How I use leukotape to treat blisters when I’m backpacking.
I can't remember where I learned the label tip... might have been Jupiter.

That stuff is magic. End of story, just try it, it works. I put it on the morning of my hike and only replace it if it gets a wrinkle, but it lasts for days. Thanks for sharing this Kane.

I hadn’t thought of precutting shapes so that they are easier to put on quickly. This is such a great idea. Thank you for all of the great content!

On shipping labels! That's the key. Brilliant and thank you

I use the brown (non-stick) cooking paper that is available from any supermarket if I dont have any backing paper lying around. Also pre-cut to severl shapes. works realy well and minimises stopage time.

Knew exactly what you were going to suggest before I clicked. I’ve been doing this for years as well! When prevention fails, being able to simply peel and apply a strip of leukotape can really save the day!

I do the same, but I heard about an even more expert tool, which is lambs wool. When you start to get a hot spot, you just put a small piece of that wool into your sock in that spot and it will create an extra padding which works super well, supposedly. The brand I am referring to is Premier Lambs Wool (yellow and red package).

Great idea with the label backing. I wrapped a section of Leukotape around a pen and when I finally needed it one day (years later), it was a gooey mess trying to unroll it.

Not sure if it’s widely available in the US and Canada, but they also produce a version called Leukosilk that I sometimes like even better. It’s usually an inch wide, and a white bandaid medical tape material that is thinner and softer. But also less sticky to your skin and socks, which means it comes off faster and can be a disadvantage, but also helps to care for wounds. I‘ve sometimes even used that preventatively applying some strips to usual spots in the morning especially on day hikes, or before the major descent of the day. Sometimes multiple strips overlapping each other. E.g. I got no significant blisters thanks to Leukosilk when hiking from Germany to Italy across the Alps, and it saved me when I did get painful ones on top of my toenails on a trip across Spain. Leukotape is a bit better on the heel or bottom of the foot where you need more cushion.

Great idea to prep tape in advance, I'll be adding a couple to my medical pouch. Personally if I get blisters they are usually on the back of my heal, seems I'm always managing a small heal lift, whenever I'm going on a longer hike or multi day I always tape both heals in advance, problem solved :) Thanks again Kane, keep them coming

Faffing around with tape in the field is a pain. This makes life easy! Especially in winter - ski boots can really mess your feet up

Medic Hacks: as stated, address hotspots early! take a small tube of 0.35oz Aquaphor, excellent for chafing & hotspots. Soap & water clean, a small dot, cover with/ bandaid, then Leukotape. Also toe socks help reduce toe blisters. Before placing socks, coat feet in a thin coat of aquaphor or Glide, this also helps.

Just got my first pair of toe socks-LOVE THEM!!👍🏼. I’ve also used a bit of Glide on my toes and it’s fantastic stuff. I haven’t had blisters in ages!

Thats's the kind of tip I really like. Some will customized the patch at the moment they need one. So will do like suggested in your video. Whatever we'll do, this still remains a very good tip. Well done and thank you for making that video!

Great tips! Always hard pealing the leukotape off trekking poles. It works but a pita to get off. Like the idea of pre-assembled pads. The trick is to pre-treat at the start of a hike. I know where my blisters develop so I put lambs wool or mole skin underneath the lukotape and rarely get blisters no matter how conditioned my feet are. Plus I wear a thin poly liner sock with a high quality merlino wool outer sock. Works well for me. Oh. Don’t forget the Super Feet inserts.

here I am trying to shove this enormous roll of tape into my FAK lol I think I might be trying the make-your-own-mini-roll and pre-cut shapes method, the shipping label or wax paper backing idea is brilliant, thank you!

Zinc oxide tape does the same and a bit cheaper. If you are someone prone to blisters, tape up your fit before you head out.

Good point, I forgot to mention that. I pre tape pretty often just to prevent anything from starting and getting out of hand.

I always put the tape on vulnerable areas on my feet before a long hike. Stops blisters from happening to begin with.

100% pre-taping is the way to go if you know certain areas are prone to blisters.

I use superglue for cuts but tape hurts when the hairs on the bod get ripped off. However I do have it in my first aid kit.

Leukotape stops blisters while hiking for me, but after I remove it from the trip it absolutely destroys my skin from the adhesive. Leaves my skin irritated & peeling. I'm researching some other tape options with less adhesive I think.

I’m sure there are other kinds of tape that work well. Someone mentioned kinesio tape in the comments. Regardless what you use, pre cutting is saves a ton of time and fussing around.

Kane, can you please provide an example of when you use the thin strips? I’m thinking they are possibly used like steri strips to help with wound closure like in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-leJk1z7IqNs.htmlsi=93DKHPy6E02TdkRW

Oops your msg got held for review - must have been the link. Sometimes I get a blister on the inside of my little toe. The strips let me get a wrap around the digit. But yes you could do all kinds of things to built makeshift butterfly closures. I carry a few of them regardless.
