21:43 I belong to Khushab, Punjab. In the traditional marriages here, there is no concept of Barat. Groom side feeds the guests at home, after which they go to bride's house for rukhsati where they are mostly served Tea/ Jalebi thus severly reducing the economic burden on Bride's side. One more tradition is that there is no concept of dowry. Groom buys all the stuff for the house. This is rare occurring now a days though. I wonder if these traditions have similar roots.

The question of ownership of property and mode of inheritence has been largely ignored in your talk. The family has passed through various stages of fevelopment. Monogamy has its root in the fact that male had to ensure inheritance to only his offsprings which😮 required a well defined father. The process is described in depth by ENGELS in his book " Origin of Family, Private Property and State". I wish you come back for another talk taking this into account.

Very insightful. The security dimension in low production/fertility areas (Arabia, Africa) which arises from the conflict over scarcely available resources leads to males spending most time in forming alliances strategizing and warfare to ensure safety of their tribes. Which automatically shifts the burden of provision on females. Also, large families (numeric superiority) and alliances formed through marriage comes handy. One can conclude, abundance of resources and role of modern governments in security is a factor in formation of nuclear families.

I have learnt a lot from this logical explanation. I want to add one another factor for this system is that in the past war would fought through man force so a great number of men would die, due to which large number of women would get widowed or proportionality of men vs women get affected so men would preferred polygamy.

The book under discussion presents following views Hoeing Farming ~ Polygamous Relations ~ No concept of Pardah. Ploughing Farming ~ Monogamous Relations ~ Pardah practiced. Isn't it conflicting that Islamic society (Arabs initially) practiced polygamy and at the same time started practicing pardah? I was just curious about this. Would love to hear your explanation..

Dr Sahib, it is really an insightful vedio. Nevertheless, I believe Islam though permit polygamy (polygyny) with certain provisions but doesn't encourage it at all. Rather it discourages it and promotes monogamy. The Quran clearly says; Oh Muslims you may have as many as four wives provided you treat them equally which you cannot. So by telling the believers that they cannot treat all wives equally, Islam is promotes monogamy.

An interesting and unique perspective! I've always understood this issue in historic context under which the ruling or the verses were revealed. In this case, we're told these verses were revealed straight after the battle of uhud where Muslims suffered heavy losses and upon their return there was an issue of who would look after the widows of those who lost their lives. Hence the ruling came to permit a married man to have multiple wives to give those widows a roof over their heads and support. In other words, a situation arose, and we were given a ruling to manage that situation. And this is the point. The law (in this case of marrying only one woman) itself is not the end. This law, like any law, can be changed or broken to 'manage' a situation! Another example is that of prohibition of eating the pork, a law that can also be broken if a certain situation arises (ie you can consume pork to save your life if nothing else was available). Therefore it implied that sustenance and the sanctity of life was more important than adherence to the law!. Hence we can see that throughout the Quranic, there is not a single legal ruling which we are not allowed to break. So this is point, that Islam is teaching us how to become a good 'situational managers'. This understanding is a million miles from the traditional mindsets where the masses are brain washed, and even brain numbed to stop thinking for themselves to fine a fix for a given situation but instead seek a 'ready-made' (often flawed) answers for every little issue, from the religious authorities. You've added another historic perspective to this issue, which I'm happy to accept and have no problem in accepting it because you've supplied ample rational arguments in its support. There may be many many psychological, biological, historic, cultural and economical lenses through which this issue or any other issue can be observed in a given time in history or a given situation or circumstance faced, and the human reaction to it can be different every time. The moral of the story being, the wisdom to find a path through a situation or circumstance is more important than adherence to the rulings itself.

It is just like a Parallex View which Zizek applied to science, philosophy and politics... We can interpret polygamy economically, religiously, biologically as well as politically. A great insight into polygamy by the author. Thank you, dear Sir 🌹

In addition to what you said. When I was in first year of college. I had the same question and I asked a cleric about it. He said, a lot of battles were fought during those times. The economy was trade oriented in Hejaz. The default culture was to have a lot of women in pre-islamic era without any regards of their rights. Here 2 examples of influential woomen but for opposite spectrum are necessary: of Khadija and HInda. Muslims in influential positions, generally held the first marriage for long and opted for multiple marraiges to strenghten relationships and form bonds. Example: Khadija, Fatima, Asma bint Umais, Zaynab bint Maz'un, Aisha, Hafsa, Maria etc Muslims were attacked left right and center. Hence, widows had the option to get into marraiges as well. Asma bint Umais, Sawdah bint Zam’a etc 3rd point is what you have mentioned.

Very informative from the origins of polygamy point of view but limited from the Islamic point of view other than it being a hangover from preislamic arabian society. One important reason for Islam allowing it was the social security safety net aspect. Males would die earlier/ younger due to wars and infections from injuries sustained during war and work. Marrying widows, as were most of prophet Muhammad's wives, provided this respectable social safety net.

Dear Taimor, You misunderstood the book's lesson. The real reason women accepted polygamy was the dual burden of home and field work, not economic factors. In modern Western society, women often juggle jobs and domestic responsibilities, especially single parents. The early 20th-century feminist movement pushed women into the workforce, but this has increased their burden, benefiting employers rather than women. This shift has weakened the family unit, leading to fewer marriages and a more materialistic society focused on money rather than family.

One of the primary motivators of early Muslim conquests was the acquisition of maal-e-ghaneemat and female slaves from the tribes conquered. There wasn’t a lot of agriculture in 7th century Arabia. Tolerating multiple wives is not in any woman’s “Fitrat”.

Rejection of Islam by Baba Sahib Ambedicar for it having allowed polygyny is not understandable. Buddhists regard marriage as a secular affair and each Buddhist society thus has its own stance on polygamy. Some countries like Thailand legally recognise polygamy whereas Myanmar disallows it.

I appreciate the effort but variables to predict monogamy or polygamy are not only economical but also biological , personal preferences and circumstances. As from lecture its simple that for monogamy Economical power should be equal amongs genders. And for monogamy, males should have most of economical power. Too simplified.
