40 yrs old ran Philadelphia broad street run with a sub 1:20 goal TODAY 5/1/22… Ran a 1:18:49. The whole BPN team is an inspiration. Good luck with your little girl, I have a almost 4 yr old one! GO ONE MORE
I ran my first marathon yesterday (Eisenhower Marathon Abilene KS) and I went WAY too aggressive in the beginning and had a brutal last leg. I really cramped up in the last few miles and had to walk the final stint. The good thing is I've learned from that experience and will proceed to try better next time. (My time was 4 hrs 44 mins)
Good going, brother! Could have learned from this video before going, but That’s great time for your first EVER marathon. I’m training for my first marathon as well
Thanks for the great marathon content Nick. Helped me so much to achieve a 3:50 marathon time today on my first try. Best of luck in yours in a few weeks!
I just ran my first 1/2 marathon yesterday and followed this series to help with some of my training. I was able to beat my goal time by about 8 minutes. (Goal was based off of the pace I anticipated I would run based on runs of shorter distances). I really enjoy all of your content and watching your journey as you push to improve upon your training and results, as well as educating many of us.
Nick, just did my first full marathon today (Pittsburgh Marathon) in downpouring rain! Keep inspiring man and wow even more impressive what you do now that I’ve done one!
@@hunterdennehy5496 thank you! Did real well on the half marathon around 2 hr 5 mins but went out too hot and started cramping bad around mile 18. Happy overall though
Just ran that race also. Ran the half marathon but working towards the full marathon in a couple months. That rain sure was something so congrats on finishing the full marathon.
Wow, the RU-vid algorithm is a such a splendid invention...I just "found" this video, which I've seen already, again yesterday, before my own ten-miler this morning. I'm glad to have re-watched it, because your advice about losing control, and about not letting the run control you during the workout was something that I had forgotten since seeing this video last time, and something that I heard throughout my time out on the road today, especially went I got tired and would start to lose focus on the mechanics of the run, especially my breathing, which is paramount for me to "stay in control". Thanks once more for a great post..."Go One More"!
I clicked on this video to ruin my next marathon and I must say, I'm not impressed. This video was so informative and helpful for succeeding in a marathon I couldn't stand it!
I ran in zone 3 (155bpm) this morning trying to stay in zone 2. It’s not easy and if you’re not tracking via heartbeat monitor, you’re probably running too fast. I’m looking forward to my hard days and really separating the two (easy v hard) and seeing what my results will be. Great video as always 🏴☠️
This is what I needed. I took a year break from running and getting back into it now. I need to learn to become more discipline in restraining myself for greater endurance.
@@sidniesantos8485 Thanks for that! I have about 20 pounds to lose. What keeps me in it is how I felt when I was averaging 6-9 miles a day. I was down to 178 lbs and I felt incredible. Good luck to you too!
Sick videos, sick edits, sick soundtracks, you get me so pumped to run!! Hope to do a run in the states one day and grab a photo with you!! So inspiring!! 🎉
I need this. Love all your videos and swear I have went through and watched almost all of them. I have a hard time as a "newer" runner to run those slower paces 80% of the time, but so far it really has paid off and helped with my endurance and running though.
Perfect timing on this video. I normally reserve my Sunday's for my 2nd BIG RUN. Today, I felt the need to run at a controlled pace for my 2nd 10K of the week - 47:37 felt good and comfortable. Not close to a PR but felt good. Thanks!
Another great video from BPN. That video team kills these videos as well as Nick kills his workouts! On the exercising front, this topic was great for me to hear. I feel like I've been swimming in that soup sandwich a bit. I'm re-focused in my efforts to improve and get in better shape. No marathons or triathlons for me...yet anyway. Just building a base layer to get to a point where that's perhaps a real consideration for me. G.O.M.!
I make this mistake a lot, I feel good on my easy days so I push myself too hard, then when my hard days roll around I'm already dead from my "easy" days.
I’ll be there in Buffalo too. This will be #4 and going into week 13 on the training block. Easy days easy…Hard days hard. That is exactly what I have learned through this block. See you on the start line
I’ve a mate called Josh who has made me pace myself better throughout races and workouts lol. Great coincidence. I’m always able to have a really fast last rep but being able to hit consistent reps was better for my improvements
As much as i HATE the fact this man doesn't make his strava public, despite you can hide your route. He does speak straight facts about running. 3:46 I honestly believe is what makes Kipchoge great. "You have to feel in control of the run, don't let it control you"
Nick, I know you prioritize recovery; however, I'm not sure I've seen you stretch a lot in your videos. Do you stretch everyday? Would you consider making a video based around your stretching routine/workout?
A pre-run stretch routine is shown in Nick's fitness app. He states he takes maybe 20 minutes prior to his run to stretch, perform myofascial release, and activate his legs with a Theragun.
I gave Nick this advice a year or two ago in a comment, also some advice about increasing his cadence which I know he now adopts. I’m convinced he read my comments and is now a better runner because of it haha.
One thing i learned is i do long runs in the rain. I also do long runs in the cold. As well as long runs in the extreme heat. If you do not prepare for any element earth throws at you on race day it can and will end you. I watch the news and set aside time for running rain days and running in 30 degree temp days as well as running in 85 to 90 degree days.
