Currently the most powerful hall thruster produces thrust measured in single digit Newtons. There's quite a long way to go.

That's not as bad as it sound for long term travel, since there is no friction in space your speed will just accumulate infinitely.

There is already a number of comments about the title being click bait. The video should have been titled 'Improved Ion drives for spacecraft' with no mention of manned missions to Mars. SciShow Space is losing cred with this type of titling.

@@BIkaloss Well, let's do some very approximate maths, using Apollo 17 as a starting point. Apollo's launch mass is about 35t (19t fuel, 16t others). I think it's reasonable to say that a Mars vehicle will need about 40t for equipment and supplies, and another 20t for fuel (the mass reduction by better efficiency balanced out by longer mission duration and occasional need for quick acceleration -> chemical propulsion). To be honest I would say 60t is a very optimistic estimate. F=ma=mv/t. So if we take m=60000kg, v=3600m/s (delta V required for Hohmann Mars transfer), t=60 days=5184000s (180 days one-way, 60 for acceleration, 60 for coast, 60 for deceleration), you are looking at F≈40N. That's about 8x what's currently possible just to reach delta V, and the engine that produced 5.4N was huge. We haven't even considered the engineering challenges of miniaturising the engine. Point is, yeah it is not as bad as it sounds, but it's still very far from enough. Edit: did some fact checking and found it's 5.4N not 3.2N. Point still stands.

Hall thruster is definitely a kind of "ion thruster". But this special type relies on Hall effect.

For this thing? I'd recommend not to. I personally actually agree with saying that Hall thrusters are a type of "ion thruster", but many people who work in the field of electric propulsion actually use the term "ion engine" to refer specifically to Gridded Ion Engines (GIEs), which is not only a different technology but also a different principle (i.e. electrostatic). GIE and Hall thrusters are currently among the most popular technologies in electric propulsion (more or less), and if you want to talk about the Hall thruster with professionals, using the term "ion engine" would likely achieve the exact opposite of what you want - because they'll probably think you're talking about a GIE.

Fun fact: studied independently in US and Soviet Union. First developed into an efficient propulsion system in Soviet Union. USA built their version of the thruster after 1992 after visiting Russian laboratories.

I still think one of our big goals should be to get a base on the moon, where either people or robots could then construct the main craft. Then rather than having to bring so much fuel and metal into space, we get the people and things needed sent to the base over several flights. That way you'd need less thrust to escape the moon than you would the Earth.

Most of the people in the comments have been saying that we would be using to get off the launchpad, but in reality a better way to do this is to use a chemical thruster to get out of the atmosphere then use the ion thruster while in space

I am glad that we are talking about a real thrust system. The EM drive was a hyped farce. With with more therminal loss than anything and thrust so low that is was nearly all measurement error or a result of heat radiation.

Krypton can and it is used to fly HETs (Hall Effect Thruster), because Xenon is so expensive. The advantage in using Xenon is that Xe+ ions are heavier, which increases the thrust generated (or the change in momentum).

They should make a modular Hall Thrust engine and launch it into orbit to gain speed for some years. Then launch the transportation module with chemical thrust, catch up with the engine and go to Mars (or Titan, etc). In there, detach the transportation module for landing (the Hall Thrust remains in orbit) and do the same thing again to come back.

I feel like you kinda missed, one of the more fatal drawbacks, which is that they have trouble getting off the ground; mostly because they'd have to fight earth's gravity well, and atmosphere, to get out, while accelerating slow... That acceleration will probably be negated. However, for use, when you're already in space, they seem like a pretty sound solution; when humanity have figured out, how to deal the other problems it has.

I read that the reason it takes so long to reach those higher speeds, is due to the strength of the electromagnets and the speed the ions are then pushed out of the Thruster. I wonder if research into strengthening the anodes output, or maybe new materials would be good. They are already very efficient propulsion systems, if we can just increase the thrust the possibility could be endless

It takes so long to get up to speed because of the difference in spacecraft propulsion speed for different propulsion systems. Suppose though that various spacecraft with different propulsion systems were only used to temporarily accelerate pods on their way between planets, and then reused for the next, that way the transmission of materials could happen in stages at waypoints between Earth and Mars? That's how the first space pioneers will have to think.

The VASIMR ion drive is already running at 200 kw (though not putting out 200 kw of thrust) and has been test run in a vacuum chamber for more than two years. Putting a number of them on the upper stage of a chemical rocket capable of moving at (earth's) escape velocity could allow acceleration half way to Mars, until it was necessary to reverse thrust to slow down for entry into Mars atmosphere. Using this method it is possible to reach Mars in just 39 days according to the manufacturer of VASIMR.

There's no reason it can't be. It's useful for some tasks, just not tasks that require human transport. The other problem is if you use it to transport people (to Mars for example) how do you stop when you get there?

There are no numbers in this video but MPD thrusters seem more realistic as the next propulsion for human spaceflight. While not as fuel efficient, they provide more thrust. A demonstrator being on used on the ISS, plasma propulsion could be considered TRL7 now (hall thrusters in general: TRL9, hall thruster in the video: TRL4?)

