@@thedarkmoonman For further exploration in a modern day revelation I would suggest that you check out the RU-vid channel Guardian of Orion and get the free e-book which goes a long way in explaining wisdom which is needed on the Path of Mastery
I really appreciate your channel. Instead of telling us how to do "magic", like some of those RU-vid mages like to do, you inform us in a scolary manner about the subject. Not pretending to summon demons or creating the philosophers stone but real information about the different books, scrolls or papyrus and their hystory. Thanks.
I'm all about practicing occultism (etc.) in whatever way is edifying but this channel is academic. However, I hope a whole spectrum of people could find the information useful.
@@TheEsotericaChannel practicing occultisme is a really personal experience which is different for everybody. The history behind the texts is something I was looking for. I found that here and it inspired me to take some new staps in my study.
You are very wise my friend . I took many years studying the academic background on these arts before starting the practice. Many gods go through changes over the centuries and knowing the beginnings of them is important. Like pazuzu the demon that attacked Linda blair's character in the exorcist. Highly unlikely pazuzu would attack little girls as it was pazuzu who protected children before hollywood got their hands on this entity. And also what started as people saying a few words to their daemons before leaving the house that changed to people praying to demons before leaving the house. Here people started to see this go from an internal to what was thought of as an external power . The understanding of how systems changed over history tells us much about the bare bones of the system at its core.
@@TheEsotericaChannel I'm actually curious what your particular religious culture thinks about your occult interest. Pretty much know what christians and muslims think ...but never had insight into Jewish perspective on this .
In Sydney we refer to Ibises as 'bin chickens', because they have a reputation as urban scavengers. Sadly this is because of the destruction of their natural habitat, but I am very fond of them nonetheless - not least because of their association with Thoth/Hermes. As an underpaid academic, they remind me that one can be both a scholar AND a bin chicken. Another fascinating video. Thank you Dr. Sledge.
Your description and examination of the writings and history of esoteric matters in a scholastic way is exceptional and much appreciated. Your channels aim to educate the viewers on the historic nature of esoterism is a more relatable way for people in the modern era. 🙏
I can’t express how grateful I am for you doing this. I am just in awe of all the connections and synchronicities in stumbling onto this channel. Thank you
Absolutely love your channel and just subscribed. Been doing a lot of reading from the various Hermitic texts and I am currently reading the likely botched translation of the book of the dead, but it's nice to occasionally take a break from page turning to just listen to the wisdom others have already uncovered with their own research. Thanks for the fascinating and informative videos!
I'm studying Coptic right now, once I have both Sahidic and Bohairic "mastered" I plan on diving into Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphics. I feel it's best to start with Coptic because it will allow me to get a clearer grasp on the workings of this interesting language.
Too bad it's being white washed as with all Afro Semites and Asiatic descents... the largest Coptic diaspora populations are in the United States, in Canada and in Australia.
Being that I, myself, am entirely uneducated on these matters, this will probably be a dumb question: Is there some reason you are starting with Middle Egyptian as opposed to Early Egyptian hieroglyphs? Wouldn't it make more sense to start at the beginning, chronologically? This is not meant to be a trolling or a shitty comment, btw. As stated, I am ignorant, just curious..
@@spacetimeworm All language courses in Egyptology start with Middle Egyptian, which is classic Egyptian, and then proceed to Old Egyptian, Late Egyptian, Coptic.
Great summary! I would add a few observations based on my recent reading of this book. A huge part of the difficulty of the text is that it is fragmentary even by ancient manuscript standards (I sang "lacuna, lacuna" to the tune of "Corinna, Corinna" at certain points). There are numerous instances of reference to the opening of the mouth ritual, or the underlying method of "Telesmatics." (Not sure if I coined that) aside from describing the initiation of the scribe. It is also clear that the hieroglyphs themselves were viewed as spiritually alive, and that much of the education of the scribe required learning to listen to the voice of each of them. Lastly, I doubt we will get much further into the connections to the Hermetica without discovering more of the related texts. 42 sounds about right. I hope they do turn up, and that someone has the nerve to publish _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Books of Thoth_.
Thank you. This may sound strange, but it's true. If you SING to the SUN of LOVE and THANKS, the SUN will answer you with stronger HEALING RAYS. It's miraculous, DIVINE. You can use any tune, just add your own words of LOVE and THANKS. The more you do, the more you will see, our LIFE GIVING, LIVING LIGHT. The SUN needs us, like we NEED the SUN. Please sing some LOVE. Thank you again. Wishing you LIGHT and LOVE always.
