It’s official: Hedi Slimane is exiting Celine after seven years, owner LVMH confirmed in a statement.
During his tenure, the star designer known for his trademark skinny silhouette has transformed Celine, adding menswear for the first time in the brand’s 79-year history, as well as expanding into high perfume and beauty. In womenswear, Slimane reconnected Celine to its historic identity as a purveyor of leather goods that incarnate Parisian bourgeois style, helping to more than double annual sales to €2.5 billion, according to analyst estimates. (LVMH does not report performance by brand).
”Celine has experienced exceptional growth and established itself as an iconic French couture house,” LVMH said in a statement. “The holistic vision of Hedi Slimane, his exigence and rigour have made it possible to redefine the codes of Celine whilst reaffirming its feminine and Parisian roots.”
Despite Celine’s success, sources told BoF in April that Slimane was locked in thorny contract negotiations with LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault could exit the label.
Despite Celine’s success, sources say Slimane had been locked in a thorny contract negotiations with LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault for months before ultimately exiting the label. While Arnault has long recognised the power of Slimane’s ultra-coherent, relatable touch for styling, branding, merchandising and stores, the partnership appears to have reached its limits amid a sharp luxury market slowdown.
While Slimane is widely regarded as an exceptional talent, he commands a high salary in addition to near total control over how hefty budgets are deployed across product development and communications.
Design teams regularly ferry sprawling collections of finished designs to Slimane’s South of France hideaway, where Slimane “shops” for favourite items and scraps the rest. Meanwhile, months and countless millions have been spent shooting the designer’s collection videos, which are typically dropped online without warning, limiting coverage by press and influencers.
Slimane’s commercially potent vision was worth the expense as it drove the business to new heights. But as LVMH tightens its belt in a slowing market, it may have been harder to stomach.
Now, LVMH will need to name a new designer to animate Celine’s collections without disrupting the momentum Slimane brought to the brand. Alaïa’s creative director Pieter Mulier maintains close ties to the Arnault family (notably first daughter Delphine) since his tenure working under Raf Simons at Dior, and is likely in the running. Michael Rider, a top design deputy during Phoebe Philo’s tenure at Celine who recently left a role overseeing womenswear for Ralph Lauren, is another leading candidate, according to market reports.

This time, Hedi should consider launching his OWN fashion house! That way, nobody would hate about him taking over other designer houses.

Regardless of how anyone personally feels about him, he’s obviously very successful and effective in his creative direction. Every house he’s been to, he has always managed to not only elevate the brands commercially but also changed the course of trends in fashion; from Dior Homme to Saint Laurent and to Celine. The previous 2, to this day, are still heavily influenced by Hedi’s design codes. If you didn’t know any better, you would think he’s still at Saint Laurent. Anthony Vaccarello literally just continued his work because they sell. Ultimately that’s all that matters to these houses and the corporations behind them.

When people think of Chanel they always go back to Karl, much the way that everyone went back to Phoebe’s Celine. I think that Slimane would go through the Chanel archives pre-Karl for inspiration. Also ppl tend to forget, but Coco was one of the first to put women in menswear and simplify silhouettes and get rid of the girdles that Dior brought back with the New Look… so in many respects Slimane would be an ideal fit at Chanel (even the skinny silhouettes largely came from Coco) with his menswear inspired silhouettes. The critics will inevitably compare him to Karl, but in all honesty can anyone see Coco- the essentialist, “take one thing off before walking out of the door”-designing (much less wearing) any of Karl’s frilly/ girly/ pastel designs? I can see what Chanel would be aiming for with Slimane… instead of trying to bring Karl’s spirit back, go in the opposite direction and go back to the brands origins.

every time he leaves a brand, it coincides with the moment when he is obviously a better businessman than the businessmen who run the brand. Thanks to its creative control, it was practically the only LVMH brand that didn't look cheap.

He was smart when it came to the business side of things. That fact the he negotiated royalties on the perfumes that he created was very smart and he should get as much money as he can because they make billions. They probably agreed because they didn’t think they would be that successful plus Anna Wintour and Bernard Arnault are buddies, If Celine did not make LVMH targets along with their other LVMH brands, its just an excuse to not renew the old contract terms so he was smart to walk away if they do not pay him what he is worth. I always lands on the side of paying workers/creatives……oh well these are high class problems lets see how this all shakes out.

58:14 btw I fit into, that’s a reason that I’m in love with his work, because he allowed skinny boys to be skinny and not like those massive dudes that walked down the runway at the time. Finally I could having clothes were I don’t look like Mc Hammer or something. And for the personal part I didn’t feel like crap anymore because I look « too thin » to the others

I think Hedi would be great at Chanel but not sure because they only give you so much control…so thats why maybe Margiela or maybe they will give him his own line. Thought that Galiano would also be great at Chanel……it would be right up his street with the coutoure line as well but who knows. Just please not let it be Jacquemous.

I see fantastic designs all the time but they certainly aren’t coming from any of the big houses / designers. Kei Ninomiya is an example of someone who makes amazing clothing and he’s innovating construction techniques but it goes relatively unnoticed.

I like his styling. He does do a lot of cultural quotations which make his seasons as a whole both mentally profound and pleasure to the eye. But I don't think those items are so unique that I want them desperately in my wardrobe. I even think he can be even more convenient for fast fashion like Zara to copy. Anyway I'm definitely not their customer base😅 Probably his items are quite successful among Celine's major customers.
