In this video, we'll learn a great, beginner-friendly & cost-effective approach to replicating Zimmerit anti-magnetic paste to your 1/35 plastic scale model German Panzer tanks. Starting in the winter of 1943, the German armaments industry applied this special paste to nearly every major tank, tank destroyer & SPG rolling out of factories across Europe. If you're at all interested in modeling German tanks from WWII, then sooner or later you're going to need to make some Zimmerit!

Hey Hank, I wasn't aware Tamiya did as many sets specific to each vehicle which is of course good to know, and I'm now impatiently waiting for Part 2. Cheers Mate from NZ

I believe Tamiya also offers a set that can be glued on with extra thin cement. The zimmerit application was 5mm thick, which converts to .14 mm in 1/35, so these kits are the closest you can probably get to “real” thickness. Thanks for the video, a great review!

Great FYI! That Panther D looked great!! Can't wait to see the final result of your Panzer IV J. These sets work nicely with other kit manufacturers, as well with a little adjustment. I used one of the Tamiya sets with my Meng Panther D.

I got a similar set from an internet individual for the Monogram panzer 4 it came out pretty good. The set even works on the 21st century toys pnzer4 which are very close to the Monogram kits. He was very helpful and was going to make other sets.

It makes sense to go to ATAK where they make one product, zimmerit. I use them all the time and if they do not have exactly what you want, for instance, you have a Tamiya kit and all they have is Zimmerit products for Academy, make it fit. Gaps can be easily filled by mixing up Tamiya paste with Tamiya glue, apply carefully then used a Zimmerit roller or some other tool that is able to replicate the zimmerit. I notice that using these stickers made by Tamiya, there are not 3D (not printed) parts like the Gun mantlet, the hull turret gun, part for the rear of the tank. Some of ATAK products include a full turret that will allow you to use the kit parts in the same way that the kit calls for. ATAK is a little more than twice the price of the Tamiya sheets but offers far, far more.

I would suggest that you get a cuticle pusher or a tongue depressor for pressing stickers (or decals) into tight spaces instead of the back of an exacto blade. Having been cut by a hobby knife, I can tell you that it is painful and can happen quickly. So take my advice and be safe when you can.

Great explanation of why zimmerit was developed. Too often I've heard people say "The Russians had magnetic mines/grenades, therefore. . . " , when that's really just not true. Also, thanks so much for listing out details on what models, paints, accessories, tools, etc. you use in a video.

Interesting but I'm not certain Tamiya's zimmerit stickers actually present the depth of zimmerit and it looks a little uniform for my liking, I've been using ATAK zimmerit which is far better, yes, it costs that bit more and they don't cater to every kit but it looks superb when fitted correctly and they also include resin parts with the zimmerit pattern present for the more challenging parts.

I tied the zimmerit sticker method for my 1/35 Panther G (the Tamiya one) I didn’t really enjoy it tbh I’ve always enjoyed modelling zimmerit by hand as it also has that hand crafted feel. I found the stickers to be annoying to cut out and apply. I’ll always prefer to model zimmerit by hand.

Any issues with edge pealing in your experience? Used these stickers on the Tamiya Elefant, overall I’m happy with it but after priming noticed quite a few areas on which the edges were lifting and not really staying. I ended up touching up with super glue, I’m wondering if this is a universal experience or first time user error.

oh what this are stickers? haha I have like 5 sheets for different kits here but did not come around to building one of these kits. I can recomment atak Zimmerit (Resin ultra thin) and also the decals from Meng, which need to be fixed with some glue additionally to have them fixed long term.
