I found out Rosie is buried 5 minutes from where I live. I intend to visit his grave to pay my respects

Not sure if it was due to lack of time or running out of money but they had to skip the occasion in September 1944 when Rosies B-17 was badly hit over Germany and he had to crash-land in a liberated field in France. The plane wound up in a ditch and Rosie broke an arm but despite being told you've done enough, desk job, he was back in the air ASAP. He broke the same arm in the paracute landing in this episode.

The actor in the tail of Rosies aircraft in the opening scene is Real life Rosie's grandson. He was also there earlier in the series as well.

When Rosie walks into that camp and there's a crow in the shot subtly depicting death and the pain in that camp. This episode was something else.

It was a much harder story to tell. In Band of Brothers the campaigns were long and drawn out but with the air crews it was this weird combination of comfortable living on base mixed with absolutely brutal combat missions. Like watching someone spend a day in a spa and then play Russian roulette. It's harder to convey that story than something like D-Day or the Battle of the Bulge. One thing a lot of people don't comprehend is that the casualty rate in the US Army Air Corps was the highest in the entire military during the war. The 8th Air Force lost more men than the entire US Marine Corps in WWII. The KIA rate was 10x higher as an airman than even the most dangerous infantry units.

The scene with the American POW helping the German guard up is even more profound since that American was identified as a Jew in a previous episode. Truly remarkable moment for what was going on at that time.

Anyone mention that the actor that plays the mechanic Msgt Kenny Lemmons is Rafferty Law? Jude Laws son😂😂 I got a kick out of that. When I saw him I was like.. that dude looks so familiar 😂 they look exactly the same!

One of the things the bibliography forgot to mention, was Robert Rosenthal was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (one step below the Medal of Honor) for the February 3, 1945 raid on Berlin.

Crosby when he found out the equipment room was locked was so pissed off when he was chewing out the supply officer afterwards in his head he was saying "who was this crosby"

the reason they didn't show any D day was because there was nothing to show. As mentioned in the episode they had close to zero resistance from the luftwaffe so there wouldn't have been much to show. Plus it's based on Crosby's book who didn't witness it and so didn't we.

I suggest Reel History and Jared Frederick for breakdowns of all the episodes. Crosby wrote of "Sandra" apparently after his wife passed. Whether it was an affair or not.......

The march from stalag luft 3 was brutal. They didnt actually burn the camp but they did only have half an hour warning to march. But it was so brutal everyone was just trying to survive guards and prisoners alike so much so even prisoners were carrying guards weapons at some points

8:29 that actually happened , but almost something similar happened but with Jews. In a documentary a Jewish man said he only survived the death March because a German officer gave him his canteen of hot coffee and some bread. Not the same, but another was a Jewish woman who said she survived because a young equally as terrified German soldier found her hiding, maybe 16-18 years old, he was made to the check the building . He saw her, said nothing and left her alone . She just cried wishing she gotten his name to thank him and his mother for raising a good boy, a good son. Humanity really does show sometimes in grim times. And yes the Germany army was extremely horrible, yet not all were. The psychology is very interesting and bizarre. There was some little good there 11:05 oh yeah here not only was it Jews, poles, Russians but they forget here whoever the script it wasn’t solely Russians it’s why they were called soviets! Uzbeks , Ukrainians etc. there was also people with mental health, autism, gay men, Yugoslavs, Romanis, and many many more

Please check out Crosby's book - "A Wing and a Prayer". The "Masters of the Air" book is more of a historical recounting of the whole 100th Bomb Group - Crosby's book is more personal. In fact, some of the spoken lines on the show are taken exactly word for word from his book. It's an amazing read. Also - there's an unofficial 10th Episode called "The Bloody Hundredth" Documentary :)

I am a veteran and son of a WWII veteran. I appreciate your reviews, especially war movies. I do have a movie suggestion for you for the upcoming American Memorial Day. I suggest you watch "Taking Chance" starring Kevin Bacon. It will show you watch how Americans felt about military and veterans a few years after 9/11.

Apparently the Crosby/Sandra intimate relationship is artistic licence/conjecture by the film makers. Crosby wrote of platonic friendships with an American Red Cross volunteer and a British service women. The filmmakers got a blessing from the children of Crosby to tell the best story they could.

The words Rosie said to the soviet soldiers to say he was american was his actual words.

