Many people don't realise that there is a very simple trick you can use to multiply your strawberries to create literally a lifetime supply of strawberries. It's far easier than planting seeds or dividing plants! All you need is one plant. Ben show us how in this week's episode.

I love watching your videos. I have just ordered 25 eversweet everbearing crowns. I think I learned a lot from your 6 videos about strawberries. Previously I have tried to grow strawberries with not a lot of success. Now I know to cut the runners, water and feed a lot more, how close I can plant them and so much more. I really hope I have more luck this coming year. I really like to read other people"s comments and notices that you answer them all. Wow. I have never seen that before in all the videos I watch. 21 years ago, I bought 6 plants, 2 each of early, mid & late season fruits. Before I got them in the ground, my cat had mixed them up. Not knowing which was which, I didn't bother keeping the labels. Never mind, I brought a selection of plants with me when I moved 12 years ago, and now have so many that I could fill the allotment completely with them! I get fruit from early June till late July, although this morning I spotted some more ripening. (Though I doubt if the blackbird will share them with me, now the cover is off the fruit cage!) I do fill out the season with alpine strawberries, as these also freeze well, giving my winter fruit salad a summer lift.

I just did my winter 'renovation' of my strawberries and ended up with two wheelbarrows full of rooted runners, I make a point of replacing about 1/3 of the established plants each year as few strawberries will bear well for more than 3 years.

Symphony has lovely big berries with lovely flavour. I grow mine in deep, discarded fish containers. They are easy to drill for drainage. I then sit them on trestles. This stops the slugs, A bit of net over the top keeps birds off. All I need is sun. Unlike rest of UK, this corner of Scotland has had a vert wet, cool summer.

Thank you for another great and informative video Ben . If I only had room to grow one variety it would be Mara Du Bois which is an ever bearing variety. It is a relatively small shorter leafed plant and it produces strawberries for months. Yes the early ones are lovely but have a short cropping season. Mara De Bois keeps going until the first frosts and I am still picking a tray full every other day and the plants are full of flowers. The sizes of them vary but I don’t mind. They are sweet and continuous. I know this is pretty unbelievable but one of this years runners has flowered and produced some fruit and it hasn’t even rooted yet!

Still potting on runners from my “found” Gariguette plant and really looking forward to a few fruits in 2023. I appreciate that these aren’t for everyone giving just one crop per year but to us the exceptional flavour makes them worthwhile; also the few retailers selling these strawberries in the UK charge huge premiums. First rooted plants are in their new pots fitted to the sides of our “catio” (out of reach of felines). I probably have enough plants on their way now so will start to cut future runners from the now huge parent plant so that it can focus on its own growing (!) in the weeks left before autumn. Much much carefully directed watering needed during these days of 30c+ but with a very small garden we grow lots of things in pots so the same applies to them all. Looking forward to the video on currants, this was our first year with blackcurrants in pots and they did well until a sudden aphid attack caused one to drop a large part of its fruit. The other gave well though and blackcurrants are probably my favourite fruit, if not raspberries, then there are big fat sweet gooseberries……

@wcndave
@wcndave Год назад
I've had very mixed results with container over-wintering strategy. I put them in my garage one year, as other's here do, and even with some watering, they just all died. I then left them out and with rain/cold they were in blocks of ice, and actually survived fine, however new plants didn't.... I'm still trying to figure this one out.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Год назад
Hi Mark. Here in the UK they just stay out in pots all winter. If winters are very severe, you could move the into a greenhouse or cold frame - somewhere still cold but a little more protected. Keep plants lightly moist. But in most climates outside is fine.

Last year my Dad took my kids to Home Depot and bought them 8 of the 6 packs of strawberries(only 4.98 each). 4 of them are june bearing and 4 are everbearing. I planted them for the kids last year and this year we had to build bigger strawberry beds. I just let the runners go last year and when I put them in their new permanent bed I planted 175 strawberry plants. There rest (oh yes there were many many more) had to be given to friends and family. This year, I will snip the runners. The point is if you start with just a few cheap ones you can get overloaded with them in a short time. I did use straw for a cover and just moved the straw and pushed a few runners in the dirt. There was a bed that I never did that with and they just grew right into the straw and rooted in the dirt beneath. I live in California so I just left them all winter and only moved them to the new bed in the middle of February. The roots were 7 and 8 inches long.