I was introduced to Hermeticism by a dear friend of mine who recently passed away. Although I have some knowledge of the Latin and Greek Classics, before meeting my friend, I wasn't entirely sure what the term "Hermetic" meant. (That's true, but also, I think, a good joke about the academic separation of a few ancient texts deemed "Classic" from all the rest.) I first came across your channel yesterday, and I've watched several of your videos on Hermeticism since then. Right at the very beginning of the first video I saw the volumes by Lynn Thorndike on the shelf behind you, which to me was a very hopeful sign of quality, and you haven't disappointed in the slightest. Then toward the end of that video I was thinking, Well, this guy's the bomb, but I still need some help sorting out the editions of the primary sources -- BUT YOU RECOMMEND EDITIONS OF THE PRIMARY SOURCES!!! On RU-vid no less! So I'll be working my way through some of the primary texts, in order of their linguistic difficulty for me: Latin first, because it's the easiest for me, then Greek, then... well, I guess, for me personally it's a tie for 3rd place between Armenian and Coptic and Hebrew and Arabic and Aramaic, and did I forget any? But yeah, I'll definitely let you know how that goes! I'm stoked! Amazon has shipped Festugière's edition of Asclepius!
I can't express enough the amazing resonances and singular brilliance of this episode from a year ago (!) that I had thought would also elude me intellectually as I attempt to grasp even the foundational concepts discussed and only just now played. As temerity and gall compelled, I began to play it in background, gasp, while neck deep in a mundane assigned real estate review chore, which I normally do not do, since office jazz/shamanic flute music can lull me. And Thoth has been and continues to be the most fascinating figure from Ancient Egypt! Every second of the episode had me pause desk work to watch it all and take it all in! Plus serendipities come to mind! A certain path to step onto with integrity and intrepidness. Hekat/Haket 🍺 raised to you, Doctor Justin Sledge! Soon half the full attention watch numbers will surely be mine! May 📜 scrolls of Thoth find you always! 📚 📖 ✍️ 🪨
What an absolute pleasure listening to a person with so much knowledge. I love to observe lectures presented by people who exist several (or several dozen..) levels above me in regard to any formal education on a subject. Usually, I have to replay every sentence, or every few sentences, to gain a full (fuller, yet sadly, eternally incomplete, if I'm honest) understanding of the material. I can't even imagine the myriad hours you must have spent just absorbed in these ancient, ethereal and magical worlds through your research, literally discovering the lost secrets of mankind and those of our universe. It's quite evident that one thing which makes your content so attractive to viewers is how passionate you are about the subject. It's always refreshing to see proof that people are capable of creating their livelihood from something they truly enjoy. Thank you Doctor J!!
Wow! Your site is so interesting. You are clear & easily followed & make connections I've often wondered about but didn't know enough about to resolve on my own. You help synthesize it all. You're also an honest academic I think & that's not always easily found. I'm sure you have seen enough to be able to unpack that statement. God bless you & your work.
Although some would say our souls are on thin ice delving into these subjects I truly feel this is mentally one of the safest places online right now. At least for me! I've had to filter out a LOT of semi toxic channels these last few days sadly - I think the algorithm thinks I'm looking for Jesus, lol. Thank you for providing a safe and cozy environment to delve into these subects in a neutral and scientific way! I will buy you a coffee (can't afford pre ww1 absinthe I'm afraid) as soon as the stars are right.. or my disability comes through more likely! :'D
GREAT stuff. Looking very forward to your unfolding of the Book of Coming Forth by Day ! Great dry humour. Beautiful, refined scholarly revelation in the nuance you share. Thank you so much ! Relatively new subscriber in Canada. Keep up the great work, you got me.
I think you are right Dr Sledge. Your description of the initiations of the book of Thoth sound very familiar to Golden Dawn, Rosicrusian and Free Masonic initiations. Well, Golden Dawn primarily since the officiating officers represent Egyptian deities. W. Westcott, a founder of the GD required new initiates to read the Corpus Hermeticum. He said that it would help the initiate of the 0=0 grade to comprehend the initiation ceremony. I believe that you and Westcott are correct.
@@randellhillspeaks753 do you have a recommended reading on this. I understood Enoch to be pure and actually spoke against the Nephilim and their practices.
Oh, and I doubt you don't already know it, but if so, check out the phenomenal podcast series "SHWEP" (Secret History of Western Esoteric Philosophy). It's a treasure and shouldn't you already be in contact with the guy, hit him up, I'm sure you'd have a lot to talk about!
