Topic: attenuation spectrum analyzer
Here I break down the Math of calculating attenuation for your spectrum analyzer (Ham Radio) and then I give you the shortcut method that no one taught you.

I like the solid consistent technical content on this channel. Practical technical information and pro tips. No "unboxings," no awkward videos of an old rag chewer sitting in his shack making "contacts," no weird excursions to the hinterlands seeing how many "fars" his HT has. And most importantly, no BS'ing around with vain YT personality pretense. As an old boomer electrical engineer whose main interest in amateur radio is the tinkering aspect, this channel is pretty much the only YT ham content I follow anymore.

Additionally spectral purity should also be check across the band. That test is usually part of the test data that is sent to the FCC for type acceptance of the unit. 73

great info ! that why I like the tina SA ULTRA . you can add external gain to measurement . I have had a new attenuator from Amazon bad out of package and sent it back. was out of stock and got refund and got a different one. I have seen some go bad. so best to test on a VNA. how I knew a new one was bad. for hi power measurement a line tap is needed and proper dummy load. I use a Byrd 43 line section with BNC tap sample slug into 2.5 Kw 50 ohm dummy load. when buying attenuators look at spec on them. DB Atten. and rated power also the ohms. they make 50 and 75 ohm ones. 73's

This is a great point. I have had 75 ohms ones in my bags before. I made it a point to mark them, or throw them out; I don't remember which :)

@@HAMRADIODUDE 75 ohm ones are for CATV or AV/audio work.

I think I watched this video maybe 20 times trying to figure out the math... stupid windows calculator is worthless for 10log and had to use google sheets for the math LOL. Now my brain hurts! I think I got it, but maybe not! So what your telling me for 5W radio I need a 36.99 dBm or a 56.2 dBm attenuator? I'm so confused.

Hey there. First, convert your actual output power from watts to dBm. 5w = 36.99 dBm. Then we need to attenuate according to Part 97.307 (e) : The mean power of any spurious emission from a station transmitter or external RF power amplifier transmitting on a frequency between 30-225 MHz must be at least 60 dB below the mean power of the fundamental. For a transmitter having a mean power of 25 W or less, the mean power of any spurious emission supplied to the antenna transmission line must not exceed 25 µW and must be at least 40 dB below the mean power of the fundamental emission, but need not be reduced below the power of 10 µW. A transmitter built before April 15, 1977, or first marketed before January 1, 1978, is exempt from this requirement.. This means we need 25uW converted to dBm --16.02dBm. But not to exceed 10uW: -20dBm Inverse the -16.02 (for my shortcut method). and Inverse the -20dBm 36.99 + 16.02 = 53.01 dBm. 36.99+20 = 56.99 dBm So typically you can get a 40dBm attenuator or a 50 dBm attenuator and use your analyzer for the difference in attenuation. For example, if I have 50dBm of attenuation and i need 3dBm, I could add it from the analyzer. Cheers.
