The End of Analog TV in Columbus - Part 1

As of June 12, 2009, only two broadcast channels in Columbus, Ohio - WBNS (10) and WSYX (6) - are broadcasting significant programming over their traditional analog signals. This video, taken a few hours before the midnight deadline for turning off those signals for good, documents what these and a few other Columbus-area analog signals are doing in preparation for the mandatory transition to digital TV. A second video, still to come later tonight, will document the actual moment analog transmissions cease.
Yes, I'm quite aware that I'm recording this using a hybrid (analog/digital) antenna connected to a modern digital TV, which is technically "cheating" for some TV nerds. Unfortunately, I don't currently have an old-style TV where I can get at it easily, so this video loses some authenticity points. Also, sorry for any poor-quality audio; I'm still trying to figure out the best sound balances.
No ownership claimed. I'm merely recording this for historical interest.

I remember watching a lot of these back in the day, I found them oddly fascinating. Yours is one of the most entertaining with your commentary.

Our Canadian TV channels are always slow when something this unique happens, but will follow suit this August 30th, 2011 when our stations go digital.

3:00 - They may not be changing virtual channel numbers, but they will be shifting their signals to new frequencies. Your TV has associated each virtual channel with a physical RF channel, which won't change automatically when the digital signals from those TV stations change frequencies. That's why the TV stations are telling you to re-scan after the transition is complete.

On July 24, 2011, television stations across Japan conducted their digital switchover. Unlike in other countries, television stations in Japan were required to broadcast a blue information screen on their analog signals between noon and midnight that day. Initially the transmitters were to shut off at noon, but technical issues occurred during the 2010 test shut-off of the analog relay transmitters in the Noto Peninsula, and as a result the government required the transmitters to be shut off at midnight. The networks still chose to end broadcasts on the analog signals at noon, which is why the information screens had to be displayed. The switchover was delayed in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures because they suffered severe damage in the March 2011 earthquake, and the analog signals there shut off on March 31, 2012.

At the time this was recorded, Columbus's Azteca affiliate was WCPX-LP (ch. 48); it moved to 23 last year. It's not scrambled, that's just how it was being picked up on my crappy antenna.

That is of course what I *meant* to say, but I stumbled over my own tongue trying to get it out. Actually, in Columbus *none* of the stations actually changed locations. All the channels that terminated their analog signal kept their digital signal on their pre-transition channels and use PSIP to appear on their traditional channel numbers, so I think I technically got it right... somewhere along the line, anyway. ^^;

Coincidentally, the analog switchover happened the same day as the Philippines's independence day at June 12.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they're the same TV on the inside. Insignia is just Best Buy's in-house brand.

I thought Azteca was on channel 17 in Columbus, Ohio. The only affiliate I know that broadcasts on channel 48 is WWHB in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Here in Akron, Ohio, WJW Channel 8(Fox) moved from Channel 31 to Chanel 8(Yeah, stupid move, I know) and I had to rescan my TV. WOAC Channel 67 moved to Channel 47 when it became a Total Christian TV affiliate and changed its call letters to WRLM.

My name is Dora and I need the island very badly because I feed on islands. Islands are my only food, and, as such, I need as many islands as I can get! Many people refuse to sell me islands because they know that I will just gobble them up, and that is true, but what harm would that do to them? We island-eaters are tired of the discrimination we receive from society in general, and would greatly appreciate it if just one ray of light was shone on our people in the form of Dream Island!
