little fun fact anno acutally wrote the original lyrics sent to wyzowski who translated them from japaneese to english but in translation it was bit more apperently shinji the song would have come from

It's actually Shinji's choice, as stated in the movies Rei asks Shinji what he truly wishes for and later changes his mind.