I can already envision large and small aircrafts with a few of these, configured, similarly to how we make drones. Taking off vertically, as well being capable of flying directly to space.

Everyone is all hyped about putting a human on Mars, I'm more excited about having a Moon base > Moon city > Moon Space Port. Having people live on Mars is a bit of a stretch if we dont have people living on the Moon.

Back in the 50s aerospace engineers researched the possibility of using hydrogen bombs to send astronauts to other solar systems. It was called project Orion. The project was scrapped because of cost and the sheer impracticality of attempting interstellar missions with our current technology. However it is entirely possible to use a few thermonuclear bombs to give an extra boost of speed to a large spacecraft headed to Mars. The nukes could be launched separately from the ship with the astronauts on an existing space launch system such as the delta heavy on an intercepting course and detonated at exactly the right distance and location behind the main spacecraft to accelerate it towards Mars. Obviously the main spacecraft would have to be carefully designed to take advantage of a nuclear explosion to allow it to do this. However it is not impossible to build such a system. The nukes would have to be set off outside the Earth's magnetic field to avoid radiation entering the atmosphere. The nukes can be set off outside of the Earth's orbit so the solar wind blows all the radiation away from Earth and into interstellar space. If a supper volcano was about to explode and we had to evacuate our best and brightest from Earth to restart civilization on Mars. I think this is exactly how NASA would do it.

The maker of this video must do some research on Escape velocity of Earth. Must know how much velocity is required to escape from earth's gravitational pull if you want to go to space. The way you describe..they seem to be suitable for moving in space...but I doubt if it can achieve enough velocity to escape earth's gravity.

What am i missing, they use radioactive decay to generate heat to power generators to ionise gas to be used in Ion thrusters. Why not cut out all the middle men and use the radioactive decay as the exhaust, since the energy of accelerated ions cannot possibly be more than the energy of the radioactive decay particles. Also, couldn't photons be used to generate a small amount of thrust, over, say, decades.

A significant issue with almost all of these interplanetary propulsion systems is that, aside from the typically slow acceleration problem, all propulsion systems will require an equal (in terms of output and time) amount to decelerate prior to arrival at the destination. You spend as much time, effort and fuel slowing down as you do speeding up!

You need less fuel for slowing down. Because you have to speed up your slow-down fuel but you don't have to slow down you speed-up fuel (as it is already gone). :)

I wonder if the Hal thruster would benefit being huge with as many channels as you can fit into the area. Seeing as size isn't an issue once you're out of the gravity well of Earth. You could build a ferry that moves between Earth and Mars the size of some sci fi ships in orbit and then use a chemical, or nuclear burn thruster to get it the rest of the way out of the well, turn on the Hal's and off you go. Granted the ideal scenrio is to have them large enough to not need the chem or nuke fuel.

They appear to be a great alternative for maneuvering thrusters. Not sold on their ability to get us to Mars though. If I had my way.. I'd have a Lunar orbital construction dock, then build it as large as we need, fuel and all.

The problem with Ion thruster is that it requires a HUGE power plant to output acceptable thrust. Not sure if X3's specific impulse value tho

That's cute, but nuclear propulsion is far better. once we have the infrastructure on the moon built we could even make Orion drives. Think spacecraft with 250k people on board, with walls so thick we don't need to worry about radiation in space at all. Using antimatter eventually we could hit 10-20% the speed of light, and have enough energy at the other end to slow down. A Hall thruster might work in deep space probes, but people want to get there in the shortest amount of time. Hall thrusters are not going to provide that. Ten there was NERVA. Not something you would want to launch from Earth (unless you're Russian) but vastly better than chemical rockets and already tested. Build these types of drives on the moon and you circumvent the "launching nuclear materials" NIMBY issue. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NERVA

Everything you said involves circumventing safety rules put in place for good reason not to mention nuclear materials and apparatus necessary to cause a nuclear explosion are extremely heavy we don't send a lot of tungsten carbide into space for a reason

We aren't replacing orbital rockets with ion thrusters, just so you all know. The fuel we transport isn't just mass to accelerate, but energy to accelerate it is bundled in there too. I've had a half hour long chat with a guy who claimed electric thrusters will be the future of suborbital flight, great thrust to weight ratios, excellent specific impulse, but what killed the conversation was when I said, "that sounds amazing and very power hungry, how do we power it?"

Xenon is a noble gas, so it isn't corrosive or flammable. Far safer than most propellants.

I had an idea while watching this: chemical rockets are too fuel inefficient, electric propulsion is too slow to accelerate, but has anyone ever thought of combining the two? So, you use a burst from chemical rockets to get you started (possibly in a removable stage), then speed up your journey by coasting along with electric propulsion. I realise it's adding weight and complexity, but I'd be curious to see someone try the maths. Anyone know if this has been considered before?

i want to know how possible and helpful it would be to drill a hole in the moon and ships out of it by rail gun that would provide a reasonable starter speed for your spacecraft and if you kept it in line with the orbital plane of most objects in the solar system, it would only take a bit of post launch course correction to get your ship to any stellar body

There is something I do not understand. If Xe+ are ejected then that means that a negative charge will build up inside the engine. Isn't that problematic?

