He hasn't done it for her because she doesn't want it and it seems to me he resents that fact. She told him she did most things for him but he was continuously doubting her and acting like she was those other catty women in the palace. He stopped trusting her. He's a jerk!!

And what's worse, the concubine didn't even WANT to be doted on.

@@loulouwillis5648 What makes me dislike him even more was that he was willing to command the other consorts to not bully Consort Rong, but he didn't do that for Ruyi. He prioritised the politics and the power the consorts' families brought to him over Ruyi and so he downplayed all the horrible things they did to her to keep the boat from rocking in the harem. But yes, I agree that his obsession with Consort Rong had a lot to do with his desire to punish Ruyi for not wanting or showing enough gratitude towards his gifts and favours, specifically the empress seat. I think that he rather liked the fact that Consort Rong cherished her deceased fiance and resisted him. It was sort of a challenging game to him. If he succeeded in making Consort Rong fall into line as his concubine, it would show Ruyi and the others just how magnificent he was to be able to "conquer" a resistant concubine and make her let go of her precious fiance. He didn't care how Consort Rong felt about him on a personal level, or how hollow his "victory" was (ie. She was only doing it for the sake of her family and clan) as long as the rest of the harem and the public saw her submitting to him. I think a big reason why he was so angry with Ruyi for helping Consort Rong become infertile was because her producing his children would have been his ultimate show of victory. Those children would have been paraded around like they were his walking trophies. Even when the Empress Dowager and Consort Rong spoke up to clear Ruyi of any ill-intentions, in his stubborn mind, Ruyi was still the one who ruined it all for him. I also think he setting up a little psychological mind game with Ruyi when he asked her to persuade Consort Rong, knowing it would put Ruyi in an uncomfortable position. He expected Ruyi to talk him up with praises of how good a husband he would be to Consort Rong if she would only give him a chance. He wanted Ruyi to hear herself saying those words out loud. But of course she chose to approached it from a rational and truthful angle and told Consort Rong to think of her people and what her fiance would have wanted for her, which would not have been death. Ruyi never downplayed or dismissed Consort Rong's attachment to her late fiance and was genuinely empathetic rather than simply sympathetic, and that's why Consort Rong appreciated and respected her so much.

True. When Ruyi finally became the Empress, the Emperor told her that now they can FINALLY be painted together…but then made a painting of him and a concubine, disregarding all the rules that he has followed before and disrespecting her as his Empress at the same time. (it’s satisfying how at the end Ruyi cut and burned her painting and Rong asked her maid to throw hers away..no one be glad to be associated with him even in a painting) Also, he tried hard to keep as secret Empress Fuca’s bad deeds before including murder attempts to preserve her good name..but when it’s Ruyi, he even made it public how bad she was, how she can’t hold a candle to the previous empress, how her empress insignia has been taken away, how she was locked up in her palace for ‘being crazy’ and even after death she was announced to just being bestowed a humble burial. Disrespect again and again 😑

I agree. He was traumatized after discovering that the women he thought were good (the empress and the Hui woman) were actually evil, and afterwards struggled to trust anyone again. He picked ruyi not just because of his feelings, but because she has no stable background and therefore can't force him to do anything. I didn't notice how shaken he was the first time I watched, but on rewatch I noticed he really got upset that he misjudged those women so thoroughly. His paranoia truly started back then, and he never let that go. Unfortunately Ruyi became part of his calculations long ago and he never had to cater to her if he didn't feel like it.
