The economic significance of the Vredefort impact structure
Matthew Huber is a senior lecturer at the University of the Free State.
Experienced Geology instructor with 5 years of experience teaching at the university level. Distinguished record of publication in international academic journals. Commitment to helping university students develop their full potential in their studies. Strong philosophy of teaching, and knowledge of many different methods to motivate students to develop their expertise. Dedicated partner to university programs and outreach events that help promote learning and support the community.
Research:
Awarded Y rating from National Research Foundation. Of 17 peer reviewed papers published in ISIaccredited journals, 1 appears in the top-ranked geology journal (Geology, Q1, 1/47), 2 appear in other first-quartile journals (Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, Q1, 10/84; Lithos, Q1, 4/185), 9 appear in second-quartile journals (Meteoritics and Planetary Science, Q2, 26/85; Bulletin of Volcanology, Q2, 69/190; Journal of Petrology, Q2, 24/84), 1 appears in a Q3 journal (Astronomical Notes, Q3, 45/66) and 4 appear in a fourth-quartile journal (South African Journal of Geology, Q4, 41/47). Additionally, 2 comments have appeared in journals. Regularly attends local and international conferences. Currently, 6 manuscripts are submitted for peer review process in accredited journals.
Teaching:
Taught at university level for 4 years at undergraduate and Honours levels, and supervised students on numerous field trips to relevant geological locations and mines around South Africa. Currently in competition for a UFS Learning and Teaching Award. Currently supervising two Master’s students and four Honours student research projects. Seven Honours students successfully completed research projects, two with distinctions. Co-supervised a doctoral candidate.
Community Service:
At the international level, reviewed manuscripts and served as editor, as well as organizing a session for a conference. At the university level, organized the weekly departmental lecture series (Geotalks), organized short courses for Honours students, and organized for the transference of samples and drill core from South African mines to UFS. At the local level, gave numerous public lectures concerning scientific topics at a variety of venues, and have given radio and newspaper interviews regarding scientific topics.
