RNH in 2011 was between him and another player who ended up playing for Edmonton anyway. McDavid in 2015 was Mcdavid so yknow. Yakupov in 2012 was a consensus first overall pick, but still no doubt the worst first overall pick in history. Any other team would have made the same pick though, and the guy was lazy and uncoachable so he was going to be a huge bust for whoever drafted him. He only got 25 more points in 2 years with 2 teams before going back to Russia, that one wasn't on the Oilers. My whole point here is, the Oilers aren't unsuccessful because of drafting. It's because of poor depth level player development, unstable coaching, not giving a shit about goaltending as a franchise value, and bloated contracts eating at their cap. The St Louis cup run is historic in many ways and will always be remembered and celebrated simply because what happened was so rare. To expect another team to pull off such a feat is a pipe dream to say the least.
