@@BlandoTaco The video says the deuterium is the the core of the tip. Makes no damn sense. Writers obviously thought that as the US military uses depleted uranium cores in tank ammunition, people in the future would use nuclear fusion material in their ammo I.e. deuterium. Makes no damn sense though. Deuterium is still very light (second lightest atom that exists after hydrogen) and the "depleted" product of deuterium fusion would be some helium isotope which still is very very light. No armor penetration whatsoever. Might give the victim some mild dose of radiation at worst.

"Depleted deuterium core" is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. I have to think that in the 41st Millenium a super dense metal has been created or discovered and named deuterium.
@mrmeatyboy
@mrmeatyboy 4 года назад
I think the guys developing the lore at Games Workshops confused depleted uranium rounds with deuterium. Or they just thought it sounded cool or something lol.
@Tippetts6618
@Tippetts6618 4 года назад
Deuterium has been forged into a liquid metal using lasers and also can be forged under high pressure. Jupiter is thought to have high amounts of liquid metallic hydrogen in its dense atmosphere. Deuterium has potentially also been forged into a soild metal after being subject to even more incredibly high pressure using the space between two diamonds to squeeze it. Jury is still out on that one though. Scientists have been trying to create metallic hydrogen for sometime so who knows what we will discover maybe it is possible. Either way with it being theorized in this universe I am happy to believe it can exist in another that has 40,000 years of advancement on our own, I just try not to think of them as being "heavy water" rounds lol
@MayonnaiseVenusaur
@MayonnaiseVenusaur 4 года назад
@@Tippetts6618 as far as we know, metallic hydrogen isn't very dense. It is at least less dense than lead.
@Tippetts6618
@Tippetts6618 4 года назад
@@MayonnaiseVenusaur perhaps it has less to do with density. Sure depleted uranium rounds, which is the comparison here, take advantage of the higher density of DU to be effective at penetrating armour however so can a small thin disc of copper with an explosive charge also be effective at armour penetration, the Taliban sure made it work. Obviously the copper plate has limitations depending on its scale. I chose copper as an example because it is almost half the density of depleted uranium and less dense than lead which you mentioned. An APFSDS round that a tank fires is a dart like munition and can be made of depleted uranium or more typically a tungsten rod. It flies towards a target at something like two kilometres per second and upon hitting the target with such speed it burns it's way through armour. By the time it reaches the other side it will either be pieces of super heated metal that ignite other munitions inside the vehicle, kill/ injure crew, damage components and very likely de-pressurise the tank turning crew to jam (this is why tank hatches pop open sometimes when hit) or it may go in one side and out the other doing some or none of the things above. Look at the effectiveness of American and British tanks during the Iraq war. Anyway now that context for this bit is out the way back to the point. it is believed metallic hydrogen would potentially be unstable and revert back to a liquid metal state when pressure is again exerted upon on it so "core" may refer to an encased liquid state deuterium and so maybe a metallic deuterium isn't even relevant. If it is metallic perhaps when the pressure exerted upon the deuterium round upon being fired reverts it back to a metallic liquid, then the energy gathered in flight turns the depleted deuterium into a hot globular of burning metal when it impacts on its target, something akin to a more dense and super heated paintball. Alternatively perhaps it remains a soild metal when leaving the weapon and the pressure during flight or on impact reverts it back to liquid metal basically working in the same way as today's APFSDS rounds do. We know that the ammunition used is also an explosive round and depleted deuterium is unlikely to explode, even if it was a thing so the ammunition is probably something akin to a mix between how an APFSDS and HESH (high explosive squash head) round works. A malleable metallic head with an explosive charge behind. Basically how the Tailban's copper discs work except less penetrative. A HESH rounds squash head part flattens on a surface it impacts on and the explosive force of the charge behind transfers energy through the armour plate and causes a hot piece of "scab like" metal to break off inside a tank which can injure/ kill, damage components or ignite other munitions inside a vehicle, very different to how the APFSDS or the copper disc works. Maybe the bolter rounds then have a depleted deuterium core (liquid or metal) encased behind an explosive head. The explosive head cracks open the armour and the deuterium core, either liquid or solid, follows through the opening and penetrates the target negating any need for the deuterium to have a relatively high density to other materials because it only needs to penetrate the flesh of a target which is pretty malleable. Space marine armour is made of a material called ceramite which is fictional, kind of like depleted deuterium is in fact lol. The nature of ceramite is described on the warhammer wiki as follows: "Unlike metal, Ceramite doesn’t rupture or dent on impact and it takes a projectile of considerable power and high calibre to break through it." It also mentions it doesn't conduct heat so las-weapons are ineffective against it, although all armour is penetrated by a combination of energies be it speed, thermal, pressure etc. A not so dense substance even super heated is probably not gonna burn though this then. Boltguns can be effective against ceramite as seen in the universe of 40k so maybe it is the explosive head of a bolter round that is the effective part vs the armour and depleted deuterium cores job is just for killing the target even if it is a slither of super heated liquid metal that does this. It makes sense for a people who live in a state of constant war to have a good supply of materials to create ammunition and considering deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen, and I think given their advancements they are probably pretty good at manufacturing this, they have a bloody good supply. Although obviously heavy water has other uses...

