As a veteran of the old circle tube line pub crawl (many years ago and lost in a drunken haze), I’m proud it only took one week for someone to come with a modern equivalent & announce it on the jubilee weekend. Very British urban adventure. Well done rob.
I worked on the building sites in London in 1989 to 1990. Loved the tube and the overhead rail - I lived in Palmers Green so my tube stop was Wood Green or if I took the overhead from Moorgate (I think) then it stopped at Palmers Green unless I fell asleep, then woke up in Hertford North or Welwyn Garden City (I think they were the end of the lines from memory). I woke up late one night at a station I think it was called Watton at Stone and the station master called out to me and told me their were no more trains for the night, I was feeling glum until he told me there was a train coming back empty to London and he’d ask the Driver to stop and drop me off at Palmers Green, which is what happened - what a nice thing to do. I love your videos of London railways, I’m back home in Ireland now but the happy memories of London will always stay with me.
Working my way through the pub-themed episodes on this channel and greatly enjoying it. I used to frequent The Flying Horse (or The Tottenham, as it was back then) in the late 1980s and became good friends with a young American couple who were working there. Visited them in the USA a few years later after they'd gone back home from their travels. Still in touch with one of them on Facebook, over 35 years later. I was in London in July and staying just off Tottenham Court Road, so popped in for a pint. First time there in decades. Lovely memories.
i absolutely love your videos! soothing, yet jovial narration. very relaxing, therapeutic, even 😆 lots of facts and history. great footage. regular new content. as a Londoner myself, i find i don’t actually do much exploring, i think i’m pretty typical, really. thank heavens for you! exploring everything for us 🤣 i think you’re my favourite channel! i just wish you would add that missing apostrophe to Rob’s London 🤣🤣 cheers, matey!
Thank you so much Sarah Louise, that means a great deal to me 😊 It is honestly the fantastic support like yours which keeps me going! To be honest I wish I could put an apostrophe in the channel title too! It’s a bit late now though… It comes from my original website; when I created the name it wasn’t possible to put an apostrophe in the web address, so I had to create a blend of the two words… and that became the brand! 🤣 Thanks so much again for your wonderful comment, it’s set me up for the day! Cheers and have a great weekend 😉
Another corker, Rob! My trips to London are so infrequent that it's likely I'll never visit any of these pubs, but I could listen to you talk about them for hours :) With love from Yorkshire x
Outstanding Rob I used to ride the underground rails when I lived on the streets of London. It was warm and relatively safer. The New Elizabeth Track is a marvel of British Engineering.its a Tourist attraction in itself, Rob you video showcasing some of London’s fantasticPubs , highlight this. 😊🏴☠️
Well worth the wait. Once again, an entertaining, exhaustively researched and very well presented video. Thanks Rob, you always manage to raise the bar (pun intended ) 😜. Cheers. Lance.
Your video is fascinating and so informative. The whole line is an incredible masterpiece of modern engineering. The logistics to successfully complete the project is mind boggling. The wonderful pubs you highlighted is the cream on the cake. I raise a pint to your hard work and thanks for posting.
We finally got back to London after Covid and the Elizabeth Line was top of our must does. It was a happy week finding as much art as possible on the stations and riding from 1 side of London to the other. It's marvellous to see your video as we now how a much better idea of it all. Love your work.
Hello Rob Was a great way to present the new Elizabeth Line. We are looking forward to taking this line our next time in London. We did get to visit the bell factory and its museum before it closed which is a shame it was a jem. We did buy a small bell that they made. There is another small museum by the hospital which has some of the Jack the Ripper letters. Which name escape me but it is near the pub you featured. We have not been in any of pubs though mention, I know that my grandparents visit Dirty Dicks pub in 1970 on there visited London mentioned near Liverpool station. I know this because they took a picture of the pub. Thanks for the great video. Take Care Chris and Sandra of Canada.
Such a well constructed ride along... love the twine of rail and pub history.... amazing work to build that line, love the dedication to all those that helped design and build it. Hope you have a great Bank Holiday weekend. Much love to you and family.
Hello Rob, we did this walk on Friday and loved the explanations of the stations and pubs. Our only dislikes were the rather long walks to The Gun and Streeties, the latter was quite a long walk but I appreciate that perhaps there were no nearer pubs of character. Great idea thank you.
Thanks so much Michael, glad you enjoyed it! Yes The Gun and Streeties are a bit out of the way unfortunately, it's a bit of a pub desert out there. Glad you made it though :-) Cheers and stay well.
Great video. The story of pub-goers skipping over the London / Kent border to drink longer into the evening reminds me of how Edinburgh residents used to skip down to Leith which was a different city with different laws. I'm sure there must be loads of examples of this kind of behaviour!
