I feel like this is EXACTLY what I needed to know right now. I have been steadily improving my editing skills but haven't built up a strong portfolio or connections in the industry. I have felt pretty lost on how to best increase my chances of making this my actual career. This video was incredibly clarifying for me and I would love to see more career oriented videos from you guys in the future, perhaps covering the different niches of film, tv, and corporate editing and how they vary in terms of what employers look for when hiring.

At the risk of repeating myself, this is another amazing pro level training video. I'd like to try an experiment where someone with absolutely not editing experience listens to all or most of your free videos and takes absolutely NO other training. I'm sure this person who be in the top percentile of the editing world. Now, if they took ANY one of your longer programs, they would be at the top of the absolute top editing world. Thanks again for this amazing video.

Just a warning that your cold email should be much more specific and concise about what you like in their work, how your skills (or budding skills) apply, and specific what you want to discuss. Warning: the phrase "pick your brain" is toxic to industry folk, especially the busier they are. They aren't your free film school. So ask in a different way.

This is so helpful, thank you, I'm an aspiring editor with 13 years of online video experience and now I want to cement myself as a creative narrative editor. My mentor has given me a ton of production companies to email about Running work but as you said, I find these emails so hit and miss it puts me off even starting to write, but now I understand it's a numbers game as well as crafting the right tone in the email which you showed us here. Thank you so much for this and the spreadsheet tip, it's going to be so useful, thank you. I'll let you know how I go in six months time from following your tips. My best wishes. 🙌🏼

Great video! I would be really interested in the tools you used to make this video? As an example, I'm assuming you used Premier to edit this video. I can tell you did a voice-over to animated text. Was that a type of mogurt or other educational software that you used for the animated text, bullet points, etc. Knowing how you put those into your timeline and the tools used would be super helpful, especially for those of us maybe wanting to put together a course. Thanks again!!!
@FilmEditingPro
@FilmEditingPro 4 года назад
Thanks, John! We used Premiere on this particular video but we also use Avid Media Composer - it really depends on the project. We used Adobe Audition to record the VO with an Audio Technica ATR2100 Cardioid mic and After Effects and Photoshop to create all the graphics. If you're creating your own training, the most important thing to get right is the script, being sure that you jot down what your coverage will be for each section of the piece (on camera personality, stock footage, film footage, specific graphics, screen capture, etc. Be sure to think about what would be most useful for the viewer to be seeing at each moment to clarify the points being made and help with their understanding of the topic, along with keeping things visually engaging and interesting to watch.

If I want to create an editing reel, but I'm not a cinematographer and my footage isn't the "professional" looking footage I'd want. I have Envato Elements subscription...would it be misleading if I download stock footage clips I like, that fit my style and jobs I'm going after? I don't want to be misleading, but if it's an editing reel...should I be judged more off of style/flow/editing skill? What are your guys thoughts/input? Anyone have any experience doing this?
@FilmEditingPro
@FilmEditingPro 3 года назад
Hi Scotty - your idea of editing stock footage is great. As long as you credit the footage and don’t claim to have filmed it you’ll be in good shape. If you can manage to tell a mini visual story and make stock shots interesting with music and sound design, you’ll go a long way in demonstrating your editing skills. Get cutting! 👍🎬
