BERSERK ANALYSIS: LOST CHILDREN Shows How The Story Will END
The lost children arc is one of the most important arcs in Berserk and the underlying theme of lost children might give us some key insight to the final ending of the story.
From my experience as a Berserk fan, the general consensus of the lost children arc seems to be that it is seen as filler by some casual fans while almost all hardcore highly respect it.
What is my opinion? the lost children arc is simply amazing. If you were to condense the story of Berserk into its smallest form, you would be left with the lost children arc. It has all the important pieces Berserk has to offer, the action, the drama, the darkness, the gore, and what is the main focus of this video, it includes and signifies one of Berserks most important, prevalent themes which will more than likely relate to how the story will end. And What has surprised me is that I have not seen anyone else talk about this. Booffire191 made a great video analyzing this arc, check it out if you haven’t already; but even he didn’t directly talk about this main theme.

The most hardcore fight in the manga. Guts is in his darkest, no-fucks-given black swordsman mode and his rage is unbelievably fierce. So many poignant moments from the lost children chapters, I'll never understand how anyone can think it's filler.

@@danielc.5260 It makes you wonder what will happen when he's finally face to face with Griffith for the last time. One on one. Much like Rosine, he's a demon, though one that personally wronged him. That does not mean that killing him would make things right, and I think Guts understands that to an extent. If only for Casca's sake, he likely cannot kill Griffith (also because he shares a body with his own child), so they will likely be like Gaiseric and Void: Doomed to a life of endless fighting at spiritual junction points in perpetuity.

@@Poet482 or maybe the cycle will be broken and guts either chooses to 'spare' griffith or he dies trying to fight griffith
@Poet482

@@danielc.5260 Perhaps. Or perhaps Griffith and their child's body will permanently be stuck in the full moon child form, while Griffith and Guts are trapped inside his body, and their endless conflict will be one of spiritual egos within the astral realm within the boy. Maybe the fight within the boy is conclusively won by Guts, Griffith, or both (they both die), but we're never shown the outcome. Have the story end with the moonlight boy carrying on both of their wills of his own will. Have it be ambiguous whose ego holds the most sway over the boy's future.

i think guts started to understand this already because after the fight of sea god. He clearly state that his new group give some meaning in his life. Without them, it doesn't matter that he dies inside the belly of sea god. He himself say that 'is it the end of him?' when he was drowning in the vast ocean of blood of sea god. His experience realizes his meaningless pride in himself and in his strength. It shows that he can't do anything about it. he can't save him and also he can't reject himself and his inner desire aka inner beast of darkness. But in the end he realizes that it is true but he has a reason. In more detail, his reason itself given by his loved ones themselves. They are the reason for him and themselves at same time (what i mean about they are also the reason for themselves means that guts realizes that their actions are not governed by what guts himself wanted. He think that he gave them some reason to live. He is the reason, his pride is the reason why they had some relevance in this world. His inner desire think they are just tools like casca to use and throw. He understands that they are more free than him. What they are doing is not because of mercy of guts but what they perceive about themselves. They are the reasons and results of their own actions in world. Their own actions governed what they become for their own self and their actions are governed by their own self. Without them, he is nothing in this world but without him, they can easily find meaning in their own self or personality. They already come terms with themselves unlike guts, Guts is actually quite weaker than them in the case of confronting himself. He is succumbed by his own inner demon and he is nothing against his own inner desire. His inner desire completely govern him. His own self and true reason didn't govern him. Their own self or personality and their resolve derived what they are for themselves and their actions for others and themselves. Guts didn't derived what they are for themselves. Guts action in the first place is not derived from his self but his inner demon. His inner desire determine what he should be doing in the first place. They are the reason why he isn't completely consumed by it and can force his will on it. They are the reason why he has strength to control this darkness as he wants. He needs them. They didn't need him. He can at least find meaning for him in them and help them to understand and take first step or encourage them for what they want to do for themselves in future as a mentor). It gives him reason to not die and push forward to save them and himself. It also give the reason of his brutality and destructive nature to PROTECT his loved ones. It gives the reason to his sword to use it in a meaningful way. It can use his sword to destroy and make the possibility to create something new for himself and his loved ones. He understand his neglect of them as well as Casca because he behave Casca as his own tool (not literally but he unconsciously do that because it is just a sacrifice to reach the hawk of light) to exploit and use but now he clearly understand his problem i.e. his lack of acceptance of his own weakness and vulnerability which he started to show in millennium falcon arc also but he understand completely there or lack of believe in himself and his friend i.e. his caring side. His side to accept that he care others and hate killing others meaninglessly. He like to thanks everyone and their friends for their effort. His side of expressing love and care to each other. His side to understand the pain of others i.e. empathy. And his side of try to stop what he think as incorrect or wrong path to follow i.e. 'justice' in some sense.

