Gingko Tree in Jangsu-dong, Incheon, South Korea
The ginkgo or gingko (Ginkgo biloba L.) is a deciduous tree with leaves that turn deep yellow in autumn. It is popular to plant ginkgos in Buddhist temples and local Confucian schools in Korea.
This tree in Jangsu-dong is presumed to be about 800 years old. Local residents of this area used to hold rituals at this tree, every seventh and tenth lunar month, to pray for rich harvest and peace of the village. Other rituals were performed as well, to drive away misfortunes and epidemics in the area. The tree measures 30 m in height and 8.6 m in circumference.