So the positively charged xenon gas exerts a force on the positively charged anode which causes electric repulsion which is the thrust the rocket.But wouldn’t the electrons attract the gas and decrease the thrust or is the quantity of negative charge negligible also the cathode would also attract the xenon gas so I guess a lot of these parts have to be electrically isolated.

The problem with ion engine is it can't move any vehicle inside earth gravity well, not even the engine itselves. Its thrust is too small to compete against earth gravity (plus friction). It means we still have to rely on chemical rockets to fling spaceship to orbit and only then we can use ion engine to deliver us to the target.

What about accelerating the ions to even higher speeds usong the same technology as the railgus? In the end if you cannot increase the mass, you can increase the speed for extra thrust.

A chemical rocket and ion thruster, or chemical rocket and photon rocket hybrids could be pretty efficient to their weight and size.. Once a week 60 second burn for example could be pretty nice booster for a ship on long trip.

Getting to and from Mars without refueling is the problem. Once you get into the vacuum of space you just let your momentum carry you forward and spend little to no fuel for travel. the problem would be carrying enough fuel to get off of earth and then the Martian surface once you’re ready to leave. It takes around 7 months to get to mars at the closest orbits with our current tech, it took curiosity 253 days. Sounds like a cool way to travel through space, but it won’t be used to get to mars.

I disliked this video, which is very uncommon for any of the SciShow videos. Seriously: the explanation of the hall thruster's operation principle I found barely understandable, wikipedia does a way better job in this case. Also, you talk about "high" and "low" thrust but never mention any numbers. Wikipedia gives me an exhaust speed of 10 to 80km/s; it also gives me a thrust of around 80mN for common models and up to 5.4N in lab experiments. I can compare that to a few hundred mN common ion thrusters have, to get an idea of what a "high" thrust is. This isn't hard to include - don't take us for idiots who are afraid of a few numbers. Lastly, and I can't stress this enough: Ion thrusters NEVER actually emit ions alone. This is very important to their function. The have to neutralize the plasma after accelerating it - otherwise the drive would become negatively charged over time and that would eventually render it completely useless, as the resulting electric field would slow down the exhaust, and (based on Newton's third law) would slow down the thruster. Anyways: Looking forward to the usual, great videos :)

@@Yamaazaka Maybe the numbers don't mean something to everyone. But the comparison of those number surely does. When you compare a few hundred mN to >5N, you can easily see that the new thruster has an around ten times higher thrust than other ion drives. And that is an info that helps to understand the importance of that technology while it is not very complicated to comprehend. Maybe my criticism is too harsh, but I've seen a lot of educational TV shows going down the drain by dumbing stuff down more and more (to get more viewers) until the information got even literally wrong or it was stuff like "can this large and fat man eat the world's larges Bratwurst?"... And I just don't want this to happen so SciShow, because they are awesome!

I find it a bit annoying that you put two somewhat contradictory things as advantages for the Hall thruster. At the same input power, one thruster cannot really beat another in both efficiency and thrust at the same time, unless one of them uses a technologies that has large efficiency issues. Physically, it's quite a simple trade-off: high exhaust velocity means high fuel-efficiency (because you're getting a lot of momentum per atom), but at a given power level, you cannot arbitrarily vary the number of atoms you can accelerate to a certain exhaust velocity per second. Basically, kinetic energy has two variables: mass and velocity. Power is the rate of change of energy, and the power supplied to the propulsion system is used to constantly increase the kinetic energy of the atoms (i.e. accelerate and expel them). Therefore, for fixed power, you have two choices: either you increase the exhaust velocity but decrease the mass flow rate, or the other way around. Less exhaust velocity but high mass flow will decrease your efficiency (because each atom contributes less), but it increases the thrust.

Becuase you would have to use a chemical engine to lift a huge worthless battery into space that has 0 redundancy capabilities in case a single thing fails to then wait forever for it to build any kind of speed that is worthwhile.

Could you start an ion thruster months ahead of time on Earth, then use chemical thrusters to get into orbit, abandoned the external chemical Thruster, and let the ion Thruster take over?

It probably is, except stark isnt using Xe Gas and because he has the Arc reactor hes probably able to quickly ionize denser gases to greater effect.

What those ion thrusters were on a ship already in motion. The E.M Drive didn't work because a body at stays at rest. At best the walls would vibrate. Or melt the walls . But if on a ship already in motion.with conveniental Rockets . The E.M drive would accelerate the ship with less fuel. Even after turning rockets off

You're omitting something extremely important. While xenon is indeed the best fuel with the highest specific impulse out of the noble gases, it is EXTREMELY expensive, and time consuming to get large quantities of.