I absolutely love your channel. Something that occurred to me while watching this was how interesting it would be to get your perspective on how a scholar in each of several periods would have viewed the pedigree of their literature. For example, would an early Hermetic scholar believe they could trace their wisdom to a literal Thoth? Did Medieval readers of the Zohar think of this wisdom as having come spontaneously from Rashbi, or perhaps as belonging to an older oral tradition? And did the movement of literary Humanism view themselves as unearthing ancient truths that would recycle some sort of golden age, or did they view their work more as literary archeology? I suppose you could call this a metaretrospective or something.
So very well done. You are able to understand perspectives of the human being through time as their consciousness of themselves were bound to their time period. It's more scientific than interpretation because essentially it's about unbiased observation. The way we are taught is that one can step into the past and become like them and rewrite things so that it conforms to truth. In other words, can we really write down things today and claim they will be truths 100 of years later? We cannot and if we understand we are attempting to look at it the same way in these hermetic text.
Thank you so much Dr. Sledge! You are fantastic!!!! I deeply enjoyed this video and I am more then grateful that you bring these ancient wisdom back on screen! Thank you and blessings to you! Mer, Dela
Ever since listening to Terrence McKenna talk about Alchemy and The Hermetic Tradition, I have become deeply fascinated. It’s a pleasure to watch your videos. Keep up the work!
I have watched enough of your videos to tell this channel is going to get VERY popular considering the obscure subject matter, you will be the esoteric guy... I love the variety, I love the approach, and I love how you break down complex subjects, though I am no beginner at this myself, I still get insight, even on topics I know well.
I love how deadpan you are 😂 I deeply appreciate your willingness to teach and share on here for us! I will donate and try to subscribe on Patreon, keep up the good fight 😊
Hello I found his speech on such a niche topic as the Book of Thoth really interesting. I wasn't hoping to find a job of this quality on youtube, so thank you so much. I look forward to your intervention on the Book to Get Out in the Light of Day. In the meantime, I offer you my best wishes for your research and I hope you will want to share it with us. Thank you
I really appreciate you introducing this subject This helps a lot And I like your personality and sense of humor I just started reading the book of Thoth And I find it difficult to grasp
Kind of amazed how few scholars on this subject point out the relevance of the depictions of the bodily energetic systems / organs (generally above the head) & form representation in general that each represents... Osiris having the Pericardium.. Anubis the dog representing the underworld / stomach..Thoth-Horus higher bird mind..(Quetzyl-Qoatle translating Bird-Serpent) Each having their powers fractally via decision making influence (Head-Thoth-Intellect, Heart-Isis/Osiris- Intuition, Gut-Anubis-Instinct) .. If these 3 main centers, each with it's own neurological capacity, are functioning coherently, there is harmony (measurable w biofeedback Heart Spectral Analysis, Heart-Brain coherence on modified EKG devices available from Heartmath Inst or Dan Winter.
Stopping in at 10:50 to say wow! Thanks for this knowlege, what a great format. You are a good teacher. And this information points to Jesus for me and any who will come i must add. Thank you again!
8:30 Thank you. You put my, "WtF", into words and semiotics, (😂😮😂), what I have struggled with the last few months. I am not the only one sometimes completely baffled and banging my head on my desk.
GREAT VID, DR. SLEDGE!!🙌 THOTH (Tjehuty) is also associated with the Divine Benben, he also stole 5 days from the other Neteru ( playing Kemet)., thus adding the final 5 days in our calendar
Hello. Love your work. Especially your sense of humor. Great way to make the work interesting to those who are not in love with it already. Which of course I am. I did notice that you pronounced Thoth in this episode as Toth, and the correct way in the episode of Who is Thoth. However, I liked your language explanation and considering how many things are written and in many different languages, as well as, writers it's no wonder how many different pronunciations there is. I'm sure you teach in an area far from me. Too bad I would love to pick your brain on what I don't know. I'm also trying to learn Hebrew and Aramaic to read ancient text in the original meaning. Translated text does not always come off the same.
i think it could be considered that, them talking about catching birds, is supposed to be understood as a hint to the possibility of traversing between "different plains of existence". spiritually, intellectually maybe even physically. looking at their legacy, it seems to be a thing these guys could have thought.