You should remark that a bolter round is a 0.75 cal shell which roughly equates to a 19.05 mm bullet and would deliver ~44.000 joules of energy at the tip of the cannon. Most of the picturing of the weapon doesn't fit the real diameter of the cannons. This calculations are based of current technology of the fire weapons; a single bolt shell would produce roughly the same kinetic energy as 30 rounds of 5.56 mm bullets fired from a regular sized assault rifle (as the HK G36).
@WordBearer86

The ammunition has extra propellant moving the projectile faster than any bullet used today. It is also imbued it's own machine spirit by mechanicus at manufacture. A machine spirit is basically a tiny avatar of a specific C'tan. Your videos are great as always! I find this one particularly interesting working in the munitions field. Curiously, were it not for the round exploding upon penetration (or possibly after a very short delay after penetration) it would actually be quite arguable that they would be excessive, and that the issue would turn into over penetration. Still, the rounds always look a lot bigger than what they are shown to be, if a Space Marine is much larger than a regular man, these bullets must be much, much larger than 3/4 of an inch in diameter...

That the "standard" bolter is only somewhat smaller than a Mark 19 automatic grenade launcher, and that the "heavy" bolter is probably about the size of the 30mm chaingun mounted on an Apache helicopter (with a shorter barrel).
@Schwarzvogel1
@Schwarzvogel1 4 года назад
@@eriktrimble8784 In the fluff (at least in text), don't they describe bolter shells as being either .998 or .75 caliber? That's way smaller in diameter than a 40x53mm grenade. Have you ever seen a .950 JDJ round? I imagine that a boltgun shell would have similar dimensions to that, perhaps with a shorter casing since the bolt shells themselves generally look like they have straight-walled, rather than bottlenecked casings. (www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_0080.gif for reference). As for the heavy bolter, I always envisioned it as being similar in dimensions to heavy machine guns like the M2 Browning, or even experimental weapons like the XM307.

"You can't just make a rocket launcher fit in a pistol!" ++HA HA BOLTER GO BANG-FWOOSH++
@Sh1tbagActual

I never understood why people think Bolters have excessive recoil. Like, they're actually massive, and have a relatively small initial recoil impulse due to the rather anemic kicker charge and are rocket propelled, which would not produce any substantial felt recoil. The real issue would be actually manhandling and bringing the thing to bear, which is within the realm of possibility, as Marines were known to do so with M1919 Medium Machineguns in both standard and field expedient 'stinger' configurations during WWII
@drunkbunny94
@drunkbunny94 5 лет назад
So ive known that the rounds used are rocket propelled but i never thought about it until now with all the pictures: why are their bullet casings? The case would be full of the propellant and that is attached to the bullet so it would leave the end of the barrel and not ejected from the side of the weapon.

Let me explain how it works, since yall are arguing. This type of gun (although deemed a failure) actually exists. It uses a primer like any other ballistic weapon, but in this case it just pushes the projectile out of the barrel, after leaving the barrel a rocket type propellant now ignites and produces thrust for the "bullet".

Actually the largest hand held rifle used by man fires a .950 caliber round but a standard bolter only fires a .75 cal round which is only 50% bigger then a .50 bmg. I find it strange that a bolter would dislocate the shoulder when the physics would say otherwise

the .75 cal is only for the sisters bolter which makes more for a human in power armour i know you did research but you have to acknowledge that the bolter would have to be a minimum of .998 to do the damage and make the sounds that are even mentioned in the books

No the Godwyn used by the Astartes currently is specified as .75 caliber, Phobos .70, and Umbra .60. FW HH campaign books and others as sources. Sororitas have a .75 varient but in lore use a very wide variety of bolter patterns depending on where they are from as they do not have the same uniformity of production Astartes forges do. .998 or 1.00 cal ate usually in the heavy bolter range or specialist weapons. Keep in mind explosivity of many compounds in the far future may be much higher per gram than current compounds like RDX.

So there basically like the gyrojet weapons but with explosive diamond tiped rocket ammo that doesn't take 30ft to get up to speed I definitely think I could design one the closest we have atm is a south African checkpoint guard neopup called the ikuzni paw it shoots 30mm he rounds among others its jobs to stop cars or blow rooms and there occupants apart through doors or windows so you can imagine how powerful the ikuzni is its funny apart from the space and aircraft we already have weapons that far exceed anything the humans use in warhamer the Las guns and the eldar stuffs going too take a while to invent lol want a harlequins kiss they sound mental

Love how the lore doesn't match the table top. Imperial Guard, bunch of normal humans, actually has a lot of options to take bolters if they want. And by that I mean Sargents, officers, and commissars can all take bolters instead of pistols. It's kinda funny.

although I love 40k, when I try to think about the actual use of weapons and their ammo capacity then nothing makes sense anymore. They would loose all their ammo in first 15min of battle. And that logic applies to basically any unit that uses ballistic type of ammo. For me it’s defiantly one of the biggest fail of basic logic thinking. I’m quite high at the moment as well

I like W40K, but I'm still a bit new to it. So I have a question. If the rounds from a bolt gun are self-propelled, why is there recoil? From looking at real-life examples, the only self-propelled munitions are Gyrojet bullets. their selling factor was their very low recoil. I just want to know if this is the "fiction" part of the universe, or is there an explanation to the recoil.