We have some variety of red strawberry that was a volunteer, so we don't know what type it is. We also bought some heirloom white alpine strawberry seeds. Alas only one sprouted but it is doing really well.. The berries are not only white but they are small and have a lovely mild and sweet flavor. The alpines need to be taken out of the greenhouse in the summer or it will get too hot. But the red ones love the hothouse. We have a mild climate so they never die back, they just produce much less in winter.

The alpine white strawberries sound intriguing.

Thanks for your videos it's great to see someone who is actually trying to help people because we are going backwards in the UK as people forget about the garden moaning and groaning about current government doesn't help we as people must learn from the past in ww2 people grew and maintained a pig and chickens for meat and eggs and they shared among others to make sure the community was feed people today just wind me up we must adopt the Chinese method of getting things done ourselves I am a South African and UK ruled the waves but now its a joke people must wake up but anyway I am just one person

How would I do runners with hanging baskets? Do I need to put the baskets on the ground and then root them?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Год назад
Yes, that would be the best way to do it.

Thank you for the detailed planting, Ben. Super cool. What is your planting zone? I am planting at 9a which was 8b until last year as USDA changed the zones. Currently, we have some Albion, Hood, Ft. Laramie, Whopper, Seascape, Eclair, and Alpine strawberries. Some are young plants and others are bareroot. Do bareroot plants bear fruit the first year?

I’m in zone 8. Bareroot plants can bear fruit on their first year, especially if they’re a good size when planted.

Do you have to do anything special for the winter for the ones in the ground?

Cut back old foliage and then, if it's really cold for weeks on end (frozen soil etc) perhaps cover the area with straw or similar to insulate them from the worst of the chill.

Just starting growing berries this week in Ontario Canada raspberries , blue berries and of course strawberries. I trimmed off the majority of my runners on my strawberries. I have four runners in small pots to try to propagate new plants. Your videos have answered almost all my questions. Just wondering about fall and winter as winter here are usually harsh. Do I need to protect my berry plants in any way or will they be fine on thier own.

Strawberries are hardy down to about zone 5, so should be fine as they are in most of Ontario, but if they're in pots I would consider bringing them into a more sheltered area just to help them through the hardest of the cold.

Ben, I live in the US in zone 8 and was wondering, can I also go by your channel on when to plant ect along with you. or is my zone 8 totally different from your own....I enjoy your channel and have learned so much but I want to make sure what I plant and when is not going to fail on me.

Our climates are similar in that we have much the same first and last frost dates. But your winters may (or may not) be colder and your summers are likely warmer. But you can broadly go along with what I suggest. The Pacific Northwest has an almost identical climate to mine, just warmer in summer.

I love you gorgeous plants! I have four small plants in pots but they yielded no berries at all! What am I doing wrong?

Check out our other videos on strawberries which offer more growing guidance. But be sure to keep plants watered and fed (with a tomato feed, once plants start to flower). Give them a sunny spot to encourage those blooms.

Didn’t get any strawberries this year but it’s my first year and I didn’t expect any. Plus it was crazy hot. Going to have to find a better spot for them. They’re in containers in full sun and they seem to be having a rough time - still alive, producing runners, but not a lot of full growth. Hopefully now that it’s cooled down, they’ll grow out a bit before it gets too cold. Gotta figure out how to make sure they live through the winter. (7A here - first frost Oct 15)

I grow in zone 9 - really hot summers - and find they do great with quite a bit of shade. Mine are shaded by wildflowers and roses I grow in the same bed. They produce well, although they stop for awhile in the hottest part of the summer, but pick up again in the fall.
@GrowVeg

They can cope with quite a bit of cold, so may just need moving to a more sheltered spot to avoid the very worst of the winter cold.

Hi Ben, my strawberries are older and producing small fruit, I am thinking I need to start over with fresh stock, I have tried growing the pups but they produced small fruit as well. What do you think? I have kept them watered fed & mulched but still tiny fruit. Thankyou.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Год назад
Try planting them into a fresh area of soil. It may be that the soil is tired and a new patch of ground that hasn't grown strawberries recently would suit them better - in full sun, mulched and watered as before.