Thank you for your dedicated work and passion in the field of ancient manuscripts. As a layman who had three distinct experiences over a fifteen year process from a near death experience to a right living experience to a complete surrender event that would quite literally destroy me, I began my research after the last event and 18 years later am enriched further from the study of any literature that helps point to a larger picture. As this picture unfolds I can see two forces at work, one is dual in nature and encompasses the world of form and the other is singular and is the divine place. Interestingly, to traverse from one to the other requires us to be dependent on the will of the divine and lay down that which we have learned through the study of knowledge. Once we understand the knowledge and clearly see all the parts at work we choose the one in place of the two joyously. Its truly incredible to journey to this clarity as a kind of excitement comes over you that everything is covered.
I love your channel…..but I just wanted to add; after minute 7:00 you suggest that we should take the meaning of the ‘animal languages’ as symbolic. (If I understand you correctly.) I would argue that we cannot assume this, as seeing the world as symbolic is a fairly new idea. They likely were speaking of a ‘language’ they heard in their meditations and mystical states of awareness, as they saw everything as living. I think that when we suggest that their practices are ‘symbolic’, that we are adding our modern psychological based conceptual ideation to the thinking life of ancient peoples. It seems to great of an assumption to make, at least in my estimation.
@TP Not sure how to explain this briefly….those who practice going into mystical states of consciousness often speak of encountering ‘the group-soul consciousness’ of varying animal species. When spiritual practices are speaking of this, they aren’t talking about symbolism. The animals aren’t representing just qualities for them, they perceive themselves to be actually learning from the animal group-souls through meditation. If one believes that is possible or not, is a whole other subject. If the Egyptians stated that they learned hieroglyphs from the animals, as he said in the video, I would not assume that they meant that symbolically; but instead that they are telling us, that for them, they were having esoteric experiences with the group-souls of the animals, and that the animals are who they believe transmitted the hieroglyphic language to them. In our modern thinking we jump to the idea that things were symbolic very fast, and we do this even when people are expressing that something isn’t symbolic for them. We just have to be careful assuming that anyone saw their own practice as symbolic, as opposed to perceiving it as actual dialogue with other beings, which is often the case.
This may sound stupid, but I had a dream before that my cat talked to me using telepathy. He seemed sad and told me that I didn't play with him enough. After the dream I played with him a lot more.
@@hummingbird2254 You are just clairvoyant. It doesn’t sound stupid at all. We are all fairly clairvoyant. We just don’t have a lot of opportunity to practice or understand that outside of having to join groups that may not speak to us personally, or without having to adopt a spiritual outlook. You sound normal and likely gifted.
What a super puzzle - similar to figuring out high-end cryptography, my friend! Here's a symbolic guess: * Catching fish in the net = Gathering thoughts and concepts to be put into writing. Very interesting the correlation with Hermes The Thrice Great. As we have entered The Age of Aquarius, (The Water Bearer), answers and enlightenment are coming forth...
Well, the Greeco-Roman-Egyptian syncretismm held that Hermes and Thoth were one and the same. So perhaps Hermes the Thrice Great is referring to a God of Wisdom, specifically perhaps Thoth, rather than a person. In fact, they also believed the gods ruled Egypt as Pharoahs before the Old Kingdom, so it's possible any description of him speaking to people and just wandering about is referring to that belief in his rule at some time in the past.
The mystic books including the "original" bible were written in a manner to exclude the unworthy. This would include symbolism and allegory, for example the temple of darkness is the meditative state, the Baboon basks in the light of the sunrise, the Ibis inhabits the water (heaven) and the earth. The process is the evolution of the consciousness or enlightenment or the coming forth whilst incorporeal from the slumber, the academic mind would struggle to decipher this context.
The association of the ibis with Thoth actually has more to do with papyri, as they would scour the marshes for food, themselves being rather obvious sights, and those who followed the ibis would find both food and more material for writing. Reducing water to an analogy for "heaven" loses much of the vital nuance.
It cannot be understood but through experience. The road to infinity is the road of stillness. It is the road of non-attachment, bondage. That being said, it cannot be spoken of with a result of understanding. The words are only pointers. One must walk the road themselves. Inner stillness, non reaction: are stepping stones to this magical discovery of infinite wisdom. This is the narrow gate Jesus spoke of. Jesus awoken to much of his wisdom while in Egypt.
😮 I think you may have just answered a question that came up during meditation almost a year ago when you were just talking about the chamber of darkness.
*Wow, Dr Justin Sledge I'm both fascinated & riveted by your videos on the arcane, bcz this type of knowledge transcends that of The Natural Sciences, viz a viz Mathematics, Biology, Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Philosophy etc., although I must admit that my knowledge on the esoteric is so minute that it does not even register on the Mathematical scale, but my insatiable curiosity & quest for such knowledge is my impetus, my catalyst.
