FANTASTIC video and game!!! It's amazing what you can get out of both these machines when you know how to do that. Graphics and sound. It's well known that the SID chip can do miracles, but here the music is just incredible. Fine job you did, shooting this stuff and editing the video. The side by side comparison between machines was something I wanted to do for some time already, but you were quicker 😀 Actually my idea was to do it between C64 and MSX, since they have many comparable features. And you're right, both versions are very close. It's a great achievement indeed. Your Plus4 display seems to have a slightly different frequency than the C64. Keep up making videos like that!!

I guess the plus4 screen is loaded compressed into the memory and its uncompressed and then shown...on the c64 i guess its just a showeffect. @tcfs

@@GeorgesChannel on c64 it is a loader screen. When you see that drawing building up line-by-line, it means that the screen and the game is loading intoto the memory from disk right before your eyes. The speed of the screen appearance is the speed of the data loading into the memory. On Plus/4 the image is already avaklable in the memory as a compressed data and it requires no time to be shown.

Decades ago, I got to see a Plus4 which made an impression on me with it's sleek and futuristic design. The owner used it solely for business, which gave me the false impression that it packs some powerful hardware under the hood. A year or two later, I got a C64 (Breadbox) for xmas and was instantly underwhelmed by its design and lack of productivity software. This led me to believe the Plus4 was actually superior in performance and always wished I had one instead. It wasn't actually until a few years ago I finally bothered looking up the specs and discovering I had the better machine all along. Regarding this video, the Plus4 certainly doesn't disappoint.

A couple of things I like about the Plus 4 version, is the music is a little clearer in places but doesn't have the bass of the C64. I also noticed that the Plus 4 version has 3 layers of parallax scrolling where as the C64 only has two, although the mountains are bigger in the background. So that makes for a more realistic landscape on the Plus 4 version, which is really good for the system. Speed wise though, the C64 version is definitely faster which probably makes for easier gameplay, and the Plus 4 more challenging. And not too keen on the C64 speeder sound. Not sure if that is RU-vid sound or the real sound of the C64 version, but the plus4 has a nicer sounding speeder noise. Still, a great game.
@GeorgesChannel
@GeorgesChannel Год назад
Thank you for your analysis. The C64 sounds majestic, but is indeed slower. The gameplay was more responsive on the C64, but that could be misleading, because i uses an Joystick on the Plus/4 and a Joypad on the C64. The Plus/4 misses the soundeffect when a AT-AT-ST is exploding. The Plus/4 has a much smaller border than the C64, so the visible window is bigger. The colors on the C64 are brighter (same settings, same monitor). As you said. Both great games!
@tcfs
@tcfs 11 месяцев назад
Yes, the hills are bigger, because on c64 there are more characters available for the hills. On Plus/4 we need to preserve some characters for software sprites and those characters are missing from the hill gfx. This is why I simplified the hills at the end. The cost of the software sprites is always the reduced number of available chracters in the charset.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 10 месяцев назад
@@tcfsi don’t know the plus 4 hardware. Does it have hardware scrolling or not? If not I guess having smaller mountains etc would mean less data to shift for the CPU So that is also a benefit for smaller mountains?
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 10 месяцев назад
@@tcfsdisregard the other message I read the tech breakdown. So if I got it correct the scrolling is hardware. With splits where it won’t affect the software sprites and then with smaller sprites you give the illusion that the AT is a software sprites but it’s just scrolling background. And then the rest of the moving sprite stuff is real-time data shifted and combining of data. = less moving. Less overlap = higher frame rate and vice versa right?
@tcfs
@tcfs 10 месяцев назад
@@litjellyfish The hardware is capable of hardware scrolling. But creating raster-interrupted regions of screen using different hardware shift horizontally will break the software sprite crossing between those regions. The benefit of smaller mountains to provide enough characters can be used for software sprites.

Plus4 has a slower memory clock to stretch the image and get rid of most of the borders. Apparently, though the CPU could run at the full 1.8 MHz of the memory. I understood that phase1 keeps the CPU of the bus. How short can this phase be? Does it not do something internally? Could the CPU have run at 1.8 MHz all the time, but commodore did not want to cannibalise the C64? Instead of bad lines, TED could have loaded stuff inside the borders. More colors per char.

Next to the 2600 version of the empire strikes back, both look and sound fantastic. I don't think the C64 got a port of this one, just Star Wars: the arcade game. Even if PB had ported the game to the 64, it would have not looked any where near as good as Antonio's version. Still, the problem of the game is it's not very good. My cousin got this game right when it came out. I was over his house playing it and the new Frogger. It just wasn't very good. Frogger was a much better game.

+4 version holds up pretty well considering its audio and sprite limitations. The platform was such a missed opportunity. Tramiel wanted a cheap low budget device to chase an imagined market niche that never really existed (the speccy!). When he was fired his successor marketed it as an business solution at a higher price than intended and it flopped. Had they designed it with improved sprite and audio capabilities from the get-go, it would have been one for the ages. Suppose people did not think of computers as evolving products with cycles yet.

Not quite, based on what I've read. The TED chipset was designed originally as the basis of a low-cost platform, this is true. But the Plus/4 was intended to be introduced as a more business-oriented home machine before Tramiel left. The man was never particularly bothered about what the product lines could do as long as he could stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap. Yes, the TED chip lacked hardware sprites and the audio capabilities were inferior to those of SID on the C64, but in a machine intended for small business use, that's not a big deal (plus the CPU was clocked quite a bit faster and the overall colour palette was much larger). Unfortunately for CBM the advent of cheaper MS-DOS PC compatibles in the mid-80s pretty much killed the idea stone dead, and they had their first major flop.

Not a bad attempt for the Plus/4. After the success of the PET in business, Commodore were obsessed with computers for business, even the Commodore 64 was initially sold for business, but it had excellent gaming capabilities and sound making it a hit. The Commodore Plus/4 was another failed business attempt, but inferior to the C64 for gaming a few years later, unsurprisingly it flopped, but the worst was the Commodore 16 they spent a fortune advertising, only 16K in 1984 with inferior hardware, terrible. Later was the Commodore 128, but the vast majority of people barely used anything except 64 mode and it was rarely used for business. The Amiga saved Commodore, sadly it was all downhill again after that.

@@GeorgesChannel Thanks! Hey. The German accent is fine when speaking English👍! Compare it to Italian or Russian ;) These are yet just fine because I can easily understand all of these but I'm in trouble when I listen to someone from India ;) Having the accent isn't that bad because it answers the question /*where are you from?*/ - without a single word :)👌Keep a good work on your channel. Cheers!