Rosie wasnt just jewish but a lawyer so him seeing the camp both from an emotional and legal standpoint you can hear it in his voice when he spoke with Crosby " they deserved what was coming for them" when speaking about the Nazi's

Operation Manna and Operation Chowhound in April and May 1945 were humanitarian food drops done by the RAF,RCAF and USAAF to help combat the dutch famine of 1944-45. Over 20'000 dutch people died durint the famine and possibly more. The Allies dropped over 11'000 tons of food and when it was realised it would not be enough Operation Faust a land based humanitarian drive was organised. Unfortunately some people died by eating stuff too quickly or too much when they were starving like that scene in band of brothers in the concentration camp

I hope you watch the documentary the Bloody Hundredth. It's great and puts everything together.

The reason that the show didn’t have scenes on D-day, is because it would have been boring. If you listen, Rosie’s voiceover says that on D-day, “we were uncontested, there wasn’t a single german fighter in the sky” so what would have they filmed, them just flying around and dropping bombs? They need more time to include the stories rather than just random scenes.

The guy speaking is Crosby, not Buck.:)

It was originally going to have 10 episodes, but then COVID happened and they ran out of time and money. The Russians did recover a number of American flyers downed towards the end of the War, along with liberating POW camps. Reportedly, some of those men were never returned, and were instead taken back to Russia for interrogation. Several of the reactors I've seen watching this series missed the part where Rosie revealed he was Jewish, it was so casually done it was easy to miss. The battle in the POW camp never happened. It was made up entirely for the series. 12,000 B-17s were built during WWII. There are only six airworthy examples in the world today. Even the youngest surviving WWII veterans are in their 90s. The last survivor of the sinking of USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor just passed this year at 102. The 100th Bomb Group still exists today, as the 100th Air Refueling Wing. They are the only unit in the US Air Force that are permitted to display their WWII tail insignia, the "Square D." There honestly wouldn't have been a lot to show on D Day. Although the 100th Bomb Group flew a large number of missions in support of the landings, they were virtually unopposed in the air; The extent of the Luftwaffe's presence was exactly two fighters (flown by Josef Priller and his wingman) who made a single strafing pass over Sword and Juno Beaches, before running like mad for home (Priller was certain they would be killed, but he survived the invasions and the War, and was one of many veterans on both sides who served as technical advisors during the filming of The Longest Day). Of the THOUSANDS of aircraft involved, only about 120 were lost during the invasion, all to ground-based air defenses, with a loss rate of barely 1%. It would have just been watching the bombers fly through flak, drop bombs, and fly out again, without much drama. Perhaps had the series covered the fighter groups in more depth (the 56th Fighter Group was heavily involved in close air support during the landings) it might have provided something engaging to watch (they basically flew the same sorts of missions we saw from the Tuskegee pilots in Episode 8).

What's sad, a lot of the guys were back in Korea, 5 years later. Japan had dominated all of everyone for 2-300 years, from the eastern half of india, to the entire east, and most Pacific islands. Tiny little Japan. And they treated Chinese the worst. And China lived us during and shortly after, the war, from ending their centuries long tyranny. Yet by 48, China had gone totally communist, and was trying to take over Korea. 10 years after that, they subverted southeast Asia and we were back again, in Vietnam.

Still waiting for a reaction channel brave enough to show the actual, full conversation the Jewish man had with Rosie…

To put Rosie's 52 combat missions into perspective: Hans-Ulrich Rudel performed 2,500+ ground attack missions on the Eastern Front. He mostly flew the Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber, later chnaging to teh Fw 190F fighter-bomber. He was credit with over 500 tanks destroyed, 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 70 landing craft, 150 artillery emlacements and 800+ vehicles. Erich Hartmann has the most claims of any WW2 fighter pilot, with 352 claimed kills. He flew over 1,400 combat missions. For the RAF, there were a few pilots and crew that survived 100+ combat operations. This included Leonard Cheshire, who flew with No. 35 and No. 102 squadrons, and commanded Nos. 76 and 617 squadrons. Cheshire flew 103 combat operations, including as an observer of the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki. Cheshire's successor, James Tait, also flew over 100 bombing operations, 101 to be exact. Tait was 617's squadron commander when they sunk the Tirpitz. 617 Squadron was formed in 1943 to perform attacks against the Ruhr dams. Its commander was Guy Gibson, who had already completed two tours as a bomber pilot (in No.83 Squadron and as commander of No. 106 Sqaudron) and one tour as a night-fighetr pilot (No. 29 Squadron). Gibson completed 99 night-fighter combat sorties and 73 bomber operations. Gibson was shot down on his 74th bomber operation, and died. Gibson was rested from operations for about a year after the Dams raid. During that time he wrote "Enemy Coast Ahead", an account of his time in the RAF. The 1955 film "The Dam Busters" was based, in part, on his book, as well as the book "the Dam Busters" by Paul Brickhill. Some details of the raid and weapon were still secret when the film was made.
