Common mistake I see with these c wire how to videos. You pull off the old thermostat and assume there is no c wire. It may be there it's just not hooked up, look at the other end of the cable in the furnace. Many of my friends and family that put in a smart thermostat don't need the adapter. Most houses I've seen that are 90's and newer use 8 conductor cable for the thermostat and only use 4 of them, the others are tucked back in the wall. Investigate a little further see if rerouting a new cable is possible as it is preferable. 8 conductor thermostat wire can be found at local hardware stores for a few bucks.

Yup, exact same scenario for me . Idk where to connect the C wire though in the furnace to get the 24V . It’s a older furnace .

I did have to install one of those add a wire units for one client of mine. For another, I was able to run a new thermostat cable to get enough wires. On the thermostat I just installed for my home, it indicated that I could wire G to C at both the thermostat and furnace, with a jumper between Y and G at the furnace. I guess you lose the ability to control the fan manually, but it still runs when heating or cooling. My old thermostat only used 4 wires, so I thought I would have to deal with that. Fortunately, there were enough wires in the thermostat cable. I just needed to connect one of the unused wires to the furnace's C terminal. BTW, I think of C as Cyan, thus using the blue wire.

Do I look at the unit outside, or is it the handler in the garage I have to explore in? I'm kinda thinking just get a new wire and run a new 7wire cable and be done, no converters needed.

If you only have heat via hot water (baseboard), IOW no air conditioning and no fan, you're probably only going to have two wires going to your thermostat. I simply wired an ac adapter to my smart thermostat to power it..

If the current thermostat wire is not tacked down inside the wall, just tape up a new thermo cable and pull it through. Thanks for the great and clear explanation on how to install this add a wire. I wanted to ask; we have a Lennox packaged unit that came with a Lennox smart thermostat. The thermostat just stopped working right after the 5-year warranty, and the "authorized dealer" installed a Honeywell T6 Pro Wi-Fi thermostat. This new thermostat cannot rev up our unit to kick in the 2nd stage cooling that was working with the old Lennox thermostat (iComfortE30), and the dealer told us that we needed an additional wire to make this 2nd stage work. Running a 2nd wire would be cost prohibiting for us, based on out setup. Would the add a wire solve this? we also only have 4 wires coming from the unit on the roof to the inside where the thermostat is at. Thanks for your time in advance! 🙏
