria and fungi and all the microbiology first must eat these fertilizers, and then the stuff they secrete, as a buy product is actually what feeds your roots. They way to use fish is not to put a full fresh fish in your ground and then plant over it. The best way is to place it in the ground well before you plant, and then allow it to rot and ferment and turn into liquid and then it will work miracles on your plants, and the Indians knew this as well. Take some fresh fish and blend it, mixed with rain water, no sink water because all the chemicals in your tap water are made to kill microbiology. Blend it into a gelatin like sate, then place it in a food safe 5 gallon bucket, then go into the woods, under a tree, and swash away the leaves and get a few handfuls of the soil just below the leaf layer, which is called leaf mold. Then fill the bucket about half full of rain water, pour in your blended fish and a few handfuls of leaf mold, seal the bucket and wait. That leaf mold is teaming with the exact microbiology that will break down that fish very very quickly. After about 4 to 6 months you will have a liquid that you can dip out of to mix with water for your plants, After a full year it will be perfect, and the fish will be completely gone, scales and bones and all, and what's left behind is pure gold for your plants roots and it's 1000 times more potent then these silly Fish emulsion products at the store. Very high in nitrogen and calcium and potassium and magnesium and other trace elements as well. You can also burn logs and mix the ash with rain water to give your plants tons of potassium. What do you think Potash is? Of course the big fertilizer companies don't want you to know that, or how easy it is to make. It was known by our ancestors as Pot Ash.... two words, but the companies like Miracle Grow made it one word Potash to make it sound like some mysterious element that's unattainable and only they have. Our ancestors recognized generations ago that after a forest fire cooled, the plant life of that area would explode with growth from the ash. All throughout the early days of this country, up until the 60's farmers and gardeners made Wood Ash as a fertilizer. Many rumors have been spread claiming that wood ash would hurt your soil PH levels, but that actually is complete bologna. It would take an extreme amount to change your PH. You can also take all your garden waste, all the greens and bad fruits and stems and roots and let it sit in rain water with leaf mold and allow it to fermint and it makes a very good balanced fertilizer. You can also fermint yours and your families and your pets urine the same way and it makes a great Nitrogen rich fertilizer, I know it sounds gross, but it's just pepe, 95 % water. If you have your urine tested for all it's elements, the main thing in it is uriea, now go look at the ingredients label on your high nitrogen store purchased fertilizer and see what kind of Nitrogen it has. More often then not, it will say Nitrogen from urea. Theirs tons of old knowledge out there about natural fertilizers, many of which are almost extinct, that our ancestors used to garden and grow with. I mean how did you think our ancestors made beautiful tasty vegetables back in the old days, before garden centers, or hardware stores, or companies like Miraclegrow, or Neptune's Harvest, or Dr Earth and on and on? I mean they had to be using something right?

I have always heard that you don't plant tomatoes near potatoes or corn. Tomatoes make potatoes more susceptible to potato blight.

If you're limited on space and can't rotate, that's probably a good idea.

@@LazyDogFarm I recommended your channel to my local farm store. The man who runs it bought it about six years ago and has been learning about plants etc. I also recommended Hoss Tools. I'm in NE Georgia and I have really enjoyed your videos(learned a lot) and Hoss Tools products. I tried to find the 8-5-5 fertilizer and couldn't find it. Do you think the place you get yours in south Georgia would ship it to me?