Hey Nick, I have been following your channel for long and I will be running my first ever marathon in August this year. Can you suggest me a good marathon shoe? Also if you can make a small video about how to select a shoe for marathon with all the technicalities to keep in mind like toe box (large or small), cushion(side effects of too much cushioning), etc, it would be really helpful. Thanks:)
This might be a terribly stupid question, but I am kind of stuck. I am trying to implement the Maffetone method, but I am wildly out of shape. As soon as I start SLOW jogging, my heart rate pops way above zone 2. And no amount of slow breathing, relaxing into the stride, or slowing down more will bring my heart rate back down. 😩 Does this mean I just have to alternate between slow jogging and walking until I get in better shape? Or do I just need to go ahead and run and let my heart rate get up too high in the hopes that eventually when I’m in shape it will come back down? Thank you so much for your videos! You have encourage me to run again!
I made this mistake this last week. Decided to go out too hard and ended up hurting myself a d needing to take a few days off to prevent further injury.
I don’t use a heart rate monitor so I go by indicators like ability of having a conversation and breathing trough the nose only. Nevertheless, I am surprised sometimes by how quick I run on my easy days. Relatable? Or are you guys always running a lot slower on the easy days? Maybe I should start using the heart rate monitor to be sure I am not in that dreadful middle range.
Love the new product peak sleep, have y'all consider creating any more flavors like a vanilla bean ice cream because a lot of people love ice cream when heading to bed. I feel like if y'all had an ice cream peak sleep flavor people could sip on it cold or even freeze it or even possibly make ice cream with it. W
What am I supposed to do if running ANY pace is hard, there are no easy days. Either my cardio is shot or my legs give out I feel like I'm to out of shape to even start somewhere. Any advice?
Loving this series Nick! Is it possible you could reply with a recommended stack of your supplements for a track athlete? During my summer training I intend on running 50-60 miles per week with weight lifting and I want to plan it out. I was thinking of doing Strong Greens every morning, G1M sport before runs, and then strong food after workouts? Would love your thoughts, chasing after a life like yours man.
It just crazy to see how much effort Nick has to put into running with muscle vs the skinny hs kid. Skinny kid is running with no effort. It makes me want to drop all my muscle and just be skinny af lmao
Hey Nick, wanted to see if you could talk at all about if running too slow is a detriment to your training? Do you believe in garbage miles? As someone who's only been training for a relatively short time the slow "easy" conversation paced workouts are pretty darn slow.
Hey Nick, Sometimes we are unable to get control due to your partner always pushing you to get come quickly. So instead of running slow easy pace you end up pushing hard on your runs. Unable to stick to a proper training plan.
For someone who never really runs, where a mile or two feels rough, what’s a good way to be able to increase distance? Is there a particular format I should follow?
Nope..get the fuck after it everyday and you’ll build mileage overtime. Don’t set yourself up for failure by trying to run 10 miles off the bat. Create plateaus by upping your mileage weekly or bi-weekly. Most important, your diet is everything. If you eat like shit, your runs will show for it and you won’t progress. Don’t get to deep into the science since you are a beginner either. Just run and get a feel for what you can do,set a foundation and add to that. This is how I went from 300 pounds down to 180.
So you talk about making your easy runs easy, and making them controlled and watching HR. Well I am a already slow runner, my easy runs are about a 14:30-15 min per mile pace. So I feel like if I drop speed to control HR I’m not getting a very good run because I am going sooo slow. Advice?
Keep running slow and lose weight. Your hr will drop over time but it takes a lot of time. Running is measured in years and decades, not weeks and months
Hey Nick! Quick question. For a very new runner, what if we use the 180-(your age) thing to find our ideal hr range, and we go over that rate even for a really easy jog. Like I’m in my 20s and just getting into running, does that mean when that happens I just need to take a minute and walk? Because using that method it says my ideal is 145-155 and I’m usually sticking around 160 or 162. Does that make the workout not helpful?
Ive noticed you turn the barbell plates (where the brand name and weight are etched on the plate) inward toward you instead of outward. I’ve never seen someone do that. Is it for a particular reason or…its just a habit. Just curious…
I'm very impressed that a guy this size runs a marathon. Let alone being thin, a marathon is just not easy. I run 10-15K and it's already enough for me, and I'm thin. Imagine running 42K. It takes training but its not easy.
I have a question do you not drink anything during the run? Or do they have a bottle in the truck for you? Because I need to drink water at least at my 3rd mile
I run the majority of my runs around 4:50-5:05/km and it is harder time wise but leaves me feeling soooo much fresher. Especially since I run after school and don’t have a lot of time in the day to run and get my work done. I would run before school but I already have to get up at 6:40 anyway and I’m a big sleeper so used to the evening sets noe
@Daan Linders 17 and on and off sonce 13, properly since 15. It’s not that incredible when compared to my friends tho. Guy I’m friends with went from not running looking like a NFL running back, to now running a 15:01 5k while still being built like a running back and he’s 18. And he is like the 4th best in my running group, 8th best out of people I’m mates with (mates with a few international calibre runners)
Little more out of breath talking when runnin with that youngster? Side bar; you ever train without supplements? What happens when you stop taking them? Ever want to see how good you are without them? I’m taking a journey into that life now. Thanks for the vid.
A good rule of thumb is goal m.p + atleast 1min/km or 1 1/2min mile slower than m.p. So 8 1/4min mile on easy days for a 2:59 Marathoner or 70% of true max.hr if its a recovery day after a really hard workout then 75% is slightly too hard. 65% of max h.r will yield better results as fresher for the 2nd easy day-which may be 70-75% h.r for 40-70min on most easy days in between the 2 big wrkouts. Cheers
