Thank you, I appreciate that! Moving can be a chore- but also exciting. I definitely plan on using more of a modular approach once again. I don’t plan on moving again for a very long, but one never knows with life! -Mike
Hello! I am very excited for what’s to come! I’ve already had the measuring tape, pencil, and paper out starting the planning process. I appreciate you staying tuned as I keep everyone posted on the progress! -Mike
Hello, Scott! Thank you, I appreciate that. I’m looking forward to settling in and then getting right to work on the layout! I’ll keep everyone posted. -Mike
Thanks…I am thankful I went that route. It made it a lot easier to take apart. Getting everything back together could be a different story…we shall see! -Mike
I had to demolish two layouts, the second one had more salvage because of lessons learned. But the idea of doing all that precision work and then trashing it kept me out of the game (completely, I never "collected") for 40 years. Now in a module club (local standards, close to FreeMo, we have adapter units) and once a month, we run an EMPIRE. Which fits nicely in a corner until it's time to work on it, or run it.
@@MainTrackjust wondering: did you choose a house based on your layout size? 😊 As I have no basement nor garage space for a permanent layout I’m constantly tearing down and setting up.
Congratulations Mike it's time to move on and expand your layout to bigger and better can't wait to see the up coming progress in the future I know I won't be disappointed. Andy
Thank you, John. Yes, it was slightly painful. I have completed the process…it was the last thing to come down, even after everything else in the house was packed! I’m looking forward to what comes next! -Mike
Hi, George! Thank you…I am excited for the rebuild and expansion. Did you have good luck putting everything back together? Some guys are saying it’s quite a chore. In the past, I simply dismantled (destroyed) my previous smaller layouts and didn’t try to rebuild. -Mike
I appreciate that! I guess the key word should have been I “plan” to reuse the parts. We will see how well that works out in reality once I get to reconnect everything! -Mike
I appreciate that, Jonah! I’m excited to get to work- once I finish unpacking and arranging the house. Priorities I guess. Ha! The new space will be much more conducive to having visitors as opposed to the cramped garage! -Mike
Hi, Roger! Yes, I’m glad I can reuse some parts. Thankfully, I knew the house I was in wasn’t a long-term thing and had the ability to plan around that. I am planning on being in my new place for quite some time to come, but will still incorporate some of the construction techniques to make it semi-moveable down the line, should the need arise. -Mike
Congratulations on the new house and good luck on your move! I did that 3 years ago. While my railroad space was the same size, the configuration was different. I had to rebuild which wasn't so bad so bad in the end.
Hi, John! I’m glad to hear you had good luck rebuilding yours. As I mentioned, this will be a good opportunity for me to redo some little things I wasn’t 100% happy with. But, least I’m not having to start from scratch. The tear-down has been sad, but I knew the day would come. Thanks for staying tuned for what’s ahead! -Mike
Happy for you and your family Mike finding a new home , moving is always stressing , not to this time of year . Have a safe move , definitely pack your Model stuff better than you think , as things always shift in the truck or inevitably get dropped that I have learned... Great new space though for your new exciting adventures and a new life for the MKT . Cheers Mike , and we all hope to see you soon , back on the Main Track. Have a wonderful holiday an Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thank you! I hope you had a Christmas and New Years! I stayed busy with the move, but things are settling finally. All the trains made it safely! I only had a window pop out of the power plant- and that’s fixable. I’ve already been at work planning the layout. I hope to have an update for everyone soon! -Mike
Hi, Taylor! Thank you for staying tuned to watch the construction on layout version 2! I look forward to showing everyone the progress- starting very soon! -Mike
Nooo, the layout was beautiful, can't beleive its now leaving! Hope the new layout when you move to the new place comes out as beautiful as this one did! Edit: first comment, wow, that's a first, haha get it? Yeah I agree not funny..
Haha! Thank you, Bryan. I’ve already been hard at work planning everything. I’m expecting the new one to be just as good, hopefully better. I appreciate everyone staying tuned! -Mike
I hope your move goes flawlessly. I have moved three layouts, with a stunning lack of success. In all three cases, I spent more time correcting problems associated with the dismantling, moving and reassembly than I would have spent starting over. Did I learn my lesson? I did not! My current layout is designed and built to come apart into movable sections. I hope NEVER to put that to the test! Best of luck!
Thank you! The relocation process was a lot of work but we got it done! As you mention, saving and reusing the parts may be easier said than done. I think my most recently-built sections will be fine. I was wanting to rebuild my older parts anyways and I’ve learned additional lessons since constructing those. We shall see! Regardless, I’m hoping to stay put for quite some time. -Mike
Wow! What a shock. Well, as they say, onward and upward! Looking forward to next time and your adventures. BTW, it was good visiting with you recently.
Hi, Dan! Awesome seeing you and getting to chat. It was a fun afternoon out there. The new layout space will be a lot more accommodating for visitors when we get to that point! I’ll have enough space now to squeeze in Sedalia and Green Ridge to Clinton and perhaps La Due (got to get the lake bridge in there). But, I may have to chop out some of the towns in between. Decision, decisions! I’ll keep you updated! -Mike
Jeers and cheers. Hate to see the layout come down but happy fro you to be able to build something new and have the option of using parts of this layout. How big is the new basement?
Hello! Thank you…the move was a lot of work (as they all are) but well worth it. The new layout space will be about 30 x 50. Even with the laundry room carved out, I’ll still have plenty of space to work with. It won’t be the world’s largest layout, but it will be plenty to keep me busy for years to come. I’ve already been at the drawing board drafting a plan! I hope to have an update sometime soon. -Mike
Try using a fine tooth razor saw or Dremel to cut the track between modules. You will have to grip the rails tightly to prevent their being yanked out of the ties, but you should not need to redo the track. See "building a sectional layout" by Pelle K. Søeborg. If you don't own it, try your local library, that is where I got it along with most of my model railroading reference books. Great way to save money. I will never buy a book unless I need it 179 times a day or the library doesn't have it.
Hello! That’s a great tip! I will have to try that. It seems that would make it easier and cheaper, being able to save more of the track. I’ll hunt down Pelle’s book. I’ve enjoyed many of his articles over the years, but don’t have that particular book. I’m sure it’ll have some more good ideas for when I rebuild and expand! -Mike
hello Main Track Trains it's is Randy and i like yours video is cool thanks Main Track Trains Friends Randy & Merry Christmas & Happy New Year's & Best in New Year's 2024 Friends Randy
Yes, I’m planning for this to be my last move for a very long time! I’m hoping for the best when it comes to reusing the parts. If it doesn’t work, it’ll be a good excuse to start from scratch! -Mike
Hey there! Yes, it was a little sad to start the tear down process. But, the excitement of knowing what’s to come helped to motivate me. I appreciate you watching- and staying tuned for what’s in store! -Mike
Hello! You may be right! It’s very possible me planning to reuse parts is easier said than done. With my previous small layouts in the past, I always dismantled them completely and started again from scratch. We will see how this goes! Ha. -Mike