I can agree, we all live to struggle everyday but each day at a time we must at least try to make our lives a bit joyous with each step, everyday i hear and see on the internet about how the world is burning down around me despite that im still here, despite my struggles im trying my best each upcoming day, for that is to be human to see happiness despite how much darkness goes on in the world because whenever theres something terrible happening within the world there will ALWAYS be something good and its our jobs weather or not we think about it to keep it this way, because thats the true meaning of being human, to be alive.

I love the Lost Children Arc of Berserk chapter, Jill and Rosine maybe sisters the Soldiers violeting Rosine's mother and friends look like Zepek and his war buddies without the body weight añd Younger, the bonding between them is strong for a friendship. Perhaps the meaning of Lost Children chapters is when a child lost his or her innocents through abuses by parents Rosine's by her father, they become monsters, if they resist like Jill to Zepek in the end, they will never become that monster to there children.

I absolutely *love* this arc. Everything about it is beautiful. "There's no paradise for you to escape to." This applies to more things in life than you think, and people dismiss it simply because it's dark. As if the entire world isn't dark, people just don't want to see it as such. The quote is... strangely optimistic. When you know that anywhere you go, there will be people looking to take advantage of you, you realize that it's best to stand your ground where you are and to face your opposition head on, as it's the only way you have a chance of carving out a bit of happiness in the abyss that is the world. I also love the often-overlooked detail that Guts can't bring himself to actually finish off Rosine, even though he had plenty of chances. Just like he couldn't cut down Jill, even if it meant likely dying, himself, on the battlefield. The man is literally unable to intentionally slay a child, as it would represent him throwing away his humanity. As a result, the way Rosine dies is largely due to her own lie... and she lived just long enough to realize it and explain to Jill what a mistake she made. Guts really is something like a force of nature during his days as the Black Swordsman. He arrives, destroys any illusions people have in their lives and leaves, leaving the people he saves with a blank slate for their future... but not before ensuring they will have the will to survive, as an act of kindness. I love Berserk, in case you can't tell haha. Great video, man!

I had the same feeling regarding the conviction arc at first. Then I realized I kept thinking about it and how many moments stuck with me that I really came to appreciate it. It's not my favorite arc, but it is arguably one of the most important. I'm not even talking about someone's big appearance, but in particular Guts' decision at the moment of their appearance instead. That one page holds so much weight and is honestly one of my favorites in the entire series.

nah, conviction arc is equally great as lost children arc. Lost children is the build up for conviction arc in the first place. Lost children is the part of conviction because lost children build up for what will happen in conviction. I don't get that how could you call conviction weaker. When analytically it only improves more in conviction arc.

It's been shown that Griffith has created the "only safe place left for humans" via Falconia. If Guts kills Griffith, he will indirectly cause the pain, suffering and death of more people. Will he doom more people for his revenge? Or will he let Griffith live for the good of humanity? That's the question I think Miura is leading us to.

I like the idea of Berserk getting a Western Ending where Guts do just "walk off into the sunset", or maybe one like the movie Logan, where he dies, is buried, mourned, but most importantly: Remembered. I would find it most epic however if it happened after he defeated the Godhand, and it is either left uncertain what happens after his death, do he still go to hell as a sacrifise if the thing he is meant to be a sacrifise to no longer live? Maybe he ends with the Behelit of Kings and becomes a Thor-like god, a being of almost impossibility that can only happen once in a million years, where someone has been tempered into the god-hand of god-hands, a true god.

I enjoyed your analysis of one of my favorite arcs in Berserk I think the majority of it is spot on, but I do have to disagree on one key point. Rosine like all apostles is actually two characters a human with dreams and desires and an inhuman agent of the God Hand & causality. Berserk is fundamentally about the value of struggle. In this chapter Jill is shown a contrast between struggle (Guts) and submission (Rosine) even though the Misty Valley may seem idyllic it's really a trap just the the village. The offer given to become an elf was no offer at all, Rosine (in reality the God Hand) made the choice for Jill and expected her to submit to it. Guts however shows the way no not be a victim (of fate on any thing else) and in the end struggle wins over submission. Anyway keep up the excellent work and Rest in Peace Kentaro Miura.

Thanks for the video and the thoughts! I think when Guts said to Jill that this is my battlefield he doesn't only tell that for the reasons mentioned in the video, but I think is part of Guts taking his own decision to not involve others because he wants to be alone except when as we know casca is with her and accept others help but Farnese, Serpico, and Isidro decided to come and Guts wanted so that's okay and that is not part of causality. I think, someone mentioned that if Guts would've accepted Jill to come with him then she won't be able to be mature and face her own reality and take her own decisions. If Guts would say yes to come to her, the causality or Idea of Evil would use Jill and would ruin Guts goals and inclusive can use Guts behelit to sacrifice her family to face challenges and would be like Rosine so Guts is a hero for me and I would like to mention Theresia because she is the opposite of Jill. She didn't accepted the reality and wants to kill Guts so bad but she wouldn't be choosed by causality because she doesn't have a purpose like his father and she cannot use the behelit because no family is with her.