I used to drink at the Flying Horse when I worked in Russell Square( back of Tottenham court Road and also at Centre Pint.) Thank you, Rob, I enjoyed the this show and also learning the history around each station. What a interesting place London is.
I used to go to a nightclub in Farringdon (Turnmills), many years ago. It was demolished to make way for the new station. I want to thank you though for showing me the area in daylight for the first time in my life! Looking toward to the Reading to Shenfield pub crawl video in the autumn where Rob gets less and less coherent the further east he goes!
Thanks Rob, I spent my first 12 years in London and still miss it all those years later. We used the underground mostly in those days as the busses were a bit of a diagrace. I was on a bus one day when the transmission fell out of the bottom right outside the Olympia but I was only one stop away from home so I walked!
Gosh! That reminds me of an incident when I was young; we were on a bus and the driver must have gone the wrong way, as he had to turn the bus around in the road. Needless to say, it got stuck! I remember all the men on the bus got out and tried to bounce/push/dislodge it from the kerb!
Brilliantly researched and narrated Rob. The clock at 5.18 is the same as the one in Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. Lovely and amusing to watch for a few minutes.
The Abbey Arms was a simple chose being the only pub in Abbey Wood 😁. The station was elevated up onto the flyover. The Crossrail platforms were the original station platforms and before the flyover was constructed in the 80s there was a level crossing where the Crossrail gate line is now positioned.
Yep! I’m lucky it had a good story to go with it 😂 I saw photos of the level crossing when researching it, really wanted to include it but it would have been too much of a diversion sadly. Cheers and stay well 😉
Amazing video 🎉 I still go in the flying horse and I did a couple of walks past the blind beggar pub but as a Londoner myself lol I thought it best I didn’t say all I heard about the place 😂 would love to hear a video from you though as you tell the stories so well 👍
Thank you for the wonderful video, Rob. Really interesting and fun to watch. I did a trial run (halves of shandy) of the full crawl, but in reverse-order to finish at Paddington. As The Abbey Arms doesn't open until the evening on weekdays I had to forgo that one and have a soft drink from WH Smiths in Abbey Wood station instead. I got caught out with the Running Horse being closed on Mondays and had to substitute the nearby Spread Eagle. It was a superb adventure with some really great pubs. My favourite three pubs were Streeties, The Gun and The Good Samaritan. When I do this "for real" with a group, I think it will be in two halves. Thanks for the great idea!
Wonderful video. Weve just come back from a week at Abbey Wood Campsite and used the Elizabeth Line nearly daily. Our interests when in London is history and Pubs which combine wonderfully LOL. Used the line to get to Wapping and Rotherhithe to visit the historic pubs of the Captain Kidd ( not old but great location and 2 minutes from Wapping and the Mayflower and the Angel. So good news youve now given us a great pub crawl for our next stay. As I said Wonderful Video.
Another fascinating video ,am very impressed with your research .maybe the Shakespeare Head Kingsway could be one of the longest pubs .Be lucky Barry Southern
Good video Rob. Shout out for Ye Olde Mitre only a few mins from Farringdon. A cracker of a pub dating from 1547, hidden down a little Alley. Worked nearby, a great place to hide ourselves of an afternoon.
Cheers! Yes, Ye Old Mitre is easily the most requested pub here, so I'll certainly be covering it soon. I was going to include it in my first ever pub video- but the footage was ruined! Thanks and stay well ;-)
Fantastic.. thank you for this video.. The Flying Gorse was my local last time I was in London as I was staying just around the corner but it was still The Tottenham at the time it’s just a fantastic little pub.. can’t wait to get back and actually do this pub crawl 😜😜
Like the look of the Flying Horse n the Betsy Rob. Amazing engineering installing the Elizabeth line into Whitechapel...ps I've actually been in the Gun for some reason, very good sir👍😊🍺
London changed so much from the last time i visited ! thank you for your videos, it make me see the new part of the city, and the historical i didn't know. !
Another fun pub tour. Train station info was very interesting. While watching I was reminded of a few places in New Hampshire US, that were called taverns or inns, mimicking pubs. One I went to after work on Friday with the POETS club. Being a girl, I was an honorary member. POETS stands for, Piss On Everything Tomorrow's Saturday. It was 5 Software Engineers and me. Good times.
