This scene still disturbs me. The way it's done captures the terror of this situation.

This is honestly one of the scariest scenes of any film I've ever seen!

Honestly, I’d say what really makes this scene is the final moments directly after. It gives the audience a brief moment to lament the loss of Stephen and sets the tone for the significantly darker direction the movie takes from this point on. Chills!

I live in the country. This scene is the reason I'm afraid to go in the forest alone. As a kid, this scene actually freaked me out more than any other "unrealistic" horror/disturbing movie scene. Truly an underrated movie.

I will admit, this scene stuck with me more than any horror movie death, except maybe Jaws when I was little... Don't F with nature.

This scene gave me nightmares for the rest of my life, and a very real fear of bears and being eaten alive. The part when the bear takes one more savage tear at Steve's limp body and he stops screaming still sends shivers down my spine. Too real, man. Fuck that shit. FUCK that!!!!

This is more terrifying to me than being killed by another person. Being killed like this is so horrific that it really keeps me awake at night when I want to sleep if I think about it, the scene has stayed with me since the movie came out. I have to stop myself from thinking about it because it overtakes me no matter where I am or who I'm with or what I'm doing.

This scene turned me ice cold when I saw it on TV years back, but it made the bear even more frightening and nightmarish for the scenes that followed, it was the right thing to include it in the film.

I saw this movie when i was 6 years old. It gave me nightmares and nights waking up in cold sweats well into my teenage years. I am now 22 and i'm still a bit scared (one might say on edge haha) to watch these small snippets. Very powerful movie and also a perfect example of how influential great cinema is and by all accord the human brain and a young mind is as well from remembering it so vividly. Amazing movie that ill never watch again.

I am 20 years old right now and I remember seeing this movie when I was much younger and this scene scared the absolute hell out of me, anything to do with being attack by a forced that has no mercy and physically overpowers easily is very scary. This and the first shark attack in the original Jaws, and the gargoyle attack scene in Tales from the crypt stuck in my head as a child.

I think the bear was there the whole time when it was raining, lead by the smell of blood, watching them, when Stephen see's it, the bear noticed and went for it.

Please, does anybody know how this scene was shoted? I know they are film tricks but I'm tense all the time when I see this scene. Was Harold Perrineau allright? Terrible momment, but it was really great played. I loved Stephen in this movie.

Yeah I think he still had all his limbs after the movie :P - just kidding. That's a terrific question. If you'd have asked this about the Revenant's bear attack, it would've been a pretty simple answer of: impeccable visual effects techniques and simulation.What I mean by that is today, you could literally give the bear any doll to toss around and on screen you could easily make that doll appear to be anyone you want. However, I am not sure whether or not such technologies and capabilities were around back in 1997. I'd say there was some kind of body swapping and camera trickery going on. Still, there's undoubtedly an incredible level of dexterity by both the filming crew and Bart the bear. In some movies the animal's owner was cleverly swapped and disguised for certain portions of the battle (as was the case with the tiger in Gladiator, and again Bart the bear in Legends of the Fall). Regardless, this scene is unquestionably a masterpiece.

Thank you for your answer and I agree. Bart played it great, I saw him in several movies. He had to be an amazing animal actor.

They didn't have any weapons . Hopkins tried to distract the bear in a panic. That was actually almost a suicide attempt. They were helpless against an animal of this strength and size. İn this situation the best thing to do is for the survivors to run because otherwise all you're doing is giving the predator an extra meal.

@wk19781
@wk19781 8 лет назад
True. But I personally don't think they should've even attempted any rescue efforts in this situation. Two unarmed and unprepared men against an angry adult Kodiak is a guaranteed win for the bear. Did you watch my other clip on how Hopkins ended up killing the bear? He did it without guns but it took epic planning. They actually went looking for the bear to kill him. Here, the bear took them by surprise. They were absolutely no match against that bear in this scene. Guarantee you if this were real and Hopkins came any closer he would've lost his life too. You gotta know when to run.

He died first because he wasn't a main character. He could've been white and still would've died first. Who did you expect to die first? Alec Baldwin or Anthony Hopkins? If the movie had Denzel Washington in it he would not have died first.
@FragileBitch
@FragileBitch 7 лет назад
Actually, None at all. I mean, Everything seem to going nice and smooth until birds hit the propeller and things start to go to hell from that point on. Even that I still didn't expect to see any of trio to be a goner at all. Especially not with this terrible manner kind of death.