At the end of Berserk, Griffith, the old Band of the Hawk, and everyone else comes out alive and says, "lol Guts, it was all a prank, bro" No, but it's funny to think about.

I read berserk before watching any analysis or reading any articles and without a doubt the lost children arc is the second best arc after the golden age arc and one of the best in the entirety of anime and manga history.

Clash of ideologys and Rosine admitting she was wrong funny how you seemingly skipped over the part where Puck revealed himself to her proving that elves and fairytales are real except that they just weren't in the Misty Valley

even though the lost chapter is technically not cannon, it's still something important to the potential finale. Berserk is all about taking tropes and turning them a bit on their head. Guts is the protagonist, but he doesn't FEEL like a typical one, and yet we empathize and identify more with him because of that fact. Contrast that with Griffith who is seen as and appears as a savior type. The Knight in shining armor. But, that's all an illusion a farce that is brought on by blind faith and a misguided sense of ideology. The military of his kingdom are witness to the monsters he has with him, and yet they disregard this because "he's the hawk of light so he must no what he is doing." Rather than questioning why these things that feel so instinctually wrong are allowed to occur. Then we have the Idea of Evil. the "God" of the setting, though this is a bit of a misnomer I'm sure. It's a false god, and more of a manifestation of the selfish desires of humans to have a way to understand the world, that there is a greater power that causes things to happen rather than accept that sometimes bad things happen because that's just how life is. The Idea of Evil gives these aspects of life's pain "meaning" and hold off the greater population of human beings from taking control of their own destinies. This the whole aspect of causality. If things are fated to happen, then human beings are forever at the whims of causality and can truly not claim to have free will. What happens when you step outside of causality though? When you stop having your will dictated by the Idea of Evil and the God Hand? Skull Knight is argued to be like this, but he still operates within the bounds of causality, not so much outside of it. If Guts becomes someone who can shake off the chains of causality, I feel the ending will make him something of a Christ like figure. Being outside of the bounds of causality may allow him to actually confront the Idea of Evil, and to that extent The God Hand. But in doing so will have to sacrifice himself in some way. Maybe both he and Casca will fill that role. By having the brand of Sacrifice and surviving the ordeal they have taken the first step in freeing themselves from the will of Evil and the God Hand. It would be bitter sweet, in that not only would they sacrifice themselves to find peace in death, assuming they escape the bounds of causality, they will then potentially no longer be subject to the abyss after death, and actually find a heaven of sorts. And, in doing so potentially destroy the chains that it has over humanity, which is why I say "Christ like." Christ is said to have died to give humanity the chance to overcome original sin, rather than be shackled by it and forever deemed unworthy to find heaven. By doing this Christ opened the path to heaven, to paradise. And should this same line of thought be followed, by sacrificing themselves to destroy the Idea of Evil, or to at least create a pathway to where human beings can spiritually escape the bounds of causality and thus the abyss itself, it gives humanity the opportunity for each individual to exercise their own free will. It's just a thought. One I was thinking about during this video.

Im not sure if one should embrace suffering, as thats what the children do too- So being a struggler isn't the same as nietzsches ideas of embracing suffering as a good thing. Thats just stockholm syndrom. Jill has to activly change her circumstances, just as guts has. But fooling oneself into being in love with ones 'fate' or 'suffering' isn't the anwser hope that makes sense

Lost children to me is the beginning of the new berserk, it was definitely the end of black swordman, Guts wasn't this overly edgy asshole with a destroyed heart he was when he beat the count. in lost children Guts is now a defeated man with no hope ahead. As guts said... "there is no paradise to run to". Guts was already defeated, after realizing he's been the last days killing children over and over, he lost all hope at this point, This arc was Guts emotional rock bottom. From here on, Guts starts to rise back up.

Nah I recommend it if you can stomach the stuff in it. It isn't too complex as new things are introduced at a good pace. Just don't expect an ending because it's likely we won't get one now.

@@an0therW Berserk has a satisfying ending in every arc. Just because the main narration continues, doesn't mean you can't appreciate these encapsulated stories.

It's probably an unpopular opinion but I really think berserk kindof went downhill after lost children.. It definetly had its standout moments after that but, for the most part it's just Guts and company slaying big monsters(like seriously what was the point of the sea god arc?). There are a lot of new apostles like Grunbeld, or the arrow guy, but they don't have the kind of backstories and drama to them as Rosine and they also don't really have anything to do with the main motives of the story. It's still fun to read but, for the most part it feels like a bunch of pretty good filler arcs thrown together, with a bunch of new side characters I barely recognize. Only now with the latest chapters I feel like we are back on track, and actually going somewhere, and miura still wastes time with stupid comic relief whenever he can....