Such a great video. I had a ride on part of this line last weekend and was very impressed. So much history in those old pubs :) Looking forward to your video about The Blind Beggar.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Darren, much appreciated :-) I'm hoping to cover the Blind Beggar later in the year, so please do stay tuned! Cheers and stay well.
yet again another marvellous video, i am actually heading home to London this Tuesday but only for a couple of days, first time home in about 3 years, staying in the heart of the city this time and actually had a mini pub crawl worked out but i think i might just have to add one or two from your video's, Thanks again Rob for the top notch work.👏👏🎬
Outstanding video Rob and a wonderful mix of above and below ground details and history. I've not yet been on the new line but certainly will on our next London pub crawl and try some of your picks :)
Oh, well done!! 👏 Your videos are always so informative and engaging. We're planning to move to London this summer, and look forward to doing this pub crawl (although I don't think we'll manage to complete it in one day!) Look forward to your next video 😊🚇
Thanks for braving the weather to film this! The Elizabeth line certainly looks impressive, but I don't think it will be of much use for any journeys I'm likely to make anytime soon. I've drunk in The Gun a couple of times and (I think) also Woodin's Shades (though that would have been at least 18 tears ago...). When I worked in Canary Wharf (2006-2020), my favourite 'real' pub was The North Pole in Manilla Street, until it sadly closed in 2014. I'll have to give your other featured pubs a go sometime.
Hi Rob What a treat thoroughly enjoyed this video, which as usual was brilliantly researched I can see now why it took so long to post...after visiting all those pubs you definitely needed a lie down (lol) All the best Mike
Ha ha! So sorry to keep you waiting! I must admit, this one was a lot of work, I’ve not slept much the past few days as you may be able to tell from parts of the narration 😂 The incredible support and kind words I receive from wonderful folks such as yourself though make it very worthwhile 😊 Cheers and stay well
Hi Rob, Very good and informative video on the Elizabeth Line. It’s particularly interesting the artistic features which have been incorporated into the stations.
a very impressive video..when I used to shop for CDs, plus Vinyl at Virgin records....years ago on Oxford St the Tottenham Pub was a very useful stop, I do like a beer, anyway it was always an expensive drink..however a short walk towards HMV ..I had a choice, a better record emporium plus several pubs nearby, one being the John Snow..not the England Fast Bowler, but the man who identified the poisoned wells and indeed smashed the pumps..although they did not actually meet, it is said that John Snow and Joseph Bazalgette saved the day......a very Stinky Tale.
great video Rob made me rather thirsty really liked the Woolwich station bit must try the gun have a toast to Nelson and a toast to Robslondon vids all the best Rob
You don't have to be born a Londoner to be mad about the tube, but probably it helps. Next time in the smoke I'll reenact this vid! Fanx for the upload.
Rob as usual a fascinating video. Not sure I am man enough anymore for the pub crawl but the history the line passes through is almost endless and fascinating. Keep safe.C.
I always enjoy your videos and they, as always, are so worth waiting for, I rarely make it to London but I really should visit the pubs you recommend, keep up the great work!
Rob that was another brilliant video, great work.. I’ve been to six of the pubs including doing a DJ gig at the Betsy Trotwood some 20 odd years ago! However unlike your excellent video I tried the Elizabeth Line last night and it was found wanting. Whilst the actual on board journey times are quick the ‘inter connectivity’ ( bit like the DLR ) seems lacking - the journey last night took well over an hour from Lea Bridge Stn - Stratford- Liverpool St - Paddington - Ken High St. Oh & thanks pointing out there is a direct change to the Bakerloo line at Paddington…. Hopefully when they joined together it’ll get quicker! Also thanks for the Abbey Wood background & William Morris - never heard of it before! 😊👍 Looking forward to your next video 👍
Cheers Jonnie! Yes, I think there are a few teething problems at the moment. I believe the trains will be more frequent once it’s all seamless. Cheers and stay well.
Thank you so much Hannes 😊 It depends what you’re interested in I guess? Museums, history, pubs, gardens? Let me know and I’ll see what I can come up with!
@@Robslondon anything, I like gardens, museums, sights basically anything that’s a bit more than the obvious and not commonly known. You know the gems of London I’m a omnivorous
@@Hannes_Lind If you're a real ale fan and in Covent Garden, you should check out two pubs in the area- the 'Lamb & Flag' on Rose Street, and 'The Harp' on Chandos Place. As for gardens and quiet spaces, there is a lot around there- perhaps the Inns of Court off of Fleet Street ;-) Lincoln's Inn is nice too. Hope you enjoy your trip!
That's a great upload. The station looks lovely. They've done a great job on them. So, was that your first 'official' pint at 18 Rob? 😜 Thanks again for the great information 👌
As a northerner you may find it odd that i do understand london travel is so important....when normaly its of no interest ...but one day im goner have too do a london pubs walk .. sadly weve lost hundreds of tradional pubs up here cumbria co durham northumberland my area... cracking vid👌
An unusual twist Rob, compared to the other videos I've seen. This is how I would have explored the line, back in the days when I enjoyed travelling, trains and a few pints. If I ever get to ride this new line, I just might try it this way.😁👍 I've been in that one at Woolwich and, I think, I was once in The Gun. Cheers for now, Dougie.🍻
