I've been using Linux for about 3 years and stuck with the more beginner friendly distros. Debian and I haven't always gotten along, but I've always wanted to try using it as my daily driver to cut all the Red Hats, and Canonicals out of my distros. This was a step in the right direction. Though I used a different method to make myself a sudoer. (I already forgot which one already. lol) Anyway, Thanks!

@techforlife91 Hey. I have another issue. My Nvidia graphics card is installed but imy steam games are still using the fallback GPU driver. The option for Nvidia isn't even available even with it being installed...

Do you have proton experimental activated in steam? What model do you have? What linux distro and version are you using?

@techforlife91 Edit: Solved it. Deleted the .config file in the X11 directory and that did it for some reason. Thanks again for replying and trying to help. Cheers man

I can see this is helpful to some, but you say that driver 525 is perfect for you..is it though, that driver is more than a year old, maybe a video of how to install the latest nvidia driver from their website would show more useful ?

Hi, I won't recommend you installing the drivers from Nvidia if your using Debian 12. Debian is one of the most stable linux because the devs checks and fix everything before release , including drivers. At the moment the nvidia drivers 550 is not fully supported by debian and I don't think they will support them as they are working on debian 13 ( probably we will see the latest drivers here). You can install the drivers but expect bugs and problems. Personally I won't recommend you doing it, but if you want to give it a go: www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2021/debian-ubuntu-linux-mint-nvidia-guide/ Please keep in mind, your user needs to be a sudoer before trying this. Again i do not recommend you doing this if your using Debian

@@techforlife91 Thank you for your reply and you are right, most users I read use the Debian backports to enable them to use newer kernels for newer drivers etc., which again beats the purpose of Debian. The problem though with that ancient driver is that it doesn't have Vulkan 1.3 support, so for anything gaming with a game newer than 3 years you will have performance issues at best, and games not even starting at worst. But for having a stable system for just browsing and most everyday tasks Debian is great. I wouldn't recommend it if one wants the most out of a RTX card though. I distrohopped to OpenSuse Leap for the time being, so far it looks and feels great :)
